No-one is to ever talk about this match again. Its in the past now, and Marion won, and thats the main thing. Maarion :worship:

Saving those 3 setpoints at *4-5 0-40 as pretty special though, especially the bh on the last one. Crowd on Marions side because they just wanted to see Roger. :haha: :haha: Wickmayer going 'EXCUUUUSE ME' to those people put her up in my estimation though.

An error-fest, but entertaining. At least they made those errors trying to do something offensive. They both desperately need a second serve, but that's why they're ranked where they are.

What a dud of a match. Wickmayer is really hard to watch when she isn't playing anything close to perfect tennis. Just random errors for no reason, off basic returns, when she isn't even going for anything, when she is required to move 1 foot forward....arrgghh. Then she has the audacity to scream at people in the crowd for talking...HOW ABOUT MAKE THE MATCH SOME WHAT INTERESTING!!!!!

*rant over*

Always good to see Marion in latter stages of tournaments :) Hopefully she can put in another good performance against Venus.

I love Yanina, but she was outplayed. Yanina missed at least 12 shots behind the baseline that should have been easily returned, but Wickmayer could not even reach the net on her return shots. Wickmayer had serious problems with the unorthodox style of Bartoli for most of the night. Wickmayer's 2nd serve were being crashed all night long.I am very disappointed, but Wickmayer needs to go back to the drawing board. She needs to play with more strategy and come in on the ball more. Far too often tonight, Bartoli dictated play.

That's why she is 3-0 H2H with Flavia?
Nina just needs more experience against this kind of players. She was close winning against Zvonareva & Kuzzie at the end of 2009 during the US hard court tour, played good match against Dementieva back then, pushed Henin to 3 sets in Melbourne and had opportunities again last night. So it seems to me like she's not a walk-over for top 20-players, but needs more experience!

No, just like she did at Wimbledon.

If Venus plays at a decent level, she'll beat Marion. She didn't play at a decent level in Stanford until it was too late. Of course Marion played well, but Venus' tennis is at a higher level.

Of course some players need Venus to self destruct so that they could score a win and Marion is not exception.. Not exactly confidence building. And that's pretty much the fact of the matter.

What happened in Stanford will cause Venus to be ready.

Venus will probably win, but I was just commenting on that because thats what everyone is expecting in Stanford and that user was being bitter about the loss last night. Im under no illusions that if Venus plays her game, she'll win. But if she doesnt, then Marion is confident enough not to self destruct like many others do when top players have an off day.

Well no not really Sharon. That still doesn't mean Marion doesn't have a chance. It's very easy to say Venus is better than Marion, and yes she is, but we all know she does not always beat players she is better than. It's not as simple as that.

Anyway, Marion outplayed Venus in that match, simple as. And I'm sure it gave her huge confidence (it was also her first big title).

I expected Yanina to win this one in 2 sets. This was a downer for sure. How in the h... does Bartoli beat someone like Yanina when she can't even get a first serve in ! Fortunately for Bartoli, she returns well, has speed on her return, and covers the court remarkedly well for her size. Mark my words on this - If Bartoli stuggles with her serve against Venus, it will not be pretty !!!

I'd take that Wimbledon final over a double bagel any day. Im sure Henin would do the exact same. No matter how many times Henin beats Marion in the next few years, it wont matter, because that match was the most important.

Fair enough

I was using that example to point out the obvious : that the Henin she beat that day won't let herself being beaten twice the same way she was beaten by the same player. And if they ever find themselves in a final I would be more inclined to think that Henin will come with the same vengefull spirit and Marion may very well be the one who will be severly beaten than the other way around.

That was my point : that inflincting correction goes both ways. It just happened that those two met at a time that wasn't a final when it was time for paybac mode but the spirit is the same. Henin wanted to destroy her wether it was a final or not and i would be more inclined that the same spirit will prevail each time she meets her. Nothing more, nothing else.

In a single sentence: some good hitting from both, some lousy serving from both, some choking from both.

I didn't think this was as bad as most people here are claiming, but then again I only saw ES's RX, which edited out a few games in both sets (maybe those were the worst?). Or maybe this was just a match between two players the majority of TF actively dislikes, and which aren't likely to get much praise regardless of how they play?

Low 1st serve % from Wickmayer put her at the mercy of Bartoli, who ate nearly all of Wickmayer's 2nd serves for breakfast (and this after I repeatedly claimed that Wickmayer has one of the very best 2nd serves in the game :o ). Wickmayer was somewhat more spectacular off the ground (some sick angles), Bartoli somewhat steadier. Wickmayer, as always, hit nearly everything quite hard but was somewhat conservative in terms of placement, and that helped Bartoli keep herself in rallies which Wickmayer was dictating. Bartoli was scrambling quite well, but I really wouldn't have bet on her surviving a 3rd set against such a fit, pugnatious opponent as Wickmayer.

[still bored, still feeling like bumping old match threads up]
