Expected. JJ's early ball-striking and precise depth and placement proved to be the kind of steady aggression that all pushers hate.
She chipped away at Wozniacki shot by shot until she got the easy ball to put away.

For a few games at the end of the first set and start of the second, Wozniacki tried to inject more pace into her shots and actually go for winners, but her groundstroke technique was absolutely inept for generating pace and she hit some hilarious errors. Keep on pushing, girl.

Caro's made Jelena looked like a super big hitter. Sorry, Caroline but that's how far your game takes you when the opponent doesn't make errors and is more solid than you from the baseline.
Congrats to Jelena, the best I've seen her play since 2008.

Caro was hopless :help: The difference between that and her last match was huge.

Jankovic was awesome though, welcome back JJ! Thats more like it, we need her back up the top of the tour.

If Jelenaa is able to sustain that level of play, she will be more accomplished then when she got to number 1. Much more aggresive, nice to see.

Another bad match to cap off the bad week for WTA. I've been defending Wozniacki all week but honestly, even the most brainless ball basher wouldn't have made as many brainless decisions as she did. Why she would miss 5 easy returns in Jankovic's last two service games -- when her opponent was clearly getting tight -- is beyond me. And what kind of pusher makes that many unforced errors?

Fuck Yes! so happy for JJ, i didn't think i'd see her win another big title again. She played the perfect match tactics-wise by remaining patient in the long rallies and waiting for the right time to go for an attacking shot and it really paid off. I haven't seen her play as well as that for a long while. The match was a lot better than the W/UE show because there were a lot of long rallies.

Too good from JJ. Much, much better than of the matches I've seen from her today. Pushniacki was just not going to beat her today, but I believe she should've stuck to pushing instead of her pathetic, dismal "aggression." :help:

Jankovic played pretty well. The only thing she could have improved was her 1st serve % She kept the errors down, had good tactics and moved well. Hopefully she'll keep this form up and be in the mix again. We need more of the top players at their best.

Wozniacki had her worst day of the tournament today by far   She looked soooo nervous throughout the match and made many uncharacteristic errors. She got going a bit more from 0-2 down in the 2nd set. She had chances on Jankovic's serve at 1-2, 3-4 and 4-5, but she didn't capitalize on them.

Too good from JJ today. Her serving weakness of only being able to serve second serves to the fh on the deuce court is completely neutralised against Caroline, since her fh is weaker. Her extra aggressiveness paid off too, I like what I saw from JJ's groundstroke game. Caro's game is always a test, but a fair test- if you play well enough against her you are more or less guaranteed to win. Not many of the women today play well enough, but JJ did today. Caro needs to do something about her fh, which pretty much can only brush the ball. Her fh broke down today almost completely.

The unforced error stats that were showed are probably not fair on Caro. Many of those errors were basically forced from her fh. It's subtle, but there is a technical issue with her forehand, she is not good at hitting through the contact point on it, so deep balls are very tough for her (and sometimes other balls too that don't seem tough). Her contact is always a brush, and unlike most players she cannot adjust it to hit flatter, so sometimes on difficult-to-time balls she tries to brush and the ball doesn't even make the net, while many other players, sensing the risk of mistiming the shot, would hit through the contact more and make sure they got clean strings on the ball.

This match amused me for a number of reasons:
-Snezzana taking the obligatory sip of "water" on match point.
-The British commentators who gushed over both women's games far too much. At 5-3 they praised Wozniacki for being a good loser and "not throwing her toys of the pram."
-Wozniacki's game was just awful. Forehand and volleys :spit:

Never in doubt. I preditced this exact outcome before the tournament started.

Jankovic did what every top-player should do to the weaponless Dane -- outplayed Wozniacki in all aspects of the game.
I wanna specially thank Jelena for exposing Wozniacki's extreme lack of options in her game. I had a good laugh when, towards the end of the match, Wozniacki, out of pure desperation I guess, tried to go for her non-existent shots.

Congrats Jelena! :yeah:

I don't really know what to think. Jankovic now holds two of the biggest hardcourt titles on tour (a Mandatory and Premier5) and is still well inside the top 10 yet it feels like she's been in a slump the past year. She has hardly done anything in 2010 anyway. And I can't believe that watching this match I'm thinking of Jankovic as a player from "the good old days", seriously 2008 seems like a whole different era to me now.

Dodoboy.
Mar 21st, 2010, 08:52 PM
Still #2 :yeah:

But seriously, that was dishearting, disappointing and DISGUSTING from Caro. She CAN play better, didn't get enough first serves in the first set - i remember last year she'd average at about 78%, she was about 33% for most of the first set. Some good patches from her, but JJ (Her worst possible match - who is a 'better' version of her) exposed EVERY weakness in Caro's game. Her forehand, transition game, her second serve return - all of these things STILL need work! JJ did play well though, but Caro was just AWFUL today. 34 errors? Must be very rare for her.
She'll figure out JJ soon, like she did Dementieva - just not on a day like this from JJ. Big win Jelena, well done.

Well done Jelena! Totally exposed how bad Wozniacki's FH is and played pretty confidently and patiently to win a match she totally dominated. It's good to have this aggressive and athletic Jankovic back. Her volleys weren't really great but I did like the fact that she came to the net, like in 2006.

Wozniacki couldn't do anything against a player as consistent as her but way more complete. Tennis won. :)

She looked in great shape, her serve was very good, and her movement was excellent. If she can continue to work hard, she should be a threat to anyone on the tour. That was truly amazing. She totally destroyed Caroline who did nothing wrong. First few games, as I was expecting, she came out so strong and it was obvious she was head and shoulders above Caoline. This was some of the best tennis (http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?p=17457499&posted=1#) I have seen for ages and she is now back to her best. Lovely emotional speech. No denying Jankovic is one of my least favourite players on the WTA tour, however I refuse to fall to the pathetic and juvenile level of so many posters here on TF.

Suffice to say, Caroline played rather poorly. To put it mildly and Jankovic was much better tactically prepared for the final. Credit to her and her camp for that.

And now all the haters are happy. The losing finalist and world No 2 is still just a teenager and still improving. Like Caroline will surely have learned from todays loss.

Caroline is still the one for the future :)

Caro, good luck in Miami, hope to see you in the final with Venus! She was bad only because JJ had answers for everything. JJ was painting the lines. JJ demonstrated how to use the angles. JJ strikes the ball beautifully. All JJ had to do was to keep the pressure on Caroline - there was no need for her to keep up the level of those first few games by then, mentally, she had shown Caroline how superior JJ is. Caroline only hit 34 errors because JJ destroyed her confidence and her game.

Caro = Pusher
JJ = Counterpuncher

She doesn't go all in on every point, but she does once she outpositioned her opponent.;)
Whenever Caro had the chance to go for a knock-out punch, she either just pushed it back or out or in the net, because she's not the mental GOAT some people would like to make her out to be. JJ put too much pressure on her and she folded underneath it.

And don't you worry about JJ not going far with her game. She already got to No.1 and we the fans are gonna celebrate this as long as we want!:worship::wavey:

This performance reminded me of the match when she beat Dementieva at the 2006 USOpen QF. She was very agressive with the forehand back then and attacked Elena's serve whenever possible. A very similar performance today.

She'll figure out JJ soon, like she did Dementieva

What was to figure out about beating Dementieva? Considering Lena D. plays absolutely braindead almost every time they play there's not much to work out. That's certainly not the case when she has to play Jankovic who is a superior tactician/match player and that's the biggest key to this match-up. Dementieva does do nearly everything better than Wozniacki on the face of it but not tactically.

In this case, Jankovic does everything better than Wozniacki on the face of it, including tactically. She's faster, more agile and thus a better defender. Hits a more consistently deep balls and it's much more penetrating. She moves the ball around much better and can play more angles. Her technique is better and when she cranks up the pace of the rallies she knows Wozniacki's primitive technique will crack before hers. Wozniacki is forced to take way more risks against Jankovic than against practically anyone else.

Unlike some people in this thread, I don't think Wozniacki's level dipped much from her play here throughout the week. She was up against a much better version of herself and found her own game randered useless which is why she went for more winners than usual. Of course her technique couldn't withstand this and threw in a heap of ugly UEs.

JJ was playing tennis as it supposed to be played.I never thought it was a crime to outposition you opponent? Caroline should pay JJ for the lesson she taught her today. I think once Caroline gets over this she will learn to add to her game and be stronger.

It certainly isn't a crime to outmaneuver the opponent. The issue of concern was that JJ, at no point in the match, showed any "strength of shot" ability while playing another pusher whose normal shot was probably in the 40-50 mph range.

JJ was the better pusher today, the last woman standing at the tournament and has the title to document it. But, JJ is a pusher, which was my point.

Having watched the entire match, the question in my mind is: How did these two players get to the IW Final? It was, afterall, a rather poor all around performance.

A pusher is not simply someone who hits with little pace. She is someone who hits with little pace and placement and has little desire to end points on her own terms, preferring to bring balls back high over the net and far from the lines over and over again, hoping to bore her opponent into gifting her unforced errors.

Radwanska hits with even less weight of shot than Wozniacki but no one would accuse her of being a pusher. Incompetent and useless, yes, but not a pusher.

Of course her technique couldn't withstand this and threw in a heap of ugly UEs.Great analysis.

Still feel we were brutally robbed of a Sara Errani-Vania King final.

In that case we would probably ask Caroline to save WTA lol :help:

It certainly isn't a crime to outmaneuver the opponent. The issue of concern was that JJ, at no point in the match, showed any "strength of shot" ability while playing another pusher whose normal shot was probably in the 40-50 mph range.

JJ was the better pusher today, the last woman standing at the tournament and has the title to document it. But, JJ is a pusher, which was my point.

Having watched the entire match, the question in my mind is: How did these two players get to the IW Final? It was, afterall, a rather poor all around performance.

Oh please! Not today. Go rain on someone else's parade!:wavey:

JJ played great and hit some AWESOME WINNERS in this match. Counter punching at it's finest.

They both got there by beating their opponents or their opponents beating themselves (Nadia). Either way, both deserved it and the haters can suck it!

It's a shame that Caroline is under so much criticism here, first JJ, then Dinara and now Caro gets all the crap for achieving a high ranking... Pathetic
I'm not a fan but I hope she reaches #1 one day without winning a GS. This board would go :weirdo:

Of course her technique couldn't withstand this and threw in a heap of ugly UEs.I don't totally agree with that. She did go for more winners than usual under the assumption that her game won't be good enough - which is true if JJ is hitting the ball well. But when she stuck to her more usual game, the game got tighter and they both went on serve. It is probably counter-intuitive to go on the Jankovic bh since it's the better shot, but she made quite a few UE on it today, while her forehand was doing the trick with the short cross-court angle on Woz's fh that was opening up the court. I think Woz played tactically wrong in the first set (start of second), and should've stuck to her own game. It could have been a closer match.

IMO, she started off the first 4 games playing the way she normally does, Jankovic came out playing her best and it was 4-0 pretty quickly. Jankovic's level dipped somewhat and so it became tighter once Wozniacki started "pushing" again but it was still a high enough level for Jankovic to make it a comfortable win.

Wozniacki knows her own limitations and knew that Jankovic was playing too good for her to have a chance at beating her just trading her usual moonballs from the baseline so that's why she started throwing in many more uncharacteristic UEs than usual.

There was pretty much nothing Wozniacka could do there. The match only got close after those opening games because JJ's level came down, not because Wozniacka was reverting to her usual game. She played her usual game at the start.

JJ was going forehand to forehand with Caro (usually not a good play for JJ because the forehand is her weak side, but in this case it made sense.) To redirect the ball to JJ's backhand, Caro would have to hit the lower percentage shot DTL. Her forehand technique is so crummy that it's difficult for her to lift the ball over the high part of the net and keep it deep and in the court. Anything short and JJ would be all over it on the backhand.

OK. I did not watch the first 4 games, so I just assumed that she was bashing since the start of the first. That makes sense then.

It's both. Those bashing games were very costly for her. It's how JJ broke her in the second set, the only break. That's the advantage of having a pushing game. You take advantage when your opponent starts misfiring. After her father talked to her in the second set, she reverted to taking less risks and being more patient.

Good points, but I think she was also tactically going for the jankovic fh. Even fh from the middle of the court were directed to the JJ fh. It usually makes sense, but the bh wasn't really that good today.

Jelena did in any way "overpower" Wozniacki... She outplayed and outmaneuvered her by taking the ball early, changing direction of the ball, using some stout defense, precision and occasional net forays. Winning rallies with winner or forced is often not about "overpowering" someone.

There were 6 former champions in the draw
Henin, Clijsters, Sharapova, Hantuchova, Ivanovic, Zvonareva.
So Jelena joins them. These were the last 2 USO finalists, so the only surprise is that they did not seem to be in form coming in

I only saw second half of second set and it was more Jelena playing the right stuff than Caro playing totally horrendously. For example-the game at 5-3, Caro put all first-serves in (5) one of them was an ace, she was agressive and won the game convincigly.

But Jelena played so smart. Those angles followed up with fast DTL shots. She showed the way how to play Wozniacki. (Hope Lena saw the match :) )

Caro just didnt turn up, and Janka turned it on big time. She played so far above the level she has displayed this week is was scary.

Woza's forhand was pathetic, it is nothing more than a 'get it back' stroke, there is no venom on it ever.

The entire match was on Janka's raquet, on mistakes could lose her the match. She did get tight at points, but Woz coudlnt hold serve to really put any heat on her.

The commentator was right, if Woz wants to beat attacking players that are on their game, she needs to change.
