View Full Version : Will Belgians make History in next 48 hours?

Belgians (thanks to Henin, Clijsters and Wickmayer) have chance in Miami/2010 to become just 4th nation since World War II in history of Womans Tennis (after USA, Australia and Russia) to have at least 3 semifinalists at some two-week tennis event! No need to explain why two-weekers (4 slams: AO, RG, Wim, USO +in last about 20 years: IW & Mia) where (mandatory) playing almost all womans TOP100 is so special events.

GIRLS TO WATCH IN NEXT 48 hours (Miami 2010 QF's):
Yanina Wickmayer (BEL) vs M.Bartoli (Today)
Justine Henin (BEL) vs C.Wozniacki (Tomorrow)
Kim Clijsters (BEL) vs S.Stosur (Tomorrow)

What? Serena/Venus/Lindsay/Jennifer/Monica haven't had an instance where three of them weren't SFists?

Australia,when?

Australia, when? Before late 70's Australia is super force of Womans Tennis (Margaret Court, Evonne Goolagong...etc). Last time SF3+ at major happen in 1978 at Australian Open of course (which is before 80's some kind of "local event") and last time at non-Melbourne big event it happen at Wimbledon 1971.

This is very likely to happen..u got to think that Kim and Justine are sadly guranteed the win and Yanina has to be the favourite going in to her match too

China (their womans tennis players) actually reach this SF3+ achievement, but due to this thread restrictions (to not count big events before WWII and to not count big TABLE tennis events) I'm decide to "suspend" their success.

WTA Belgians currently remind me to ATP Sweden from late 80's, which have also two big stars (Wilander and Edberg) with couple others guys able to reach TOP10 or GS QF/SF (even final once)... but it's never happen 3-ATP-SWE into big-SF in same time. BTW in ATP competition after WWII there is also USA and Australia with this SF3+ achievement, and thanks to RG/clay experts ATP-Spain and even ATP-Argentina also join to this exclusive club.

What? Serena/Venus/Lindsay/Jennifer/Monica haven't had an instance where three of them weren't SFists?

What's the question?

Here is some of when 3 of them made SFs
1999 USO - Venus, Serena, Davenport.
2000 W - Serena, Venus, Davenport
2001 AO - Venus, Davenport, Capriati
2001 W - Venus, Davenport, Capriati
2001 USO - Venus, Serena, Capriati, Davenport.
2002 RG - Venus, Serena, Capriati.

Wickmayer is actually only Belgians player which will face in Miami QF lower ranked player, but I basically agree with all posters which says that her match vs Bartoli will be probably crucial for this achievement - so it seems that we already in next 2-3 hours (when Wickmayer match will be over) will know answer about this question!

And this is not first time that Bartoli is killer of Belgiums biggest hopes :tape:
Remember Wimbledon 2007 when she shocked Henin in SF and destroyed her chances to become 3rd player (with Serena and Federer) in XXI century which won all 4 slams.

Lindsay lost to Serena in the QFs that year, it was Hingis who played Serena in the semis. ;)
