Date-Krumm beat Anna easliy in January

Mar 22nd, 2010, 07:31 PM
You can do this Anna! Krumm is nearly twice her age, need to make her run around in the hot sun. Anna was breaking Radwanska's serve well in IW, so if she work on her serve she will improve. :wavey:

I think Anna has been playing better lately than in January, but maybe that momentum got broken due to her ankle. :awww:
Anyway, good luck Anna. :hearts:

Sounds like a good idea, but Kimiko is super fit. Fitter than most of the tour, and probably just as fit as Anna, even taking into account her age. Running her around in the sun, by itself, won't be enough to defeat her. Anna needs to bring her A game. On the other hand if it was Marion that strategy might be ideal. I don't think Anna's serve can suddenly become really solid in a week or two, so she will need to break Kimiko quite a lot to have a chance. Expect a break fest- whoever manages to hold more will win. Holds will probably be as big as breaks. Obviously a win with Nadia waiting in the wings would be great, but this is not an easy first round. Hopefully Anna comes prepared, and is healthy enough for a tough battle.

The words "broken" and "ankle" are too close here for my liking .

Having said that, I think you're right, it has been clear that Anna's form is becoming better, but she definitely needs an injury free patch.

This is where Anna's game has been for 2 years. She just does not play good tennis.

Its a rollercoaster match and you just never know how its going to turn out. She is playing decent tennis, but cant knock them out. Its disappointing because she was in control so much and a couple of bad points decide the match.

Very close match it seems. Many break point chances for both players. Anna needs to focus more on taking those important opportunities. But I don't see Miami as the sort of tournament where she will be able to build confidence. Her game is not at a level right now where she could go on a run of wins against the level of opposition here.

So close  .

6-3 :):):) I think Anna is the better player so far and she deserve to win this. Just keep grinding her under the sun. :) I dont care if its 3 hrs, but she had 4-0 and should win this.

She had 4-0 in the first set then lost it  :o. But as my dad says, tennis is about finishing. I see she got all the way back to on serve in the third before giving away an easy last game, DFs when under the pressure.

Indeed  . Your posts always make me smile- that smiley is adorable by the way. Took me a while to figure out that if I quote you the darker quote background makes the pink writing unreadable, so I have to just cut and paste instead. If tennis worked that way for Anna it would probably help her, then every point would be worth the same amount and there wouldn't be big points for Anna to lose... I guess Anna is unlucky that tennis is a game where there are big points that are worth more than others. To me that is part of the beauty of the game, but it is also why it is so hard mentally to play it.

Im really disappointed Howard, she so could have won it and won a few matches here. She seems so fragile, I just hope she is not too despondent  and she can stay motivated because she is improving. The clay courts should be better for her service games because her groundstrokes seem to be working better at the moment.

Yeah, it does seem that Anna is playing a bit better, I remember at the start of the year in Auckland she lost to Kimiko 6-1 6-2 (what was that?). Really seems like she could have won, obviously it was very close but she isn't good at winning close matches at the moment. Following the score live and seeing the 4-0 disappear must have been tough.

I wonder whether the clay will suit her this year. She traditionally likes fast surfaces where she can use the pace, but she can play her placement game on anything- had a really good match against Venus in Rome on clay last year. But I don't think clay will be the solution to her serving problems really... Serving is a double edged sword, your opponent knows approximately where you have to hit the ball, but in exchange you can put the toss in just the right place, you can hit it anywhere in that area, you can hit it really hard, and you have two goes at it. For good servers this is more than enough compensation for the relatively small target area. Good servers are in charge after they serve. Good servers think the box is big and they stretch their opponent from one corner to another. But for weaker servers- most of the WTA- it is not enough compensation. They can't do enough with the serve to make up for the fact that the opponent knows the landing area. They find the target area small and difficult to aim for. Weaker servers find that the opponent is in charge after they serve, or maybe the situation is neutral.

This is actually very common on the WTA, and it's probably the normal situation for Anna these days, the point is basically even once it starts, but the server has the extra problem of doublefaults (and not enough winning serves to make up for it). The clay might help Anna get the points into extended rallies, but I don't think it will directly help her serve. But longer rallies might help her, I'm not sure.

Anna is actually not too bad a server, although her wide take back is a bit odd, but her tendency to doublefault under pressure recently has been alarming.

You're right Chakbelle, she needs to be positive and think positively. One of Anna's biggest problems is when she gets full of negative energy on the tennis court. So she needs to take some positives from the match and then move on and prepare for the coming tournaments.

Unnecessary loss. A 1st Round loss is always bad.

Fire in her eyes, motivated, fighting and great tennis!;)
