Anticipated match up. Tennis is getting exciting again, hopefully its a good match.

Caroline will know she needs to go for it, so I expect her to change things up a little bit and make Justune work for it.

Justine should win though, 2 tight sets.

I know, exactly

Seriously, I'm not a huge fan of Caro's game, but you would at least think people could respect the fact that she's overmatched in half of her matches yet finds a way to win. People complain about this mentally weak era of women's tennis and then you finally get a mentally tough player, and she gets criticized for doing better than people think she should be doing. Kind of strange.

It's always a little hard to predict before a first match how two players suit each other, but I agree Henin is the favorite. She was the best player in the world before her retirement and she'll probably be #1 again once she really finds her stride. She hit a bump against Dulko last tournament, though, meaning she's not invulnerable yet.
Caro's still in her learning stage where she's improving her game month by month. I think she's still a year or two away from reaching the top of her game. If Henin plays her best she'll win, but if she's less than stellar Caro has a chance. At least I'm glad they won't be playing until Wednesday. The extra day of rest should make Caro as fit for the match as she can be after going deep in two back-to-back tournaments. Looking on the bright side; if Caro loses she has a few extra days to recover before PVB.

Justine.

My intuition is that Caro will be a good matchup for her. I mean, she's 9-0 against JJ who at the time was playing near her best, and JJ is like an advanced version of Caro.

She'll take the ball early, construct rallies and use her unmatched ability to create angles to beat the crap out of her. Caro's top spin fh cannot hurt Justine.

I'm a little bit worried about Caroline's abbility to hit very deep, and Justine has a problem with players hitting the ball deep consistently, especially to her backhand. If Caroline can take advantage of the short balls Justine will hit from her backhand, she can win.

This.

Remember her match against Czink :tape: against Karatantcheva who is a pusher but 1000x less good at pushing than Caro.

I am worried, I am afraid that Justine goes nuts because of Caro's pushing :tape: If it happens, I'd say Caro in three. If Justine is patient (just like when she is playing JJ) and keeps playing so well, she should win in two easy sets.

I know everyone wants Henin to get rid of the pusher and so do I but I genuinely think Caro's "heavy" moonballs directed to Justine's backhand could bother the Belgian to death. Whether or not Wozniacki is able to implement such tactics remains to be seen.

Pu-lease...

Lets weigh this up:

Woza has no serve, no forehand, no transition game and couldnt make a volley to save her life.

JuJu has a good serve, good forehand, superb at the net, killer back hand and is as tough as nails.

How the fuck is Woza going to win this?

Mere fact.

Caro had to retire from double and was adviced by doctor to retire from single also. Only reason she's still in, is because of sheer willpower. But she'll need more than that against Henin, the greatest player after Serena.

Kman, you've made some rather WUMMISH comments on other threads too. As a fellow Caro supporter, I would personally appreciate it, if you cut down on those (WUM comments). Leave the WUM and spamming of TF with ridiculous comments to the Caro haterz.

As for sick (ill, you probably mean), Caro was obviously not well at the time for the doubles match, why it was cancelled. Unless you are a blind Caro hater (and there is a fair few of those on TF), you'd also appreciate Caro wasn't exactly well for the MaKiri match. Even the medical doctors advice her to stop playing. But Caro is Caro and found a way through. :worship:

When you get a flu/viral infection it can make you un-well for a few days to up to several weeks. Further, I'll also wait to hear from Caro or her father in regards to how she's feeling now. Rather than taking your claim at face value. The result Vs Pavly would suggest Caro is feeling better.

Exactly. You'd normally use the word 'ill' (as in illness), when talking about your health. 'Sick' is mainly used in connection with mental deficits, as in: You are sick in your head' (I am not calling you that, just explaining). Anyway, we are not having English lessons.

sick = afflicted with ill health

"I called in sick"

"call in sick, to notify one's place of employment by telephone that one will be absent from work because of being ill."

kman, let me try another approach then. This is not about American English or British English. This is about what a sentence means. Ok.

'Caroline is sick' means Caroline is crazy/mentally unstable/loony.

'Caroline is ill' means Caroline is not feeling well.

I just showed you that sick can mean "afflicted with ill health". In fact, it's the very first definition given by dictionary.com and obviously the definition I used.

I look forward to watching this. I still think Justine has a very good chance of being player of the year for 2010. Henin's slice should deal with that fine though. Anyway, she just needs to sneak in on the moonballs in the way that Kirilenko was doing. Thinking about it, both women have almost identical shot selection at the net (although IMO Kirilenko's volleys are WAY more attractive and effortless) so I think that the key to this match will be the way Justine approaches those moonballs as no doubt Wozniacki will be trying to hit the ball over Justine's head.

Caroline is sick, so Henin takes this without a doubt...

Granted, I'm not sure Wozniacki is able to replicate, say, Mauresmo's flawless tactics from the Oz-2006 final but if Caro is smart enough she should at least try to do it. The rest, indeed, depends on Justine's play.

I haven't seen Henn play in this tournament. if she plays the way she has so far, Wozniacki will win. Henin is trying to master hitting outright winners from relatively low precentage positions. Wozniacki will make sure she sees a lot of low precentage positions. Henin will average 12+ UEs per set.

If Henin decides to be patient, it's 6-2, 6-2 Henin. But I don;t think she'll do that.

I know everyone wants Henin to get rid of the pusher and so do I but I genuinely think Caro's "heavy" moonballs directed to Justine's backhand could bother the Belgian to death. Whether or not Wozniacki is able to implement such tactics remains to be seen.

I previously thought Justine would struggle a little against Wozniacki, because all the paceless topspinny shots could sap the energy out of her in long rallies. (Think Wallmentieva IW 06)

But then I saw Justine play yesterday. Quite frankly, she's unplayable for Wozniacki in that form. Almost every point is ended on Justine's terms. Even though she averaged 12+ UEs per set against Zvonereva, she won in easy straights, facing no break points. Her serve yielded weak replies, which she promptly put away. She went for winners and forced many errors, put pressure on Vera to go for too much depth. I see Justine attacking Caro's forehand particularly, drawing short balls. And if Caro does one of her last ditch soft retrievals, Justine will be at the net.

@FinestHour : Henin improved her serve, she serves a lot more towards the body, and she puts some topsin in serve :bounce: Finally she did it ! Then, she hit much less double faults and is much more effective at the serve.

All that Justine needs is patience. And even, if she is not patient, she can still win this.

:spit: @ people taking her loss to Dulko as a telling factor : Henin hit many unforced errors and Dulko was playing well, she has already defeated big names. Bad defeats happen, especially when it is only your third tournament back after 18months of retirement. But she is a champion. She knows how to rebounce back after a bad loss.

Most of the times she's played anyone ranked #1 is whilst being relatively fresh on the tour. Active current and former #1's during Caro's playing career as a senior have been Venus and Serena Williams , Safina , Jankovic , Ivanovic , Davenport, Hingis , Clijsters, Mauresmo and Sharapova.

5/10 of those players last played her before mid 2008 , when she first started making an impact on the tour. As for the rest , she won against Mauresmo, and well losing to Safina in a Tier I final on clay in 2009 is nothing to complain about ,her match with Clijsters was close and let's not forget Kim had just beaten both WS in a Grand slam , all respect to Caro but you don't beat both WS in a GS then lose to Wozniacki in the final. That's just how things are at the moment.

Otherwise she had match points against Serena , and well I do suppose she should have beaten Jankovic on at least one of those 4 occasions but hey , everyone struggles against someone else on tour. So her record against #1's isn't a huge deal.

There are a lot of different things that can happen here. Justine can hit through Caroline and steamroll her, which I think is likely given that it will be a night match and Justine typically times the ball well at night. But Caroline's very deep, very heavy topspin balls could frustrate Justine - not into unforced errors, per se, but forced errors. Forced in that the topspin could wreck the timing on her shots, especially her backhand. It will be interesting to see if Henin loses rhythm or focus playing against another roadrunner and someone who can just push, push, push, push all day long.

Although I hate Henin as a person, I want to see her rip Wozniacki apart and reveal how weak she is as a world #2. Oh, WTA.

Just wanted to add: the key for Henin is to be aggressive early in rallies and move forward to close off the net. She did that very well against Zvonareva and hit some exceptional volleys. That tactic will be more crucial against Wozniacki because of her consistency from the back.

1. Henin can 'push' much more effectively than Caro
2. Henin can play the entire court. Those weaksause gets will be taken in the air. As aggressive as Henin is playing these days, she is not going to be letting Caro run and push balls back. If she was coming to net on Serena's 2nd serve, she will not stay at the back and let Caro push her way to a win.
If anything it is the errors she makes as a result of trying to be aggressive that will be her undoing, not her losing rhythm due to Caro's pushing

I agree with this. It will come down to Justine's errors. And, Justine is not a better 'pusher' than Caro and I don't mean that as an insult. Justine usually takes charge while Caro is more of a grinder. Not even a counterpuncher but a grinder. And, Caro's serve is surprisngly good. I would even go as far to say it's a weapon. And, hitting errors trying to be aggressive IS losing rhythm due to Caro's pushing.

Actually, back then when Caro and Ree played, Wozniacki seemed to be more aggressive. Moreover, early in her career I remember her saying that she wanted to break the record for the fastest serve.

Caroline has deep heavy top spin shots?

Slightly exaggerated but not completely wrong. She hits a decently heavy ball with good depth, not great depth. It's why people have trouble hitting through her even though she isn't fast enough. She literally overpowered Radwanska last week. Yeah, not exactly a huge achievement, but if I had to make an argument on why she's a top 10 player, it's her consistency mixed with her decent depth and weight of shot.

Justine cannot push better than Caro. If she's pushing then the match will be done. Justine is a bad pusher (Bartoli Wimbledon anyone?). Her balls become fluff and land in the middle of the court, and she'd be the first one to make an error.

I don't think she needs to go out of her way and implement a very aggressive game, but obviously if she's capable of doing that, then it's going to be even faster. Her B-/C+ game is good enough. Justine can construct rallies with angles, shot selection and all court game better than pretty much anyone, and that's a probably more effective/less risky way to beat Caro than to hit through her (Shitlana USO QF for example). If Jelena can construct such a game and straight-set Woz and drive her to complete desperation then I'm sure Justine's good enough. This is Claytine after all.

I hate Justine, but this is one of those time where I hope she rips Woz to pieces

No mercy justine, No mercy.

This is the one and only time in my life where I will say
I hope Henin wins

Kill her juju

I'm pretty sure Juju won't hold with the nonsense that is Caro's game

I love how everyone's "changing sides" for this match.

Anyway it will be fun to see Peak and fully healthy Wozniacki go up against Justine, even if Justine has played more matches and might be more tired. But, it should be a good match.

I want Justine to win. If Marion puts all the effort into beating Venus, I at least want her to have a chance in the final. :o
