RG of 2011 or 2012?
RG is the wrong and worst kind of tournament for what hailing Maria.

I wish she can skip it to focuss to Wimbleon.
And the way thinsg have been going lately, I doubt she would be able to play Wimby if she plays RG pass 3 rd round.

3rd year in a row Maria played IW(just doubs last year) and missed Miami.
I think she should blow off the clay season.
Rest, then train with a real tennis coach and prepare for Birmingham.

I don't think it is as simple as you make it sound.

Apparently, she still has physical issue, and that does not allow her to serve as she should and or want to.

Tennis-Sharapova faces up to six weeks out with elbow injury

(Reuters) - Maria Sharapova faces up to six weeks out of action due to an elbow injury, organisers of next week's Sony Ericsson Open said on Wednesday.
The three-times grand slam champion was due to compete in the event at Key Biscayne, Miami but an MRI scan revealed a bone bruise on her right elbow.

Organisers said in a statement that the Russian, who won earlier this year in Memphis but had an early exit at Indian Wells on Sunday, was expected to miss three-to-six weeks of competition.

World number two Dinara Safina and 2008 Sony Ericsson men's champion Nikolay Davydenko have also withdrawn from this year's Miami event. Russian Safina is suffering a back injury while Davydenko has a left wrist fracture.

Sony Ericsson must be pissed. She's sponsored by the company but she's always playing IW only to withdraws from their event.

The description "bone bruise" doesn't sound that severe, but I wonder if it's like tennis elbow. That could be painful. She finished that match against Zheng after getting medical treatment, much like she finished against Domachowska in Montreal after tearing her rotator cuff. I know she's a fierce and determined competitor, but sometimes discretion is the better part of valor.

A Bruise is a colored spot on your skin that you see if you hurt yourself by an external object.

(running onto the table with your leg => colored spot)

But bruises on the bone tend to be more painfull and purple colored. I have one of hitting my racket on leg :rolls:

Sad to hear!

Bruising on the bone can be really serious. It can be quite painful and can also take a long time to heal, depending on the severity. My grandfather was kicked by a bully in the heel of his left foot when he was a child. His bone was bruised so badly that part of his foot had to be amputated...

Anyway, Maria's should probably be fine in a few weeks with some rest.

I wonder when it happened. Did anyone see her fall or bang her elbow with her raquet in the match against Zheng?

Mikey.
Mar 18th, 2010, 01:26 AM
I think it can also happen by doing repetitive activities excessively, ie playing tennis. I guess you can in some instances think of it as tendinitis or RSS (or RSI) but for the bones.

Mar 18th, 2010, 01:27 AM

You can get a bruise without contact on the spot, for example, your elbow is not placed correctly and you try to overhit a ball, the ball impact can bruise the bone :)

Honestly there is not need to knock Maria, for something in life happening she has no control over. None of us can see the future and we make plans hoping for it to be positive but alas life throws us a curve and we're thrown off the course we set.

Maria's career looked promising, she had fight and a will to win so she got the $$$$ it might not be what some of us like but such is life

For whoever said 'google it', because they didn't know the answer to the question, but wanted to be a smart-ass, here's what you get when you google "bone bruise (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=&as_epq=bone+bruise&as_oq=&as_eq=&num=10&lr=&as_filetype=&ft=i&as_sitesearch=&as_qdr=all&as_rights=&as_occt=any&cr=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&safe=images)"

It's worth reading through eight of ten of those links. Especially the medical stuff about bone degeneration and bone bruises as predictors of future injuries.

Amelie Mauresmo made the OZ final when she was 20, as a power baseliner, injured her back, and had to change not just her game, but her body, and her whole method of training. And she came back and won two slams. Sharapova's not done, but I think she's going to need a new style of play. I'd bet money the elbow injury is a result of compensating for the shoulder.

She looks fit..but since she had a surgery at her shoulder, she might need to be fitter than usual. To get some specific muscles stronger. She may look "fit" as thin...but maybe she lacks of muscles...I really think she'll need to work on her body way more than before. Specific training,to suit her new gamestyle and technic.

You think the post surgery-rehab was not done correctly.
Especially, the muscle strenghtening needed by an athlete.

Well if she has develloped another injury whom is most likely caused by her new technic or the fact that she might be compensating for her shoulder, cuz she had never had any trouble with her elbow before her shoulder problem...they might have only rehab her shoulder, making exercise and adjustement to protect her shoulder, without planning a trainning for her whole body to prevent injury resulting from her new technic. If your body is used to move in a certain way, it will react to any small changes. I don't know her training plan, but it might be something that her team and her should think about.

After Maria came back after her shoulder injury, she said she was 100%. A new serve, a win in Tokyo, and confidence building. Any enthusiasm was short lived, however. Except for a win in Memphis (very weak field), she has fallen way short in her comeback bid. Although she is still only 22, the women's field has strengthened, her confidence is shaken, and the demands of her off field activities is adding to her fall down the ratings chart. Until the Indian Wells tournament, Maria looked like a tennis runway model on the court, rather than a serious tennis player. At this point, I believe it will be a real struggle to climb back up to the top 5 in the world, let alone the top 10. As you said, she needs some serious coaching and court time.

Maybe a break is what she needs. After uncharacteristic losses to Kirilenko and Zheng, her confidence must be pretty low. Yes, she won Memphis and, yes, she says that gave her a boost, but she knows she only had to defeat Arvidsson in the final... She expected to win. I don't think she EXPECTS to beat tougher players anymore. Let's hope she sorts the elbow out and comes back to competition with (another) fresh mind after a break. Miami will miss Maria (she hasn't played since 2007!), but I care more about her health than her tournaments. Get well soon, Maria! We (your fans) will be spending time in the Ma$ha forum creating stupid songs and pictures whilst you're gone!

Seems likely. How could she prevent that, though?
I'm no expert in tennis techniques and don't really know what she should or could change about her (ground-) game in order to protect her shoulder as well as her elbow (and other body parts).

Could building more muscle tone help? She's never been muscular and seems even skinnier lately and I'm afraid she'd go the JJ-2009 route if she'd gain muscle...

Crap. The LOB is blowing chunks right now except for the Syrup Queen. And well, Venus when she plays. And the blonde idiot when she's not playing Aga or JJ or Caro.

Okay, half of LOB is sucking. But they're sucking really BADLY. (No, Caro's winning did not improve my mood. Much. I mean it did some. But not enough to offset Lena's loss. Let alone Lena's loss AND finding out TOB is hurt again). I'm rambling.

Lovely other blonde?
Lousy other blonde?
Lazy other blonde?
Lanky other blonde?
Leggy other blonde?
Lifeless other blonde?
Lisping other blonde?
Lusty other blonde?
Loserish other blonde?
Loud other blonde?
Luscious other blonde?
...

There was this really promising young Japanese player in the ATP not so long ago. He bruised his elbow then eventually got it fractured and has been out for more than a year now. Coincidentally, he was also a product of the great Nick Bollitierri.

That elbow needs rest. Playing Miami was not going to help her anyway.
She needs rest, then some serious practice sessions

She needs rest from what ? Signing autographs ?
I have a feeling her injury is not that serious as she presents it. Just play God damn it

I think Masha needs to stop with the powerhitting tennis, her body obviously can't handle this anymore.
Anytime she plays with a lot more angles(not even with such a high power) and stops with the straigth ahead hardhitting, her tennis is great. Is her coach stupid en doesn't see that?

LOL:lol:She indeed creates some awesome angles thanks to her shotmaking ability, but without power game she isn't the same player...and you can tell her opponents feel when Maria is vulnerable and start attacking weak points of her game like a pack of hungry hyenas - she is simply not a pusher, that's not her game and not her nature.

SuzieQ
Mar 18th, 2010, 07:26 PM
Since when are you being a pusher when you not hitting the bal hard straight ahead?
She needs to stop the brainless hardhitting, and think more about the angles :) But hey, maybe I'm wrong and she can't do that anymore
Or maybe she can keep the straight ahead hitting, so her opponents can create the angles and outplay her, hell yeah, great ballbasher :dance::dance:

Of course she can hit angles, that no question.
But how exactly do you imagine her game to look like if she's not hitting the ball hard and flat? Keep in mind that her serve is more of a liability than a weappon these day.
So:

Should she play like JJ? - Sorry, but she's lacking the movement to have such a playing style.
Should she play like Agi? - Sorry, but she lacks the variety to play like that.
Should she play like Caro? - Sorry, but she would probably fall asleep NEVER be patient enough.
Should she play like one of the Clay goats? - Sorry, but :spit:

Thing is, it's really easy to lose patience and to be unsympathetic when a player has a series of injuries. But it is what it is - and I like the fact that despite the fact that she' probably frustrated as hell and wants to play that she's NOT going to play on injury and further jeopardise her health.

If she went to Miami and ended up with a fracture then her fans would be even more upset/despondent/angry etc. Patience.

even if it means a year and time to work on serving and volleying more;it will make things a lot easier for her and it will be easier on her body:shrug:

Yes, because everyone knows that a bruised elbow bone is something completely imaginary.

No, I think she's having more confidence/mental problems than physical. She needs one good tournament to boost her self-esteem back up where it was between 2004-early 2008.

If she's injured, she's injured. Her confidence issues have nothing to do with a physical injury. She probably would've played had she not had an injury, despite her low self-esteem.

Mentally, there is an issue. But it's definitely not all between the ears. She is too driven to not play a tournament just becuase she's low on confidence.

Maria is in love and wants to spent more time with her boyfriend plus they are co-habiting she probably want to be there when he wakes up and bring him breakfast in bed.
I dont think tennis is that important to her anymore, she is interested in other things plus there is no Yuri to push and motivate her.He was an important part of her entourage and that anchor is gone....who does she listen to Joyce....just looking at him will make Maria lose interest in tennis.
rest up pova...enjoy your boyfriend.

Agreed.

She's becoming aware that, the way things are going, she'll never contend for Slams again. You could see it in her face during the Zheng match - she looked genuinely frustrated at the shambles that her own game currently is. Given that her prospects of winning big titles right now are pretty slim, making some more €€€, mostly on endorsements, would be the only motivation to keep on playing, and considering how much €€€ she has already made, I doubt that would be enough.

I don't understand the assumption that this occurred strictly form playing tennis either. In any case I don't think Tracy and ass kissers like her care, they just want an excuse for her losses and this provides one for the rest of the year, unless she miraculously win something big of course. The good thing is at least I can enjoy Miami without having to listen to the usual nauseating :bs:

As to when? In her post-match presser she did say she felt the exact same pain during the USO. Which is what I thought as I was watching, but then I had the sound down. Just the way she was grabbing her forearm looked exactly like the injury she had during the Oudin match.
