A routine early round match for Justine. ;)

Sounds like there was a "serving for the match"-fail...
But up till then 66% first serves, 90% first serves won!

Great serving stats.

Should have broken more the way Elena's serving stats looked.

What the hell was she supposed to do up against Henin who had already played a match...

Lena is a slow starter and getting Justine this early is really bad. I honestly think she'd have done better later in the tournament, but the draw is totally fucked.

Justine win 55 points to Lena's 44 points in points that were not finished by a Double fault. So let's not try to say that this was only about the DF's... Without the df's probably more like 64, 64.

She fought off two MPs and came back from 0-5 down in second.

Apart from the serve, I think she didnt play horrendously. The match took 1,5 hours and so many games went to deuce. The serve was a difference, especially 70% 1st serves in by Justine at times were shocking, plus Lena´s impressive serving day.whatever,

Let´s focus on clay.Davai!

*sigh*No one saw the match unless they were there in person, in which case they wouldn't be posting. There is no broadcast.

Justine's stats were impossibly good. Since when has she ever served 65% first serves? Usually I'm happy if she gets it over 50.

This really sucks and is unfair to Elena that she needs to draw her so soon in a match, really its the tournaments loss because if you have QF or SF again that are full of relative no names to the general public people wont watch, people wont go.. come back strong in the clay season elena

If you cant serve it effects your entire game cause you cant get any rhythm going when you double fault every 3 points... granted Dementieva has always had serving issues, but she seemed to have turned it around lately....

Anyways you cant say either way since noone SAW the match, but going by the stats it looks like Dementieva looked a mess out there...:help:

Gosh this is so disgusting really...

Elena works really hard for her ranking, to earn a higher seed, then this player retires, comes out of nowhere, steals a WC from a young promising American, and has the nerve to beat Elena again this year, in the 2nd round... it´s so unfair to Elena, as she had a lot of disapointing moments... this is so ridiculous

And the same happened in the Australian Open...

excuse me? Justine had the nerve to beat Elena? Hello, these people are elite sportswomen. It's their job to play to their best ability and win. And I love Lena D, but come on 11 dfs? It's not like she made it hard for Justine to defeat her.

Yeah the draw sucks, but its her job to just deal with it. I'm sure Justine wasn't thrilled to draw Lena either. If she has a lot of disappointing moments its her own problem and nobody elses.

You seem to be a vet here so you'd prolly know whether this 'tennisforum march madness' is a recurring thing or not, but recently it appears that the winner of almost every poll is the player who will lose the actual match.

In those polls the player with more fans or more popular always wins

What's interesting to me is that when Juju's return was heralded we were all betting as to whose life she would make difficult/untenable. ;)

A lot of people voted in Serena...
Some suggested that the Serbs (and Jaja) in particular would pay the heaviest price.
I was amongst those that felt that players like Sveta and particularly Kim would have to foot the bill.
A couple of stalwarts picked Venus.

Very few people were mentioning Elena, and if she was mentioned it was in relation to Ju and Kim both clearing out the top 5 and restoring order.

So far at least, it's Elena who has been most affected by Ju's return but we're not even halfway through the year yet. We'll see how things play out.

Its a pretty simple trend. Elena lacks the mental toughness to beat anyone that she has a negative record against. And they are usually players that can get the ball back.

Heaven forbid one of her really powerful shots up center court comes back.

OMFG! Justine is 11-2 versus Elena. Stop acting like this win is such a big shock... I did expect to be closer of course, but I am getting a little tired of how many people were actually predicting that Elena should win the match! 2-10 record when you step on the court does not make you the favorite!

Indeed.
But I guess Dementieva just has too many lovers on this planet.

The only reason Elena is the most affected is because she's drawn Juju twice already, early in a major tournament. Had the Serbs had similar bad luck with their draws, who knows, they might have been the ones most affected.

Exactly. She's not had a bad season at all with two wins already - Sydney and Paris. So all the doom and gloom about Elena tumbling down the rankings just because she gets this draw and is beaten by Justine. Anyway - as already mentione - Justine will have a ranking now so hopefully this is the last time Elena has to meet Justine in the 2nd round.

Exactly ! We all know deep down than this 5 are instrinincally the real TOP 5.

If all are healthy at the same time and play enough, the rest, Lena D included just need to pick up the pieces beginning at number 6 in the WTA.

It is just a question of time but they will all enter the top 10 and Lena will be lucky to feature in it when they do.

Lena's been playing incredibly mediocre tennis since australia, and she's not the type of player that can turn up smoking out of nowhere. She needs to grow in a tournament.
Besides this, justine is an incredibly bad match-up for her, since justine can pretty much get back anything lena throws at her with interest, and she reads elena's game really well.

On justine, i'd say she CAN play well here if she goes for it and she's fresh. She lost to serena twice, holding championshippoints in 1 of those matches. Lost to shaugnessy after a gruelling IW SF that lasted like 3 1/2 hours. Lost to pova in 05(3 sets) in her first tournament back from the virus.

She lost to dulko because of the extra musclemass they have added to her legs, now that she's had 1-2 weeks to get used to that she was obviously gonna play better. To me it was a pretty much obvious choice.

cross pova from that list, she's not getting anywhere close to the top5 with that shoulder/serve.

It's Justine! You know the player who made the Australian Open final earlier this year in her first grandslam back. She was always going to rebound from Indian Wells because she's a champion. Similar to Serena, she does not like to lose and under preform.

I'm surprised she beat Elena so bad, but I knew she'd turn it up in Miami. Hopefully it continues and she wins :)

Justine usually sucks at Miami and just lost to Dulko. Lena likes to play Miami and is the one who takes non-slam events seriously.

Just because Justine hasn't had such great results at Miami (mainly because of Serena) doesn't mean Justine doesn't take Miami seriously. And you don't win 41 titles in only a few seasons without taking events outside slams seriously.

To imply that Lena had anything but an awful draw once again because Justine went out early at IW and hasn't done so well at Miami before is rather like saying a player who draws Serena in round 1 at RG has a great draw and is favourite to win - especially if Serena loses early in Madrid.

Well she's #4 in the race - so she's actually been doing better this year than her ranking over the last 12 months unlike Sveta, Caro, Dinara. And if it wasn't for getting Justine in round #2 of the two biggest tournament - she'd almost certainly be even better. So God knows where you get this idea of her career coming to an end..

Henin was trashed by the likes of Rubin and Shaughnessy and not only by Serena at Miami.

Drawing Serena in the first round of a Grand Slam event is never a great draw as Serena has never lost in the first round of a Grand Slam event. :p

Apart from the serve, I think she didnt play horrendously. The match took 1,5 hours and so many games went to deuce. The serve was a difference, especially 70% 1st serves in by Justine at times were shocking, plus Lena´s impressive serving day.whatever,

This was more or less my reasoning, too.

But I wasn't aware of the extent to which Dementieva's retarded scheduling has apparently led to midseason burnout. I don't believe that, even in Dementieva's straightforward mind, achieving yet another of her inexplicable tokenish career goals (winning the Paris GDF) and collecting petro€€€ in Malaysia would take priority over reaching IW+Miami in good mental and physical form. It's just that this kind of thing doesn't even occur to her. She probably genuinely thinks she can continue to hog as if she was still 21 y.o.
