are being treated much more fairly (schedule wise) than they were at Indian Wells. And Fox is treating them way better than tennis channel. Is this the Venus Serena factor or just my imagination?

Well, it isn't a Serena factor. And anyway, it's far too soon to tell.

However, TTC vs Fox may be something. The Tennis Channel's programming is probably still run by tennis people. FoxNews' programming is almost undoubtedly run by the entertainment division. The entertainment value of winsome young lasses sweating would not be lost on them.

True but I didn't really mean literally. This is the US market. They are still in America just assumed to be the best (esp. amongst casual fans)...so is it easier to put them and women in general on center court because they pull in more women's fans...or was it just a sexist thing at Indian Wells.

Why not? They probably thought she (and Venus) would play and made their schedule ahead of her withdrawal.

At Indian Wells we were lucky to see 1 or 2 womens matches scheduled for center...if I'm remembering correctly...so far here it's been equal. If they schedule equally the tv coverage is likely to be equal as they primarily televise center court matches. So either they are jerks at IW or the very fact that they play Miami creates a greater desire to see womens matches...

They can move their equipment to the match they want. And even if Serena hadn't pulled out, there's no way to know if they'd be on opposite sides of the draw.

Venus is a star. They were obviously going to show her. But think of how many first weeks of tournament where the only women you ever saw play were Venus, Serena and Maria Sharapova. When they're showing Kleybanova vs Kuznetsova in the third round, then I'll start giving credit for fairness.

Have they shown any big chunks of womens matches besides Venus/Vinci?

Fish/Murray is wrapping up. Let's see if they show the #1 woman's seed, or some men's match on Court 57.

not really....If Venus is playing they will put her on tv.....Same with Serena and Sharapova(If Sharapova can stay in a tournament long enough that is)

For what it is worth... I was at IW and happened to talk to some TC people... Apparently they got the coverage there this year b/c Fox's was SO BAD and random last year which frustrated the tournament!
TC had the exact same feeds as Fox same cameras, different announcers.... As I was there I didn't watch much coverage but it would be interesting to compare....

How is it messed up? If they're doing this, it's because more people want to see taped men's matches. If anything, blame the viewers.

If you're a fan of any other tennis players other than the WS, Sharapova, Henin, and Clijsters yes. The only thing that made Miamis coverage better than IW last year was that they farmed out some of the night matches (that are usually taped delayed or even not aired because local hockey and basketball coverage on FSN/MSG+ takes precedent over tennis which is fine, but don't buy the coverage if you're going to fuck it up so badly ) and people got to see matches that they were denied at IW or even the year before at Miami. That's what was so dumb about Fox's coverage, they didn't allow TTC to air matches that they wouldn't. There were so many complaints by tennis fans and more impactful sadly  the tennis MEDIA (mainly from the 2008 atrocity of a broadcast package :help:) that some change happened.

The coverage window today was SUPPOSED  to be from 1pmEST to 6pmEST, yet they went off the air at about 5pm. :o They went to Poker. They've done it before too. A couple of years ago they left matches to air a taped sports science show and even a marathon from 6 months earlier. :help: :o :tape:  :( That's beyond nonsensical. :cuckoo: Those particular decisions aren't about viewers I don't think people are clamoring to see marathons and triathlons or sports science shows from months and months earlier.

FSN in my area shows Fishing reruns rather than Tennis. Fox is as unreliable as ever.

Great post Slammer7! It's heartening to read a post that doesn't espouse the lazy argument of "it's economics" or "it's what the people want to see" especially when those types of "arguments" rely on conjecture.

I think many people would be surprised that there are media choices have little, if anything, to do with economic sense or viewer demand.

If Fox shows equal time with the Women and Men

there is nothing bad about it.

Its much better than TTC where you see 5 min of

the Ladies play during the changeovers of hour

after hour of the mens matches.

Yeah, it's such a loss that people didn't get to see the all-time classic that was Kuznetsova vs Szavay.
Tennis is already in problems as it is and showing Kuznetsova's matches would only make it lose popularity even more.

 There might be some that like it. But FSN could have at least shown some of the end of the Ivanovic/Radwanska match.

I posted this in another thread, but I thought it was appropriate here too.

In my area (NYC) Ted Robinson said "When we come back we'll see if Wozniacki can mount a comeback." Then after the break 'Sports Science' came on. :banghead:  This is funny as hell! :rolls: Every Damned year they pull this shit. :haha: The listings and any program schedule says 1pm to 6pmEST yet they have gone off the air at 5pm both days so far. :spit: This is just unprofessional. :o They don't even tell their own freaking announcers they're leaving and at least allow them to close out the broadcast. No, it's we'll be right back and then all of the sudden it's Poker or Sports Science or a marathon from 2 years ago. :help: Their first year (2008) covering these tournaments (IW, Miami) I gave them a pass for inexperience and chalked this crap up to an unfamiliarity with broadcasting a large scale combined event, but now it's just deliberate incompetence or stupidity. Take your pick. :wavey: :o :o :o

I would love to know what's behind these decisions.
