Jelena got lucky. She wasn't the better player today!
As for Sara, it will be rude but I think she is the kind of player that - providing you're not Italian :) - you don't really care about. And from time to time she makes her best to prove us wrong. Great, dominating performance with nice variety. Sad that serve and FH are nowhere near her great tactics, footwork, and point construction.
Jelana got lucky!

That's not so bad if you consider how long the average rally was. Sometimes its not about the statistics, I felt the standard was strong. Errani did play pretty well, and Jelena grinded her way to victory.

Mar 16th, 2010, 03:33 AM
Hhhmmmm it wasn't nearly as bad as it looked, like I said in the Jelena cheering thread, Jelena is obviously not 100% confidence-wise and she does go for shots that are simply not there too often, but her shots are still there in her game, she hit ann unbelievable forehand DTL to win the second set and fought back with some great aggressive play to come back from 2-4 in the third set, it's just that....... she needs to get consistent again, like she was in 2008, when she was at her very best and was a factor in women's tennis! Even last summer she was getting it back, it's still all there, keep it up Jelena:yeah:!!

Strange match in terms of the number of breaks and the unpredictable momentum shifts. At least JJ fought for this win. She hit winners, and had some really good points but a boat-load of consecutive errors too. (Usually JJ is all about controlling the errors to a bare minimum. Most of the time Errani seemed to be in control of the rallies but she really collapsed towards the end there, though I suppose it was a bit of a marathon.

5 missed set point opportunities in the 2nd set! :help:

But Errani's brain exploded at a really convenient time in the 3rd set.

A win is a win. And Jeca played better than she did in Dubai. So she should only take positives out of the match.

I dunno, they both played well at moments, but also had patches of horriible play. I suppose the match was mentally tough for both of them - JJ needs to find the way out of the slump while Errani had a great chance for R4. But those are strange statistics for Jelena...or at least, for the Jelena we once knew...

Jankovic played like crap for large parts of the match and had no right to win the match, but she did. Maybe she can pull out a few more wins, but I doubt it.

Good thread title. It was a great escape by JJ. Not sure if she deserved to win. Errrani was really solid except in the end JJ wore her down. JJ played some good stuff and some awful stuff. Errani played above herself. JJ really has lost her way. I do not think this win is enough to give her confidence but it is a small start - at least she won a very tight match.

Seriously, Errani should have won this. She played well and agressive for most of the match and dominated JJ who was clueless on a lot of points. Each time I tought Jelena was raising her game after she broke Errani easily, she gave away her service game (and the tie-break wasting like 5 sp ina row :o).There was some good points and drama but overall it was kinda painfull to watch JJ playing like that.

The real positive thing is that she kept fighting and found a way even being down 2-4 0-40 in the 3rd.

I thoroughly enoyed the swings in this match. The most disturbing part was the size of the crowd viewing the match. After all the Nadal match had 16,000 fans watching, while the Jankovic match had barely 1,500 in the stands. I saw a ton of empty seats for the Clisters vs Klaybanova match. The men draw all the fans except when Sharapova plays, but Sharapova is out of the tournament. We are talking court 1 here.

Hugely entertaining match and Errani especially was a joy to watch. She played the whole match with a wonderful gritty spirit and I loved the way she stroked the ball too. Her groundies have so much spin on them they must be so tough for the opponent to deal with and I love her touch, she hit some amazing volleys and dropshots. Shame that in the end she just wasn't quite strong enough mentally.

Jelena was put on the defence for most of the match and at it looked like it might be her undoing but at times her defence was unbelievably good and won her several points she appeared to have no chance to win. And whenever the momentum shifted in her favour she seized her chances to take the initiative in the points.

Respect to both players. I enjoyed that. :yeah:
