Sam Stosur fancies her French Open chances

AAP From: AAP March 23, 2010 4:00PM

SAM Stosur believes she has the game to win the French Open.

Stosur today officially became the first Australian woman since Alicia Molik in 2005 to crack the world's top 10 - then promptly declared herself a frontline contender to reign in Paris at the season's next grand slam event in May.

Turning 26 next Tuesday, Stosur surprised many with a breakthrough run to the semi-finals at Roland Garros last year, ultimately falling in three tight sets to eventual champion Svetlana Kuznetsova.

While former Australian Davis Cup winner John Alexander once touted Stosur a future Wimbledon champion, the Queenslander believes her high-kicking serve and heavy groundstrokes may be ideally suited to the French now that she's finally adapted to the challenging slow surface.

"Given the lack of experience that I had playing on clay when I was younger and growing up through the juniors and everything, and how long it took me to win a match at Roland Garros, maybe it was a bit of a surprise (last year)," Stosur said.

"But I think that clay actually does suit my game and, over the years the more I've been able to play on it, the more I've adapted and appreciated what I have to do out there and I actually enjoy it more now.

"So I think for sure my serve suits it, my forehand, the way I hit with spin and everything, I should play pretty well on clay, I think.

"So it's just a matter of before the season starts on the clay to get as much practice in as possible." Stosur's more immediate focus - before the clay season begins next month - is this week's prestigious event in Miami, the very place where her form and rankings surge began last year with victories over Dinara Safina and Amelie Mauresmo en route to the quarter-finals.

Her twin successes at the $US4.5 tournament known in tennis circles as "the fifth slam" sparked her watershed season, during which Stosur landed her maiden WTA title in Osaka and was also the only player to topple every one of the year-ending world's top five - including the great Serena Williams.

As ninth seed, Stosur will enjoy a first-round bye in Miami before taking on either Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro or Russian wildcard Anastasia Pivovarova in her opening match.

The Australian is unconcerned about the pressure of having to defend a mass of rankings points to retain her lofty position in the top 10 as the year rolls on.

"I guess this is a good test," Stosur said. "Straight up I make it and straight up I've got a few points to defend.

"But I'm not going to start freaking out about defending points or anything like that. Just each week I'm going to try and do better and better."

Stosur says it's especially satisfying to have overcome career-threatening illness to become only the eighth Australian woman since rankings were established in 1975 to reach the top 10.

The former top-ranked doubles player's latest career milestone comes less than two years after she was forced out of the game for six months with the debilitating Lyme disease, an infection transmitted by the bite of ticks.

"Since I started playing again, I wanted to get there," she said. "You never really know if it's ever really going to happen."

Anyway, last year she made the SF and took the eventual champ to 3 sets. She came a lot closer than most.

Head line Vs actual article = Big difference.

Its a fact Sam reached the SF at RG and she thinks her game is suited to clay. So shot her or sue her if it bothers you.

She was also just in the SF in IW. Despite some people don't like her, Sam is player her game and with a top 10 ranking, you cant argue not without some success!

"Sam Stosur believes she has the game to win the French Open"

What the article's title says.

"My game, particularly my serve and my FH, is well suited to clay, I'm feeling confident ahead of the clay season, and I'll try to play my best every week without thinking of what points and/or place on the ranking I maybe defending"

What Stosur says.

I always thought Sam had the gamestyle to win Roland Garros compared to Wimbledon.
She has such heavy topspin on her forehand.
And her serve works well on clay.

I actually think that Sam is overrated on grass.
She does have good net awareness but in singles her volleys are all over the place.
You would expect her as a multiple grand slam winner in doubles to be capable of better volleys but many times her volleys find themselves in the net.

I don't agree with you. Yes she reached her first GS final but she is the overwhelming favorite for this final. Schiavone comes playing very well but she hasn't beat anyone outstading. Stosur beat Henin, Serena and Jankovic so she is expected to win it all.

And I think she feels she should winning it becuase she has played so well this past weeks.

It's all well and good bumping this thread up seeing as Sam's so close to winning the French Open singles competition, but that's all it is at the moment: she's close.

Thus, it would have been a better idea, and it would have made more sense to bump the thread once (or if) she wins the title either on Saturday or whenever.

Which makes me think, this thread is going to be all about irony and embarrassment if Sam loses on Saturday, especially to those who are acting as if Sam's already won.

Even if you don't see the posts here, that little fact is pointless anyway to the main point I was making.

The fact of the matter is, pretty much everyone on the first two pages of this thread discredited Stosur as a French Open champion. A few weeks later, this thread is bumped WHEN Stosur is still one match away from the title and therefore could still lose. Some people just don't understand tennis, the game.

In Henin's first ever tournament on the tour she won it! And in Serena's first tournament (in her first full pro-year) she beat Lindsay Davenport world #3. So it was pretty obvious they would become great players.

Stosur for most of her career has not had an impressive game in singles, so I'm not sure why this high and mighty attitude is coming from some people.

So what? You fail to understand that people are not saying "Oh yeah, you are a tard, Sam has got the title in the bag", but rather "you are an idiot for giving her no chance to win the title, when she is so close". Laughing at someone saying she will NEVER win the French when she is one match away is not stupid, b/c these people are still idiots for counting her out completely. These people never thought she'd beat Serena or Henin in a Slam (ok, I never thought she would either, but I never say never or make :weirdo: statements like that).

This thread isn't so ridiculous in my opinion. I originally didn't think she had the game to win the French Open, but even after this loss, I'd still say that I've been proven wrong. She managed to make the final, and went in as a favourite, so it's not hard to imagine that she does have the game to do it.
