2 of the biggest tournaments of the year and no TV coverage until the start of 3r.

Disgraceful.

They cant call them Premier tournaments if they are not showing matches like Henin-Dementieva.

Its obviously not an important tournament.

it's hilarious really...is there any particular reason these Premier tournies are not shown the first week? Or is it some kind of "US" thing, which we don't get?

No pictures, very few match reports or player quotes. Interviews aren't even posted online until a day after.

Some ITF events in the US get better covereage from local news sites.

5th Grand Slam? What a joke!

Not only in USA, but in Europe we get only 1 match Sunday on ES.

Where danish Sport TV shows many hours from Saturday only mens as ES has the rights for the womens.

I totally agree!! I don't think tournaments like Miami or Indian Wells should have such a high status if they are not gonna be broadcast in some way...it is a disgrace :o As much as I critisised Madrid last year (and yes I was there :help: )...at least the matches got shown on TV.

Even some of the ITF's have live streams....pathetic that Premier tournies have such piss poor coverage :o :tape: :help:

This is big problem not only in these tournaments but all the other American tournaments. Rememeber: the first match of Kim in Cincinnati= nothing; the very interesting match between Sharapova and Azarenka=nothing....

In the US in March, most are focused on NCAA basketball, especially during prime time. The only people who are interested in tennis at this time are die hard tennis fans. I guess we should be thankful that at least the Miami finals is still shown on network tv.

I agree with this....but what about in other months?? the only US tournament that gets proper coverage is the US Open for obvious reasons

The problem is that tennis is not very popular in the US. We are in the middle of the college basketball playoffs, which is a major sports event here. Even golf gets more tv time than tennis. It is not the WTA's or tournament officials fault. The vast majority of Americans are NOT tennis fans.

Though Kim is adored by Belgians, Europeans, and most players, she is basically a nobody to the vast majority of Americans.

it's the same in Europe, Eurosport used to have a good coverage but even that has gone downhill :crying2:
Eurosport 2 is WORTHLESS , it only stopped the main EU from broadcasting Tennis even more

Yea, how many times do we have to post that tennis is waaaaaaayyyyyyyy off the radar here in the states.

People in America could care less about a Henin/Dementieva match. I know we think it's big but the majority is like "Hell 2 da nawl"

Mar 26th, 2010, 02:00 PM
I don't care what's going on in US or what they're doing with smaller tournaments like Memphis or whatever but obviously tennis is not a national sport. And IW and Miami are one of the biggest tournaments on the tour calendar. What about the fans who live in other parts of the world? They could've done something with TennisTV at least.

It doesnt matter if tennis is not the most popular sport.
ESPN2 starts their AO coverage opposite NFL playoff games.
If the WTA want the Super Tier I's to be treated as big events, they have to treat the matches like they are important

Just had a look at the Tennis TV website and they are showing a men's match on the stream so why can't they show the Elena/Justine match tonight? They don't need commentary;)
Kim's comeback in Cincinnati should have been shown on tv, that was bad, very bad.
Regarding the interviews, there is normally a 24 hour embargo on them. I think Miami isn't following this as there were some up yesterday. Grand Slams just post them when they are available which is normally a few hours after each match.

Their is no problem getting rights to these matches you guys and gals want to see,so it comes down to money. Every complaint should have a solution.

You broadcast the match over the internet with a Webcam, paying only the person that is handling the webcam. That is not costly at all. You do not need an announcer. Most announcers are a big waste of time anyway. It's so simple and all it does is help market the product better. You will need a great deal of bandwidth to accompany the viewers. The WTA and ATP should have set more morney aside for promoting the sport instead of always increasing the prize money. If new sponsors are added next season put that money into the Webcast.

Agreed, it's pathetic.

I guess the same feed goes all over the world. We don't get coverage until the start of the 3rd, men's coverage doesn't start until Sunday either.

Why the heck can't they just show the tournament from the outset, or at least from the 2nd or 3rd day???

Not that those two tournaments on hardcourt are a great help for Roland Garros either

Some year and the Miami tournament will go to China... and there will be more basketball matches to show in the US.

Its ridiculous how tennis is treated. Miami is a HUGE tournament. Outside the slams its huge!! And its no where on my television. Like how many ESPN First takes come on in one day?? And why isnt the Tennis channel a cable channel. Golf Channel is. Then why not tennis??

I cannot stand it. It is hard to increase the following of a sport when you are not showing key tournaments. The fact that there is a tennis channel that pretty much shows whatever they want whenever they want is another joke. They will have a rerun of something that has aired for the hundreth time on when there are several live tournaments going on. The fact that people have to pay for this channel is horrible.

Golf gets more coverage than tennis and it is not near as exciting as tennis.

Nobody is asking that a channel in US shows Miami

It doesn´t matter if in the place where the tournament is held they like 100 other sports , due to the status of Premier Mandatory the WTA should demand coverage since the first day

Tennis Channel should cover more of these tourneys, but then it would still be all ATP all the time.

They are taping the matches as they showed some highlights of Henin's match yesterday. So if they're doing that then you'd think there's little extra cost to actually stream them!

If you look at it dispassionately, it's probably for the best that these early round matches aren't being televised. :tape:

Tennis Channel has been a colossal failure and a study in laziness. :(

I'm so sick of the Tennis Channel that I'm actually considering canceling it from my cable package. I have to pay extra to get into the sports tier in order to get the channel and then outside of the Grand Slams they only show oldie goldie ATP matches & "specials" that I've seen four or five times before.

I understand ESPN and the regular networks not wanting to spend the cash during this part of the year to cover Miami since most people are focused on basketball but I just don't get the Tennis Channel not showing the early rounds of these tournaments, isn't that what it was founded for?

Also I've never been able to figure out why the WTA doesn't start something like an internet based subscription plan for its tournaments. They could do it either on a seasonal basis or on a month to month where you pay a certain amount and you get web access to all of the matches. If they just show web cam footage without announcers then it couldn't possibly be that expensive and it would certainly be better than no coverage at all.

Have you ever thought about why they rerun things over instead of showing live matches? They don't have the rights to show these matches especially if another network is involved. ESPN has a stranglehold on marquee matches. They won't allow the Tennis Channel to cover certain matches even if they're not showing it until later.

I've been watching most of the coverage for the last few days on FSNHD for DirectTV. For me that's the channels in the 600-668 range.
