:woohoo: :bounce:

First set was a disaster for Vee, but Dani played pretty well. Second and third were very close, with some fantastic exchanges. The final few games were super-tense! The crowd really got into it. Nice for a WTA match!!!

All in all, a pretty good match. I enjoyed watching it! (oh and that reminds me, thankyou Oprah for making it rain in Miami so the TV schedule changed!! As a member of the church of Griffin, I feel I should always remember to thank Oprah almighty . Hallelujah, praise Gayle, Amen!)

And of course congrats to Dani for winning another set against Vee! She is now 2-20 :yeah:

Ugh. She will never ever beat Venus. That will be the closest she will ever come. But has had a good week, it's Miami, and she was almost into the QF's.

WOW. I was in two minds who to cheer for all the time. But I guess it's to painful to see Vee losing, and she is so lovely winning! And I'd rather watch Aga-Venus than Aga-Dani. But Daniela :sobbing: Similar performance to Kiri's yesterday all the way.
Now Vee, here's a thing - lose to Aga here, and then win RG :hearts: You may beat her there if you feel like.

As long as Venus was on two legs, she could have been down 0-6 0-5 and still win.

Give me one reason why Hantuchova with three challenges left, doesnīt challenge the close call at 4-4 Adv Venus. Just one. Kirilenko had a similar point against Wozniacki. Iīm not even a fan of these players and it pisses me off. I couldnīt be a fan of such a player. Who wants to be a fan of a player, who doesnīt care about winning? The linesman wasnīt sure, Venus wasnīt sure, but Hantuchova just takes it. It was the most crucial point of the fuckin match.

Well, good fight, always nice to see Venus winning a close match!
Donīt want to talk about too much about the usual Upīs and downīs in her game, between world class tennis and amateur, but one thing I really have to mention!
It really annoys me that Venus often has such big problems to win her service games, just when she finally got a break or when she serves for the match, she often needs 2 chances then, like in 2nd set, as she really served terrible at *54, same in the 3rd set at *32, well, she was able to serve it out to love at *54 at least, but that is some weak point in her game in general, where she definetly was stronger a few years ago, when she played "at her peak"!

In the end, the win counts, she just has to beat Radwanska now, as long as her leg injury isnt too serious, good luck! :)

The way Venus was playing in this match doesn't bode well for her for the rest of the tournament.

At the start, she was hitting her returns short into the middle of the court, and she was basically letting Daniella dictate.

Venus' movement was dodgy at that start but progressively got better.

Daniella over all played well, took MOST of her opportunities.

Venus was just streaky. On occassion she'd look as if she was about to go on a roll, hit two beautiful winners and then follow them up with a couple of errors. Majority of the match her groundstrokes were shaky.

Daniela played some superb points. Those three points to go up 2-1* were the best she played in years. Without Venus's serve, she could've beat a lot of top 10 players today.

But Venus was just too strong in the year, she hit some boombs on her serve and one of her backhand was faster than Karlovic's serve.

Perfect "10" for Venus...:o

Okay - maybe I'm exaggerating about the 'perfect' part. :help:
I'm so glad that she dug her heels, stopped being cranky and petulant and fought in the 2nd set, because for a while there this match was starting to look rather Clijsters-Petrova-esque... :tape: And I was starting to wonder if she was *ever* going to figure out to hit to Dani's bh instead of TO her fh...:banghead:

But she did. :)

There were some stunning points from Venus in between the hot-mess play with a few instances of Wimbledon-esque movement and purpose... and some of those bhs. That said, I also agree with Kishan that the consistency wasn't there (unlike some of the other players who are progressing) so if she gets any further, it will be gravy. I hope that this match has done her game some good. For now though, I'm going to make like Vee, 'be in the moment' and enjoy a hard-fought, hard-earned victory.

I am SO proud of Daniela. :)
She finaly won another out of Venus and make it really close.
She improves and uses a lot more the crosscourt shot, not only using the down on the line one! :)
She's finding form again and I think she will be Top 15 if she continues like this.
I am a bit dissapointed for the netcord in the third set at 4-4 Adv. Venus on Daniela's serve. I think she would have won the point. (Vee would have won the match anyway as her serve was HUGE)

Nice match for both and really entertaining one! :D

Yeah that exact point. It was worth a challenge. There is no way, you donīt challenge that ball. Eurosport didnīt show any conclusive angle, but even if they did it was close enough to the line, that as a player you have to challenge it. If you are broken your chances of winning the match are like 10%. So all she needed was like a 10% chance that the ball was in to challenge it.

...And WD to Dani, who came with a game-plan and who has always had an elegant game that I like. I deliberately avoided the "who will win this match" thread because I think too many people took it for granted that Vee would steam-roll Dani in two.

And Dani foiled their predictions there...

well done to venus on turning this around while serving like shit and having no forehand. She turned things on in the nick of time and worked her way through it.

Hantuchova played the tactically perfect match for a set and a half, then venus turned on the serve a little and she was gone. She made some bad choices at deciding moments late in the second set as well as the third. This was a real chance to win here..., venus possibly couldn't play any worse then this.

Anyway, decent match to watch overall. Bit disappointed with the outcome. ;)

One bad match doesn't foreshadow the outcome of a tournament.

Well Venus was sitting around all morning into the afternoon due to a rain delay and she came out flat. Its not about how pretty of tennis you play but getting the win.Venus stepped it up when it was needed.Cahill said to daniela u know Venus is going to start playing aggressive now and she is good and that so are you ready for it.I had to laugh cuz it was so funny.I didnt think Daniela was going to win because when she gets a lead she starts thinking of the finish line to fast and it messes up her concentration.ONe point at a time. One match at a time.Good going Venus and on to the Radwanska chick lol.but either way good to see your fighting spirit kicking in and your mother and serena loudly clapping.yes give Venus her confidence stick and let her roll with it.

Venus was like a roller coaster ride in that match. It seemed that she was only willing to step it up when she really needed to. It almost seemed that she had it on cruise control and then did something special when a bump was in the road or there was a sharp turn up ahead. Hantuchova on the other had played consistently the same throughout the match. She gave it her all. But when Venus stepped it up it was not much that she could do.

This is the type of match that she could win against Venus if Venus did not have the ability to go to another gear out of Hantuchova's reach. Hantuchova knew that this was her chance from how streaky Venus was playing and that is why she did not mentally go away. It is very hard to beat someone you have never beaten before, especially when you know yourself that they really are that much better than you. But Hantuchova played as if she did not know their history. At the same time it is also hard to lose to someone that you know for a fact that you can beat and therefore that keeps you going even on a bad day.

All in all I knew Venus would win but it was a matter of when. I was glad to see that Venus's serve stayed strong when she needed it. That is a very good sign for the rest of the tournament.

Congratulations to Daniela for the improvement in her mental and physical games. I get the feeling that she may cause some damage this year. I was proud of the way she fought and played hard today. Against another opponent, she would have won. Darren Cahill is a great coach.

well done to venus on turning this around while serving like shit and having no forehand.

Bit disappointed with the outcome. ;)

There was no chance and oooo yes she could have.

Shades of Hantuchova circa 2002/07 in this match. So refreshing to see her play assertive and authoriative tennis, after some dire displays of indifferent ball-striking this year. When Hantuchova plays well, there's almost a seamless rythm that she can find herself in, with a beautiful mixture of pace and angles.

There was the feeling that she wasn't going to sustain such a level, and it was justified. As soon as Venus began to make inroads into the Hantuchova serve, it became a much keener affair, with Venus's first serve% hitting GOAT-heights in the second set. The baseline rallies started to turn in Venus's favour, who began to deflect Hantuchova's seering drives much more effectively, hitting with better depth and exposing Hantuchova deep in the forehand corner, to open up the court for the appropiate winner. Venus wasn't out to hit Daniela off the court of course, but get her out of position. Given the conditions and the form of Daniela, it was a great testament to Venus's utter belief in her shot-making, no matter how ungainly the means. There was one backhand deep in the final set that screamed peakVenus:drool:

Really good contest really, all things considered.

I thought Cahill did a good job of motivating Daniela. He was telling her all the right things - solid strategy, great demeanor. Daniela just didn't execute all of it very well. As Cahill texted Gimelstob - it is hard to make a player believe they can win when she has never beaten her opponent in 9 attempts.

As much as I love Venus and wanted her to win, I was happy to see the improvement in Daniela because she always appears to be so emotioannly and physically fragile. She used to be a solid top 15 contender. I would love to see her confidence and performance improve.

Even though she lost I think this was my favorite Daniela match of 2010. Seriously the way she was fighting and giving herself a chance. She had some bad ue's but that is expected in her game, she never turned into an ue machine. Some of her shots were so  She really made Venus play a level higher than she was expecting to. Daniela was so distraught when they showed Cahill talking to her after going down a break in the 3rd that you just knew she believed she could win today. If she keeps this up (and thats a big if) she will return to the top 15 fairly soon. I just wish clay season wasnt begininng. :(

Love Vee's fighting spirit this year

I loved when Lindsay commented on Vee's fighting spirit, saying she's not as vocal about it as Serena, but it's still there and going strong. She was shaky in the early goings, but one had to assume that Dani was going to get nervous and Vee was going to tighten up her game. Her movement was somewhat sluggish, maybe that had something to do with the taping :scared: But I'm glad she was tested when not playing her best and still managed to come through. Let's go Vee!!

Good effort Dani

Venus shouldn't have too much trouble with Aga if she is somewhat on her game.

A coach can only provide the game plan. It's up to the player to execute.

And once again it was so nice to hear Lindsay talking about Vee's game. I'd bet she knows it better than anyone not named Serena or Richard, etc. and there's so much respect there. Really Lindsay seems to treat all the players with respect even when she doesn't particularly care for their game style (like with Caro yesterday). It's nice change.

For the life of me, I don't see how the WS do it. They come back from the grave!!!

I was looking at the match, Venus got skunked in the first set, and was behind in the second set. I couldn't stand it no longer, I TURNED OFF THE TV SET!!! Now, I have done this turn-off-tv drill several times with Serena and Venus when they are on the verge of losing, and it seems that each and everytime I do it, they do the UNTHINKABLE. They WILL themselves to win.;)

Utterly fantastic. I mean, you could have throwed in the towel on Venus that is how bad it looked for here and how far back she was.

I'm so happy for Daniela, I know she lost but this is the least disappointing loss of hers in a long time, I know Venus didn't play her best but did anyone expect Daniela to take advantage of that, absolutely not. Usually when her opponent plays bad Daniela plays 10X worse. I don't want to be too optimistic but I'm so excited for her and the form she seems to be in lately, the last time she took a set off Venus was back in her best days in 2002. And her new coach is so positive and just what Daniela has needed, a coach who has patience with the choking and the disappointing tennis she sometimes produces.

The most impressive thing about Hanty in this match was how she handle Vee's 120mph 1st serve BOMBS, sometimes. Equally impressive was the fact that Vee was ready for them to come back. A lot of times, when I get off a big serve, I tend to stand and admire my handiwork only for it to come blistering back at my feet and look like a fool.

This match was a real window into the damaged psyche of Daniela Hantuchova. After getting broken in the third, sitting with DC with her head in her towel as if she had just lost was revealing. She is a mental wafer - ready to crumble any moment. She needs a real sit down with a LEGITIMATE sports psychologist and work through some of this stuff.
