I know she gave her Brisbane prize money in 2010, but its fresh in people's minds (and she won it 6 times already so she is sort of the backup in case they can't think of anyone else!)

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. — World No. 1 Serena Williams won the 2009 WTA Tour Player of the Year award and also took the Doubles Team of the year honors with sister Venus at a ceremony held at the Sony Ericsson Open on Wednesday.
Serena Williams, wearing high heels despite a knee injury, was all smiles when picking up her award. She won the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2009, was a semifinalist at the U.S. Open and a quarterfinalist at the French Open.
The Williams sisters won the 2009 Australian Open, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open doubles titles as well as the doubles crown at Stanford.
"It's exciting because I don't think we've won the Doubles Team of the Year award before," Serena Williams told The Associated Press. "I won the daily double today and that was cool."
U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters captured the Comeback Player of the Year and Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Award. This marked the seventh time in Clijsters career she won the sportsmanship award.
American teen Melanie Oudin, who had a breakthrough 2009 season in reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon and quarterfinals at the U.S. Open, was honored as the Newcomer of the Year. Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, who broke into the top 20 last year, won the Most Improved Player award.
Naturalized American Liezel Huber won The Player Service Award for the fourth time in her career. Among the causes Huber's raised money for are Hurricane Katrina victims and "Locks of Love," a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from medical hair loss.
Russian Elena Dementieva was voted as the Fan Favorite Singles Player of the Year by fans online.

Seeing Serena out and about in heels is kind of comforting. I'm assuming she's not greatly injured, she might have even been able to play Miami but didn't want to chance it. If that's the case then I say GREAT! Sure it would have been great for her to play but perhaps she's saving her body to storm through the clay court season all the way to her second French Open title.

I can appreciate the look she was going for and I think she pulled it off. Sure her hair is a little suspect (that weave needs a treatment and a flat iron!) and her choice of lip color is questionable at best but her body looks to be in great shape.

Here's hoping she gets the award next year.

Why don't they just rename the the KK award to the Kim C Award? Same in the ATP, as Federer always wins. Enough already!Name one other female top tennisser who is better than Kim at being "good sports". Just one.

I guess this is one of those awards that is always given to the real winner no matter what (irrespective of whether the winner has already won it previously or not, which is what often happenes at awards in general (see Oscar for example).

In other words, here merit is supreme. There's no egalitarian "she already got one in the past, so let's give it to the second best this time" BS. And it just so happenes that, year after year, Kim is the best :p

Lisicki won Charleston which is way more important tournament than Estoril and Linz (too bad though, I loved Linz as a Premier tournament). Lisicki defeated Kuznetsova, Wozniacki when reaching the QF in Wimbledon. Who did Wickmayer beat when getting to that USO SF? Kvitova, Razzano, Errani,..
For me Sabine improved more than Yanina.

I think Sam was out of the top 50 for a short period in early 2009. What do you mean with Sabine's improvement is a little bit worse ? And what has Wickmayer's WADA issues to do with the most improved player ?

I think Sam was out of the top 50 for a short period in early 2009. What do you mean with Sabine's improvement is a little bit worse ? And what has Wickmayer's WADA issues to do with the most improved player ?

sam even fall out of top-150 in 2008 due to injury

sabine gained less spots on the ranking, and it's not yanina's fault that the safinas and kuznetsovas were eliminated by others at the us open.

Everyone knew Lisicki was talented and she had big expectations even before 2009. Wickmayer wasn't very highly regarded at all, so when she had her breakthrough it was more "out of nowhere" and seen as a sign of a player who improved hugely. Maybe Lisicki deserved it more, but the general perception would be that Wicky had improved more.

She advanced from 69th place to 18th.

This is ridiculous Federer got this award. He had to pay fine for his behaviour at US Open.

Maybe if umpires voted he wouldn't have won :tape:

Besides (and I know she's injured) the way Sabine's playing right now they would have had to take it back...:tape:

(and I love Sabine).

As for the sportsmanship award Im fine with Kin winning every year , what I don“t get is why Carlos Moya never got the award on the ATP. Better attitude on court than Federer , more gentleman and humble

Apparently players don't share your opinion.

Lisicki started the year on the 54th place and was 23th at the end of the season. If we look at the rankings Wickmayer is better.

Obviously not

In my opinion nobody fits better the Stefan Edberg sportsmanship award than Carlos Moya . Have you seen a bad gesture from him on court , interviews , off court ?

Im surprised Moya never won the award and Federer wins every year not giving credit to his rivals , throwing racquets , acting like an Ego King .

Moya never was a huge star.Fans don't know him very well personally as well as they do Federer Nadal and other big stars. If we were reading every word he said 24/7 you would find something to criticise. Your outside opinion has no meaning against players opinions who almost live a whole career together.

You didn't understand.I mean if Moya was in the spotlight all the time you would find something to criticise about him too.We don't know or care about what he says in interviews. Some psychos study federer's interviews like they will have an exam the next day :tape: Whoever wins this award clueless gfans will object no matter what others say. Some people think clijsters is phony. it should have been:

Newcomer of 2009: Wickmayer

Most improved of 2009: Martinez Sanchez

Oudin won a prize because she is American. If she was Russian or French for sure she was not gonna win the prize.

Ranking is important, but should not be crucial for final decision.

Oudin not only improve to TOP50, but she is still youngest player into WTA TOP100! And which is way more impressive than her TOP50 rank at last two slams of 2009 (Wimbledon and US Open) she defeat 5 seeds including some really big WTA names like Sharapova, Jankovic, Dementieva and Petrova! Of course that she deserve "newcomer of the year" award for 2009!

Similar thing is with Wickmayer who reach USO SF right from nowhere. Stosur improvement is also impressive and unexpected, but she is WTA veteran (former #1 in doubles and solid TOP30 player in singles) and Lisicki in 2009 just continue her progress from 2008, nothing unexpected.

No it wasn't. He still won.Fans opinions are very different from players who actually know each other. Obviously he has very good relationship with most players otwerwise he wouldn't have won it so many times. You hear how he congratulated Isner for his first title and things like that that seem very minor but it's those little things that makes a person a good sportsman not being a emotionless robot that makes fans think you are a saint.Everybody curses on the court sometimes but his problem was with the umpire. They don't vote though  You don't know anything about him personally so I'll take player's judgement over a twitter stalker.

So right. It had nothing to do with her jumping 120 ranking spots, making it into the top 45, making Wimbledon R16 beating JJ and making the USO QFs beating Dementieva and Sharapova. Fluke award for her clearly.

I didn't said that she is not a good player, she is fantastic young player BUT there are just players that improve much better than her in 2009: MJMS jumped over 60 places to the top 30, won 2 single titles and became fantastic doubles player. Or Stosur that made it to the SF of the FO and she jump from outside to the top 50 and just look where is she now. Melanie had great year but they had better year and more deserved the award. so why she won it? it's the truth...

Dementieva won Most Improved, and she's not American either.

Then your whole last post was irrelevant since you were comparing Melanie to MJMS and Stosur and saying how they improved more than her, which was then pointless since she didn't even win that award. She was given Newcomer, so then shouldn't your argument have been that how they were more impressive than Yanina and not Melanie. So then Yanina was a better Newcomer. But you didn't, instead you say she won the award because she is American. But whatever, I don't want to argue over this.

I think Kim doesn't deserve this award. She played only three tournaments. It should have been given to a girl who played all mandatory events and did more things for the tour.

it's not given, her peers voted the way they did. So go whining at your favs :p. It's also not about what a player did for the tour, but about sportsmanship during matches, trustworthyness, being nice etc. on and off the court. Like when Kim told the umpire the ball was IN, in her own disadvantage, when the linesman had called her opponent's ball OUT.

Congrats everyone with the award(s)! :worship: :worship: Especially Yanina! Well done girl! Lena's hair :)
