Great match.

In words of English commentator: "Thoroughly entertaining match"

Great play from both.

Excellent match! Well done Caro! Jie played so well, but in the end, it was the expected winner that came through. I can't get over how mentally mature Caroline is for a 19 year old.

Caroline is the new world #3 now right? And #2 if she beats Radwanska?

this was a tough match  lots of long rallies. I didn't know Zheng could be so emotional on court-her shrieks when she missed in the 3rd set were cracking me up  it's hard not to love her.

Is it too much to ask to have a results thread with the players' actual names?

Also, Nadie Petreng missed so many easy putaways, especially smashes in the third set :tears: but well done Caro.

I saw only a set worth of pushing out of three. The first two sets were all great hitting from both sides. The difference ultimately was- Caro reverts to pushing when tired, while Jie tries to hit through her fatigue and makes more errors.
But, Caro hit deep and hard a lot. She is no longer a pusher.
Jie is pretty amazing when she is on.

Funniest part was the contrast in them removing a bug from court.

- A bug lands on Zheng's side and Zheng walks up and carefully pushes the little bug repeatedly until it's happily residing just off the court. Crowd chuckles.

- A bug lands on Caroline's side and Caroline walks up and WHACKS the bug so it flies into the crowd whereupon she raises her hand in apology. Crowd laughs.

Great effort from Caroline against a very tough opponent. It was a real battle of the wills out there. Only after Caroline managed to finally hold serve for a 5-1 lead in the final set did Jie look defeated. Anyone who still thinks Caroline can't do anything but "push" the ball on a tennis court after watching this very entertaining match is simply seeing things through the distorted lens of prejudice. (She was a lot more passive against Petrova, but then she didn't really need to take it to the next level against an opponent who was only too happy to self-destruct).

 and :hatoff: to Jie, who still managed to impress me quite a bit in defeat. She's got a lot of heart and can create some amazing acute angles, especially on the backhand, and is very good at transforming defense into offense in baseline rallies. Definitely my favorite Chinese player.

Actually this was a parody on the Golden Flower thread titles that a certain member here constantly uses. With a twist.

I usually stay pretty PC with my titles.

Of course, if it bothers you that much, you could check out "who's won" at the WTA site...

This match proves that Wozniacki is capable of stepping up her game when necessary. She just chooses not to most of the time because she knows her "pushing" is enough to get it done against most players.

Glad she's back on track after a lame start to the season. She's definitely a strong favourite for the title now.

Mar 18th, 2010, 08:09 PM
Hmmm. Saw some of this match and it wasn't bad at all. I agree that Zheng did look exhausted but she played well for the most part. The result isn't a surprise. Still prefer Zheng's brand of tennis to Caro (she attacks more), but Caro played to win. I can imagine Jie winning at least a few of their future encounters - she has the game to do it - in I can't help but wonder what would happen if Jie had a stronger serve (first and second)... It's really good to have the ability to fight and to take a match out in three sets if need be, but in terms of a tournament, it's got to be valuable to be able to sometimes put your opponent away in two and reserve some energy. Still, be curious to see if Caro can take it all or not.

In what dictionary does "tear petals off of" mean "trash"?

She handed her a breadstick in the third set and kicked her out of the tournament. That's enough to qualify in my book.
