First, you're overreacting. It's not that serious.

Second, her retrieving skills today were great.

Third, I didn't say that she displayed all her talents in this match.. but Kim has an allcourt game. She doesnt utilize all of her talents but she's also great at net, and can vary spins and angles whenever she needs to.

was great to watch kim play well after the 1st few games. the thing kim has over every top player is she can get such width off both forehand and backhand. she just pulled vika out of court on either side then had the open space or the wrong footer to hit away the winner with vika stranded.

she is also very clever, it was windy so she threw up balls on the run, and let the wind take hold of them and vika would swing widly at them even though they were moving in the air.

great to see movement, angle and power all harnessed together.

If that was playing well for her she wouldn't be top10. :o Seriously, this was some bad bad tennis. Couldn't serve, Couldn't finish points, Couldn't finish volleys/smashes.

I'll blame it on the wind for now...

Kim Clijsters does what she does best, solid as a rock. Besides this i'd say she's the best 'high-wind' player around. She adjusts so well to the situation at hand. Will this defensive play lead her to the title though, not convinced yet...

She hit a lot of shots that would be winners against most players on tour.. and a lot of smashes she was forced to hit over and over again.

We have to realize who she was playing against and given the conditions and her opponent, Vika played well in the 1st. Frustration got to her by the second though.

So? Can't we expect a top 10 player to know how to smash a couple of times? If Azarenka can't hit smashes over and over again, she should train on it, because it's an essential part of the game. I can give her credit for wanting to take the initiative, but if you can't finish off points, then there's no point in taking the initiative.

Frustration always gets to her, she's a mental midget who loses her focus way too easily.

I agree, clijsters brought A LOT back. A few points were impressive, but there were more then enough points where azarenka really let herself down. She was hitting some smashes right at her or ones that landed halfcourt. :o Clijsters was 3 feet behind the baseline in the majority of rallies and azarenka couldn't do anything with it because of her poor fore-court game.

True, but I believe Vika had to force the issue, b/c when Kim got into a groove, there was just no beating her from the baseline.

There were also some impressive returns for Azarenka and some very impressive rallies. All that being said, it only lasted for most of the first set and then Kim just cruised.

I think Kim is just a very bad matchup for Azarenka like Venus is for Azarenka as well.

I honestly don't think it's a match-up problem with these 2. I still think Azarenka has what it takes to make it competitive in this rivalry. Their close match last year contributing to me assessing this. When azarenka is on her game she can dictate play and kim will likely be in 'full-defense' mode. She has the strokes to push kim back. When that happens she can blast her away off the ground resembling a sharapova. (this time finishing the drive volleys and smashes)

She's missing 1 crucial thing for this right now though, a serve. Without a better serve you're obviously right, clijsters will win 9 out of 10 matches if azarenka doesn't improve in this area.

Agree totally, for people saying Azarenka needs to learn how to volley and smash have obviously not seen any of her other matches so far this season because she's been doing both really well. As i said before, tonight it was just the wrong tactic to use with the blustery wind and she was mis-timing every one of her shots when she came in. The serve is a major problem though and without a big improvement there I worry if she'l be able make the next level any time soon.

Maybe.. but you can't FORCE Kim to be in full-defense mode. That's just a bad habit she has. If Kim can handle all the firepower of a Venus and Serena, than she should have little problem handling the offense of Azarenka.

Kim is the one that should be dictating play, as she did tonight.. she can hit harder, with more accuracy, etc.
There's really not one aspect of the game in which Vika is superior.

In both matches Vika played Kim she was a pure headcase. I'ld love to see Vika play the Belgian in an OZ and/or Duabaï form where she was a lot more clutch and willing to play/win or whatever she wanted to do than in that low quality performance.

She hits behind Vee and Ree all the time, though to be fair I've never seen her play them in those kinds of weather conditions or with that type of crowd. So I found her play disappointing when I've seen her be very strategic. Poor tactics today.

Maybe.. but you can't FORCE Kim to be in full-defense mode. That's just a bad habit she has. If Kim can handle all the firepower of a Venus and Serena, than she should have little problem handling the offense of Azarenka.

Kim is the one that should be dictating play, as she did tonight.. she can hit harder, with more accuracy, etc.
There's really not one aspect of the game in which Vika is superior.

have you seen the h-2-h between those players  i'd say she doesn't handle firepower well

I expected a tougher match, but like many of the matches in the fourth round the wind proved to be a big factor. Clijsters handled it better than Azarenka.

Only seven games dropped in three matches so far!

Sean.
Mar 30th, 2010, 08:43 AM
 Clijsters is not JUST a ball masher. She's a complete talent and the defense she played today was unmatched.

Yes, she's got great defence I'm not denying that. But that doesn't stop her being a ball basher, there's not really any thought in her game. Yesterday she wasn't building the point, going for the lines or anything, just hitting hard into space.

With these kind of windy conditions, it's really hard to play good shots. And if you're playing Kim, who gets everything back, it's even harder. That was the problem today for Vika. Windy conditions + Kim as your opponent is just unbeatable I think. Vika needed to play her best tennis to win, but wasn't able too. Very impressive second set from Kim, I believe this tournament is hers if she keeps playing like this. Vika, get ready for the clay now. your ranking needs a little boost. :tears:

WD Kim - I didn't like those dfs at the beginning but after that :hearts:

Vika just imploded. Furious all the time and remonstrating and smashing her racket and then rushing to the net and smashing out wildly. Not surprisng the way she was acting. There's only ever been one player who did well acting like that - and that was JMac. Vika's mental attitude was just terrible. Could you ever imagine Kim being like that. If Vika wants to get better - she really needs to control herself.

Azarenka -> FAIL !!!!!! :haha:

Totally.

But it will probably still take a few further beatdowns such as this one before people stop blaming Shriekarenka's EPIC FAILS at her attitude/bitchyness/whatever rather than at the inherent limitations of her generic, aggressively unexceptional game.

Terrible conditions, with both players struggling to adjust early on (wind blowing the ball all over the place after the toss = DFs galore).

Shriekarenka has an amazing ROS (she puts back into play nearly every serve, no matter how big, both deep and with decent and sometimes even good pace) and not much else. Doesn't win any points at all off her serve, groundstrokes are very accurate but standard issue in terms of raw pace, her ability to keep up with elite opponents in high intensity rallies comes and goes (first set of this match - intermittently on; second set - completely off) due to her wide swings and shaky FH. She actually had the correct game plan for this match - to stand as close to the baseline and take the ball as early as possible so as not to give Clijsters time to angle her off the court - but couldn't implement it with consistent success; some remarkable groundstrokes hit almost as half-volleys, but a ton of framed FHs more than cancelled any possible gains from such tactics.

And as many others have already remarked, Shriekarenka's drive volleys on this match should be compiled in Youtube and set to a laugh track.

Kimberly was ghastly early on and solid in the 2nd set. She didn't need to be more than that, but still managed to give Shriekarenka's rally shots the pasting they deserved on occasion.
