I hope Zheng can scrape a few more games when they come back out. I won't be too disappointed when she loses though, as I don't want her to play Jankovic, I don't like it when my favs are right next to eachother in the draw.

Congrats to Razzano though for a good result.

Is to be one of Razzano's improbable surges at a tournament? She's seemingly guaranteed one every year.

Quite strange that she was able to muster such a convincing victory. Gamestyle wise, Zheng is a nightmare match up for the Frenchwoman.

Razzano's timing can be unpredictable due to her unorthodox technique. Zheng's early-ball striking can disrupt her rythm even more.

Again, in theory.

I don't think Zheng can disrupt Razzano's rhythm all that much, precisely due to the reason you mentioned -- Razzano's timing is questionable regardless of how fast her opponent plays. Besides, Virginie herself insists on taking the ball on the rise and has a far more potent serve than Jie.
This could be the case of Zheng facing a bigger and more powerful, albeit slower, version of herself, imo.

Razzano doesn't take the ball nearly half as efficiently as Zheng does. Razzano is far less agile too, so if she's pulled out-wide by early-struck balls, she's less likely to recover.

I agree about the Razzano serve though.

Zheng's ballstriking ability is overrated, imo. Granted, she's great in absorbing the pace generated by her opponents and releasing it back at them but she's not able to blow anybody off the court and she's very mechanical and predictable in terms of shot selection.
Actually, I don't remember her ever possessing a real threat to the top-players bar Ivanovic and Jankovic who historically struggle against any flat hitter.

Safina, Serena? Was yanking both of them around, on arguablly their most effective surfaces last year.

I agree with Zheng's shot-selection. She's rythmic, clean and efficient in her shot-production, but arguably uses this aesthetic to mask her comparative lack of accuracy and placement. Na Li for example hits a more errant ball, but undoubtedly can hit with better witdth and much, much closer to the lines with sufficient enough pace. I feel that when Zheng gets in long rallies against competent ballstrikers, she inevitably has to play more defensively.

I think you're right about Zheng being unable to be pro-active with her shot-making all the time. Good point.

How could you?:p

That Rome match vs Safina was where you called Zheng 'serveless'. I'd never really speculated about her ineffective serve up until that point:lol:
