It's so crazy how different their games are nowadays. For all the hate they (well, Venus) get for their technique today, it's just amazing how far they have come. They're both technically pretty good nowadays (Venus still has certain hitches but it's nowhere near as bad as certain posters like to make it out to be), and they have without a doubt become two of the most skilled and complete tennis players of this generation and others too - but back then they were simply pure, raw athletic talent. It's amazing.

They were both such little toothpicks back then as well, Venus is about a stone heavier and Serena about 3.

Venus's backhand is still as ugly as hell.

Even then, Serena, less experienced and younger of the two clearly shows she is better than her sister.

I just love how they have progressed so much in their respective careers. It is amazing because watching them play in 2010 I can see a difference from 2008.

It's easy to say this with hindsight, but from those highlights, you can tell that once Serena reined in her game, she would be the better player. "Straighter", more penetrating and accurate groundstrokes, compact swings, more aggressive point construction. Her errors and inexperience did her in in that match. She messed up easy shots, left herself open to the counterpunch occasionally.

In the video, all the creative energy was coming from Serena, especially in the third set. She was the one trying to make things happen, mixing it up, hitting hard, etc. Venus pretty much won by "pushing".

This was such a great match! Let's hope the Miami final this year is half as good.

Venus wasn't pushing, Venus was counterpunching. It's hardly like Venus plays like that on a regular basis, in fact that was the right thing to do as Venus was the better player at the time and i'm sure Serena wanted more of Venus' spotlight and was going to go out there and try to bully her around. It's not always right to be aggressive and Venus was right to let Serena throw the kitchen sink at her.

I wish we had more tennis like this. Since mid-2006 the WTA has been an utter cesspool in terms of match quality.

:hearts: When the courts were faster. Medium & slow hardcourts hurt Venus' game.

Serena's game isnt much different, except she has a MUCH better serve now... groundies/ volleys about the same..... except now she throws in that ugly backhand slice every now and then, which she needs to get rid of.....

Serena's backhand slice use to be a pretty looking shot around 2000-2004 but if your talking about the Ugly slice that help her beat justine in the AO she would be a fool to take any advice from you.

I don't know what all the nitpicking is about, when I compare that '99 final between a 17 and 18 years old with last weeks IW final the tennis is scintillating. hardly surprising they went on win 19 singles GS and counting between them

Man Venus was so solid and confident with her ground strokes back then...she only plays with this confidence at Wimbledon. I still say at their best Venus is a better player..than Serena..Serena just have more fight and drive..and thats what Venus is seriously lacking. It started in 03 and she never could get a hold of it...like she use to. I love both of these girls though...I will be so sad when they retire....

10 yrs later and Venus Williams forehand is still fugly.

Serena was so slim and SOO fast. The game just comes more naturally to her than her sister.

Maybe you prefer how it looks, but it has god SO MUCH better. Technically it's more secure and everything is more uniform compared to back in the day when every forehand would be hit in a completely different way from the last. Back then she could go days, weeks, even months without beng able to keep her forehand in court. Nowadays her backhand isn't as lethal DTL (although this year there have been some amazing backhands which suggest her famous backhand DTL is making a comeback), but she is much better at crosscourt backhands nowadays and is now able to hit some top-class angles off it from any part of the court.

I remember watching bits of this live. How on earth did Venus not take a set in that match? I dread to think how many SPs went...:help:

Wow..Serena sure adapted from her playing in '99 to what she plays nowadays. Better serve, better understanding of the key points. Nice to see in retrospect.

Are you joking ? That new sliced backhand earned her a few points in AO, including against Henin.
