One of Venus' many talents is to make easy things difficult at times, so let's see how she plays during her first match and take it one at a time.

True, not her favorite matchup

Still, I would favor Venus as this is Miami.

Her rd16 opponent could be quite interesting, a lot of my faves in that section...Dani, Patty, Kimiko, Anna, Nadia.

If all depends on which Venus shows up. If it is post AO Venus then she will be fine, if it is AO quarters Venus then  Hope Richard and Lakeshia are there to keep her on track! Go Venus, you can do this! Pretend it is Dubai, if you have to.;)

I hope her head is on straight and she is hungry; otherwise, any draw is tough.

Venus does have a nice draw. She could potentially face Li in the semis. Other than Li and MAYBE Kuznetsova, she should be in the finals

Midnight_Robber
Mar 22nd, 2010, 11:34 PM
It's up to Venus of course - but hmmm.

I prefer explicitly tougher draws, because she turns up primed for action tends to stay more focused and is less likely to run up against some young player she's never played before only to... yeah well. Venus fans will *know* what I'm talking about. Tougher draws are better for sharpening your game - you get more out of those encounters and they build you up for a finals in a way that a 'cakewalk' draw simply doesn't.

If Vee progresses round by round playing Hantuchova always seems to test her game without putting her in serious danger, whereas Flavia tends to bring it against Venus and plays her hard. If she a.) meets Flavia b.) Flavia plays well and c.) she gets past her then it might do her good. Meeting up with Li or Sveta in the semis could also be a good thing.

Yes she has a nice draw didnt say it was going to be easy because now a days everyone comes out swinging.but she does have a nice draw with no henin or clijsters yet.Regardless how hard or easy Venus just has to come out ready no matter what.So with that said its game on Venus from the very first point and good luck. And yes as a true Venus fan I do know that she needs to be primed for every match not just so called hard ones.Every match is hard but with smart play and focus she can do it.

If Venus wins Miami she'll have a realistic shot at being ranked #2 in time for Wimbledon (considering Serena is #1 it would ensure they would be seeded #1 and #2 for wimbledon).

Wozniacki, Safina and Kuznetsova have lots of points to defend in the clay court season as well as the French open while during the clay court season all Venus really has to defend are semi final points in Rome and she only reached the 3rd round of the French Open last year.

So if Venus can have a relatively decent run during the clay court season and at least make the 4th round of the French Open she could be ranked #2 for Wimbledon (but winning Miami will be necessary for this to be a realistic consideration).

She also has played more and longer on the tour than most other players since she has played tournaments since 1994(!). So while she has won more than than anyone else on teh tour, she also has lost a lot, especially in the last 6-7 years outside off grass. And I'm not hating on Venus, I'm just stating the facts.

that's silly: length on tour has very little do do with it. lots of folks have been on tour a long time and don't have the titles to show for it.

In addition, over the course of her career, Venus was out a lot with injury and has always played a limited schedule. She turned pro in 1994, but didn't play anything close to a real full schedule until 1997.

The last statement is true, the rest not so much. Venus played 16 or more tournaments in 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2009. Those are not limited schedules. And injuries really affected her amount of play in tournaments only in 3 years since 1998: In 2000, 2003 and 2006.

on grass, Venus has a 87% career win/loss percentage (placing her in the top three overall in the history of women's open tennis)
on hardcourts, Venus has a 81% career win/loss (placing her in the top ten overall in the history of women's open tennis)
on clay, Venus has a 78% career win/loss percentage (place her in the top ten overall in the history and second among active players)--you know, her worst surface!

oh and across all surfaces?
Venus has an 80% career win/loss percentage (placing her in the top ten overall in the history of women's open tennis).

again, number of years on tour is not relevant. she mostly wins. that's why when she loses, lots of folks are scratching their heads. :wavey:

The post of Matt01 you responded to with the above is actually on target. Not sure why you responded in this manner.for what? his post didn't support his argument because it basically said that there were only five years since 1994 when she officially turned pro that she played a full schedule.

therefore her tournament wins can not be linked to the notion that she is leading the tour in titles because she's played longer.

get it now?!

Why is that any of your concern? I can respond to whoever in any manner I wish, in line with rules and regulations.

And of course a Justine Henin fan such as yourself would think his post is on target, especially since Venus has recently surpassed Justine in title count. Talk about excuses and scraping the barrel; now it's "Venus has played longer [and therefore has had more chances to win titles]". Keep telling yourself that

I feel as usual that its in Venus hands.I wish her well regardless. It's Venus career and she has accomplished more than any of us ever will. She is living her dream and all we can do if we are Venus fans is wish her well.If you are not a fan then still dont wish anyone ill will. The players are out there doing there jobs.We dont know these tennis players on an intimate level meaning we dont hang out with them.We just know them thru there games and the tv.All this talking down about them is crazy and all the bashing of the fans is crazy.Lets just all agree to disagree.
