Froom the website. I love how they say "a selection", like they cherry picked them!!

A selection of the finest tennis players in the world will be taking part in the second edition of the Andalucía Tennis Experience, a tournament organised by the Junta de Andalusia’s Council of Tourism, Commerce and Sport and that will be played between April 3 and 11 at the Club de Tenis Puente Romano in Marbella.

The latest name to announce her participation in the tournament is Belgium’s Kim Cljisters, who has recently rejoined the circuit after having a baby, and who has already shown that she has lost none of her form.

Since her comeback, and as well as reaching the quarter finals in Miami this week, she won the US Open last year, her second Grand Slam title, having already lifted the trophy in 2005, just one of the 36 WTA titles she has collected during her glittering career.

She is currently the world’s number 16, but climbed as high as first in 2003 and judging by her form since she returned to the courts, she will now be the lady to beat in Marbella, where her excellent form was enough to convince the organisers that Cljisters would make a more than ideal replacement for the injured Serena Williams.

Cljisters is joined in Marbella by another of the finest players in the world, Victoria Azarenka, one of the most promising performers in recent months.

The Belarusian reached the Dubai final in 2010 and also the quarter finals of the Australian Open. Now ranked seventh in the world, "Vika" needs to improve on clay if she is to achieve her logical target of breaking into the top 5. Marbella will provide her with an excellent opportunity to do just that.

They are joined by Flavia Pennetta, who will be looking to succeed Jelena Jankovic as champion at the Club Puente Romano. The world number 13, however, will be up against some tough Spanish girls, all of whom will enjoy particularly vociferous support form the home fans.

The three most promising ladies in the Spanish game will all be here: Murcia’s María José Martínez (27), the recent Hopman Cup winner, Valencia’s Anabel Medina (32), semi finalist in the first edition of this tournament, and Canary Islander Carla Suárez (36), who came so close last year, but ultimately succumbed to Jankovic in the final.

Marbella will also be welcoming France’s Aravane Rezai (21); Russia’s María Kirilenko (30); Romania’s Sorana Cirstea (40) semi finalist last year, and Alexandra Dulgheru (49); Argentina’s Gisela Dulko (37); Germany’s Andrea Petkovic (44); Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova (48); and Italy’s Sara Errani (43); all of whom are among the top 50 on the WTA tour.

The competition will be held at the Club de Tenis Puente Romano on for different courts, including the centre court with the capacity for 2,500 spectators. During the 9 days of play, there will be 32 players involved in the tournament proper, made up of 24 direct qualifiers, 4 qualifiers (from the preliminary rounds played on the first weekend of the event) and there are also 4 wildcard places left for the organisers’ to fill. The doubles competition also features 32 players (16 pairs) and there will be another 8 in the wheelchair tennis tournament. The total prize money on offer is $220,000 and the winner will also take away 280 points that will count towards her world ranking.

Hmmm... I really think this is a 1st-april joke. Clijsters always said that she picks her tournaments on a well-thought basis, and some last-minute confirmation is just not how Clijsters would act. At least, I guess so

if it is true then it is a smart move. this would be a great place for clijsters to test herself out on a clay court before the big tournaments where she still may be unseeded and have to play big guns early. she can use this as preperation for her upcoming clay season.

aslo if this is true, you can take from it clijsters is serious about clay and is willing to put the hours in to do well on it.
