Venus Williams took it back to the '90s with the outfit she wore Thursday night at a match in Key Biscayne. The 1890s, that is.

In her opening match at the Sony Ericsson Open, Venus wore a red, spaghetti-strapped corset trimmed with a flounce. It was part can-can, part Valentine's Day. And though it certainly flouts the conventions of tennis fashion, the dress worked: Venus won the match 6-4, 6-3.

Nobody seemed to care too much about that though. The first eight questions at the post-match press conference were about the dress.

"The motif is really about sporty sexy, and kind of that whole attitude of bringing that to my game," she said. "I usually don't wear red. This is kind of new for me."

Venus said she plans to wear the dress for her next match as well. If it continues to bring victories, who knows ... maybe she'll get one in white for Wimbledon.

I'm gonna file this under 'yet another reason to totally love and adore Venus Williams'.
This dress is really something.
Too bad yahoo showed her at her most intense moments which make her look a bit masculine. Yahoo, could you not show pictures of her like waiting to return serve or something?

Anyway, Venus you look darling. I love the 'saloon' theme of tha dress. Still, of all her famous dresses, the Von Fustenberg Wimbledon dress will never be outdone. And also the Black Eleven USO outfit from a few years back. Those two are the mount Rushmore of Venus dresses.

It is the teenies/tennies or whatever this decade is called, it is perfectly ok for anyone to look masculine or feminine esp. so for athletes!

I kind of see where you're coming from. I like the dress but I've been a little surprised at the amount of attention it's garnering. This isn't the 'Illusion of Bareness' number that was *clearly* designed to get tongues wagging, or Serena's iconic cat-suit - and it's not even at a slam.

I picked up on the Moulin Rouge vibe in an instant but it's not nearly as risque or 'insane' as some in the press would have us believe. That said the vibrant colour on her skin, her long lines and the way her body fills it out does command attention.

It's a great outfit. I actually think it's caused a bigger stir than the Aussie open outfit judging by the amount of threads and coverage it's got.

Absolutely beautiful. Venus is bringing sexy back this year; first with her AO dress and now this. But she does it in a classy way, unlike some of her counter parts.

I would too :hearts:

It would blend so well with the clay, it will look like a ghost is whacking the ball. The opponent will be like wtf freaking ghost just hit a passing shot past me.

Being fit and in toned shape as she is now makes the dress look even better on her.

Much better than that cheap, skin-tone disaster which caused some many controversies.
Look like lot of attendion to details went in to the making of this dress.
Now, Venus, apply the same level care to your second serve:)

Vee is always classy no matter what outfit she wears, all her outfits are memorable but Wimbledon 2003 was the best...

I would have agree 100% with you had it not been for those skin tone panties under the yellow dress.
That was not classy.
But I agree, all of her Wimbledon dresses have been the best. Even those shorts

I hate this topic and NEVER have made a comment on player's fashion before now. BUT I love the dress. The bold color is flattering and tho the dress does look a little like a teddy, its not sheer or 'see-thru' - so it sexy w/o being over the top. Thumbs up!

I could really care less what any of the player's wear, except when the gear is so bad its distracting. And the only example that comes to mind for me is Dinara Safina's outfits last year. You all remember the too small skirts that fit too low on her hips, combined with a "Belly Shirt" that was completely unflattering. I was thinking, "Geez, does this girl not have any friends?" If you're gonna wear a belly shirt, how 'bout some crunches and sit-ups first??? And the "plumber's look" thing going on in back - oh my. I was so glad for her she's changed this year, i felt bad for her.

I like the idea...the execution looks a little cheap. And too 'nightgownish'

I usually like Venus's outfits, but this is not good at all. And combination of red and black is definitely a thumbs down one....

:haha::haha:

I've got to quote Chris Bradnam just now on Eurosport:

"WOW! Venus Williams looks absolutely stunning! in that dress! I can't wait to see her come out on the stadium court with that dress!"

Even by Chris Bradnam standards, that was :haha::haha::haha:
