View Full Version : Ask about players I've seen!

I've practically watched EVERY matches so far, so please ask my impressions of particular players

you're interested. I'm a novice so don't even know the proper tennis terms, but I'll try my best.

I'm planning to stay a few more days.

So far I was MOST impressed with Petra Martic, what a unique style and talent :worship:

She doesn't hurry to make a shot and can fake a shot in mid-motion and THEN send the ball

to the opposite direction of the opponent's movement :hearts: Her body seems to 'extend' when

she tries to fake it :)

Maybe you can also say something about Karolina Sprem?

Jelena Dokic? :help:

Sorry, just came back and ate dinner  Couldn't stand the cold and hunger so left before the last doubles matches.

Dokic match I saw from way up high, at Loge seat.

It was pretty one-sided, not that she got hit by many winners, just that she wasn't consistent enough.

Way too many UEs, I think. Sorry the explanation is a brief one, that's the limit of my expertise

fantic
Mar 13th, 2010, 05:50 AM
Can you watch Wozniak please?

You asked too late! I've already left and I had half a mind to watch it, but just couldn't get the time to...sorry

fantic
Mar 13th, 2010, 05:53 AM
Have you seen Ajla Tomljanovic, what is her style of play?

Maybe you can also say something about Karolina Sprem?

Thanks!

Yes, I've seen both. Sprem seems in good condition, I saw the first match. Can move well, shots are good..

Tomljanovic, just saw the 1st set, leaving before 6-5 or something against Martic.

Not especially powerful, just can keep the ball in play, can move well (that means she can also defend decently),

slice is good...Martic unlike against Pivovarova just couldn't find her rhythm..

Did you watch Kirilenko today?

fantic
Mar 13th, 2010, 05:58 AM
I had a really good first impression of Martic when I saw her at the Paris Indoors last month :yeah:

Have you seen Benesova? :)

Yes, I saw Benesova both singles and doubles, not the whole match just bits.

She left a strong impression on me.

She's sexy as hell :hearts:

against Govortsova...G was just more consistent, that's all I can say. B just couldn't pierce G's defense..

Still I heard she won the doubles match. :)

fantic
Mar 13th, 2010, 06:01 AM
Tsvetana Pironkova please

saw only Q 1st game, and only a bit, but she pretty much seemed to dominate the opponent.

Quite a lot of winners, that's what I glimpsed. I was actually quite impressed with Amanmuradova,

I first thought she was a man -_-;; Seemed to play like a man too, pretty decisively defeated Mayr..

so was quite surprised when I saw the result of Pironkova and A's match, didn't watch that one.

fantic
Mar 13th, 2010, 06:06 AM
Did you watch Kirilenko today?

Yes!! THAT's the reason why I didn't watch Li-Baltacha match :sobbing:

Kiri is pretty much my favorite player so I even sacrificed much of Masha match, especially the whole

1st set.

I wasn't that impressed with Razzano against Barrois, she didn't seem that aggressive in that game..

so was pretty surprised that R was aggressive as hell  R and K just kept an aggressive rally, quite

a sight. K just edged out because she was relatively a BIT more consistent. Serve wasn't too stable, she

committed some DFs.

fantic
Mar 13th, 2010, 06:11 AM
Polona Hercog, please. :)

saw her games against Olaru and Bartoli.

Hercog, despite her size, isn't a particularly aggressive player.

But she seems to play pretty smooth.

And her slice and dropshot is just...a natural :worship:

Especially dropshot, she doesn't seem to use much of a pre-motion, so

it's pretty hard to react to it. Bartoli was hit by that quite a few times, she couldn't

even move a step

But Bartoli was the more aggressive one, and hell, quite accurate too, sending the ball

repetitively to the corner..she pretty much pressured Hercog, and H tried to slow the tempo

by utilising slices, but often the ball got caught in the net.

She's pretty fiery too, especially against B after she made an UE sent the ball far away -home run!- in

anger

craybas, king, mattek-sands, Oudin? :D

sorry, I missed much of those players, only saw bit of King/ McHale match.

I was interested in McHale, she's a good player, her form is nice and consistent,

but King was clearly more experienced and powerful than M. M just couldn't keep up

with King's game. And those player's matches were held at main stadium, AND since

I can't get a good seat - too expensive- I shied away from their matches..sorry.

(King/McHale was stadium 2 or something, general admission price)

I saw a bii~~t of Lisicki and Craybas match, when I glimpsed Lisicki was clearly the

better one, and I found it odd that the match was ended suddenly...now I see that L was

injured, poor girl.

Hi!! Did you see any of Akgul's matches? If you did, I'd love to hear about it!! :D

commented about Akgul on the Pironkova reply.

Just saw some of A's doubles game, she obviously utilizes her size  , was pretty good at net play..

(not top notch, but pretty decent)

fantic
Mar 13th, 2010, 06:21 AM
Did you see the Cirstea-Kanepi match?

saw only bit of it, Cirstea was initially struggling against K but later on caught up, making

some spectacular winners, driving the ball to the corner..

fantic
Mar 13th, 2010, 06:25 AM
agnieszka radwanska

saw her doubles match, she was good enough. Not especially aggressive but could keep the ball

in court..some nice moves at the net too.

and saw a bit of singles against Chaky? R was just more consistent that C. Actually C aimed more

at the line  but she wasn't consistent enough, when on she was pretty good...to no avail, she tried

to chase A's ball and sprained? her ankle. She tried to play but just couldn't after some try.

Sevastova and Kvitova, if you can find time.

you asked too late! and I actually could not find the time, sorry

just saw a glimpse of S and Vives match, when I was watching S was playing better, just was

more consistent than Vives..

Kvitova actually I was interested...to find out that the match was already over  it must have

been decisive, to end that early..and I think I saw her practice, and she fell - gasp- she seemed to

hurt her ankle but shrugged off...actually it might be Kleybanova, hard to tell  (as I said I'm a

novice, just enjoying the matches)

fantic
Mar 13th, 2010, 02:03 PM
maybe my explanations aren't good enough

I also have some photos (not much close-up though) but dunno how to reduce size to fit here..I don't want to sacrifice the actual image size, so...(I'm using Mac, dunno much about this too, like how to do it)

Or maybe you guys could be my facebook friends then you can see the photos, I see size (it's like 1.5 MB each pics, by my dica) doesn't matter there..

Thank you for your report  How do you rate Kiri's chances at beating Wozniacki from what you saw?

fantic
Mar 13th, 2010, 03:07 PM
well I've seen Wozzie? practice & play doubles, she was a decent net player(didn't see from the 2nd set so didn't know they lost )..

can't really tell, but Kiri was pretty consistent against Razzano, in exchanging fast rallies..she doesn't exactly aim for the line, but the shots are generally okay, I guess...just should watch those DFs  so who knows, hope Kiri makes it ;)

and Edinboro you should paint red for Bondarenko..:(

I watched the match against Peng (B was so sexy in sweatpants? while practicing!), and she just couldn't keep up with Peng.

Not that Peng was the better shotmaker, all Peng had to do was return the ball and B, who was more aggressive, make UEs :help:

jankovic? please.

with Pleasure, since I made a smart move by purchasing an EVENING session for $20, thus could see the later
matches from Martic vs Jankovic

Jankovic was too solid for Martic. Rarely made UEs, compared to M. Of course more powerful, too.

But Martic made some spectacular plays, so she made it to a tiebreak at the 2nd set. Her SERVE
could

hurt J too, nice placement. Not only does she have drop shots. :) Satisfactory result for both players, I guess.

Hantuchova vs Vinci;

Vinci's slice or dropshots were good..could even make it on the high ball from her backhand side..H just

couldn't pierce through V's defense..

Same goes for the Ivanovic vs Sevastova match.

Ana's shot were either TOO LOW or too wide..S's defense was too solid for her..

Even though Ana was vocally supported by some Indian? fans, chanting 'Go Ana!' from time to time

Ana did try to go to the net time to time, it was pretty effective, methink.. Anywy her 'signature'?

fake and down the line forehand drive is beaut :hearts:

fantic
Mar 14th, 2010, 05:16 PM
I think defense is the trend in this tourney. Offensive players, if they are not consistent, usually loses by committing UEs.

Molik is also a defensive player, using her slices predominantly in play..

Masha's drives is a killer so she could survive, Demented and Jankovic are also good defenders TOO, so..

Do you saw Radwanska/Kirilenko - Dushevina/Rodionova? :)

fantic
Mar 15th, 2010, 08:23 AM
Radwanska ; Dulko

D wasn't too impressive today. R being more consistent had no

problem dispatching her..

Rezai ; Schiavone

saw the 2nd set. I knew R was a power player, but didn't know she

could hurt S so hard  Made quite a bit of winners. Player of

the day, I guess..

Molik ; Baltacha

M was just a better player, Had no problem defending B's shots..

Bartoli ; Craybas

If they did rally, C was usually the one who made UEs. C just

couldn't catch up with B's play..B was more powerful, too..

Dementieva ; Flipkens

Didn't really see this match much due to doubles..D was as usual,

I guess..

Dulko/Pennetta vs Vives/Sanchez

Saw Sanchez for the 1st time. Big but not a power player, but a

very good net player...deft touch, incredible reflex, could dominate

the net..pretty impressive...she was the decisive factor for the win.

Actually D/P tried to attack the sideline and it WAS pretty

effective...but Sanchez blocked one attempt at the decisive minute..

M-S/ Yan vs Garbin/Jankovic

Both players were good at net, made some spectacular plays..

Benesova/Strycova vs Kleybanova/Schiavone

The former team surprisingly did well, but it didn't effect the outcome.

I did not shiver in the dark to watch Kiri getting blanked in the 1st set :o

Kiri's shot couldn't hurt Wozzie at ALL, unless when aimed at the line..

Dunno, Kiri's shot seemed light, and Wozzie's heavy, to me. Kiri clearly seemed

to struggle with Wozzie's shots...and when they kept rallying Wozzie was usually the

one to take initiative, sending the ball deep with her back-hand..

After watching Kiri trail 0-2 in the 2nd set quit the stadium to eat a LATE dinner..:(

Thanks for your reports.

I'm curious to know more about the Rezai-Schiavone match. From the livescore, it seemed like both players were protecting their serves pretty well--no breaks at all in set 1, two each in set 2, and just Aravane's break in the third. Which is pretty amazing for a WTA match which had 36 games in it. Especially in a place as windy as Indian Wells.

Overall, what was your impression of this match quality-wise?

fantic
Mar 15th, 2010, 05:30 PM
Petrova ; Peng

Peng's backhand was quite sharp, NICE returns, shots had angles..defeating Bondarenko was not a fluke..
but generally couldn't really compete with Petrova's shots.

as for 'I Heart Mimi' , I can't really guarantee the quality 'cause I'm a novice at pro game, but I think it was okay.

Not MUCH UEs, I think, there were quite a lot of rallies....Schiavone's defense was good, but Rezai was just amazing

yesterday. Attack, attack, attack!! Overall S was on the defensive, and Rezai's aggressiveness prevailed. One of the

best matches so far. (didn't watch the most of the 1st set, and the later 3rd set)

ok. ONE WORD; MJMS!!!!!!!!!!! :worship:

I'M NOT GONNA REPORT OTHER MATCHES, TO HELL WITH THEM, THIS MATCH

WAS JUST :worship:

MJMS HAD A FEW WEAPONS AGAINST VIKA;

1. SERVE. GREAT PLACEMENT! PUT REAL PRESSURE ON VIKA.

2. SHE COULD FOLLOW VIKA'S SHOTS!

3. MOREOVER, SHE COULD ACTUALLY RETURN VIKA'S SHOTS!

4. AND THE ULTIMATE WEAPON, SLICE AND DROPSHOT!!! PERFECTION!! :worship:

SHE EMPLOYED THE CLASSICAL? SERVE AND VOLLEY TACTIC AND IT PAID OFF IN THE

END.

VIKA DIDN'T PLAY BAD.

MJMS JUST PLAYED AMAZING TODAY :hearts:

I have just read these reports and I have got to say, I love everything about them. You really write from the heart. And you are very perceptive and, yeah, I suppose I feel a great empathy with you because it seems obvious that we appreciate the same things in a tennis match.

Like you I love a good dropshot and adore it when a player uses slice effectively. I'm glad you like MJMS. She really does play a different kind of tennis to anyone else on the tour. She is so full of tricks and guile and her volleying and touchshots are out of this world. And Martic too is a wonderfully resouceful player again with a fabulous slice, great improvisational skills and while she isn't a powerful girl she is still a great shotmaker. And finally anyway who says Benesova is "sexy as hell" clearly has magnificent taste.

I like your posts a lot, Fantic, and hope you will keep posting lots more. All the best. :yeah:

Mar 16th, 2010, 05:05 PM
haha thanks, here's the rest of the report for yesterday

Stosur vs PAV

Saw PAV for the first time, heard good things of her (GM 1991 thread), and heard she upset
Dani :bigcry: recently so forgone K Peschke (CZE) / K Srebotnik (SLO) d N Grandin (RSA) / A Spears (USA) 61 62
and solely concentrated 100% on this match.

The waited upset didn't happen :o
I wasn't too impressed with her, maybe it was her off day.
Stosur had no problem against her, utilizing service, drives, slices..nice game on Stosur's part

Peer vs Pennetta

Peer was on the offensive, and she could parry with Pennetta!
Reasonably good on rallies, and Pennetta struggled with her game.
Much UEs. Didn't see the final game of 2nd set to watch Vera

Vera vs Sevastova

Vera was more consistent.

CSN vs Szavay

CSN was the better player, but S hurt her with her tactics, for example using drop shots effectively occassionally (since CSN was SO MUCH FURTHER from the baseline)
Szavay grimaced from time to time, touching her right shoulder..in pain?
Anyway this game saw a LOT of rallies.

Janko vs Errani

Gosh, Errani was GOOD. Fantastic rallies on both sides, Janko showing some amazing last minute winners at the end of 2nd set. Also did not see much to watch MJMS Vika match

Saw a bit of Black/Huber vs Amanmuradova/Kustova match, and the former was clearly better, this time A's size was a bit useless..

fantic
Mar 16th, 2010, 05:09 PM
Benesova/Strycova vs Kleybanova/Schiavone

The former team surprisingly did well, but it didn't effect the outcome.

Wait, Benesova team WON?

I Benesova (CZE) / B Zahlavova Strycova (CZE) d [5] A Kleybanova (RUS) / F Schiavone (ITA) 57 75 10-1

I totally forgot Benesova match after belatedly concentrating on Demented match,

so didn't know the final outcome...Way to go Iveta & Strycova!! :hearts:

fantic
Mar 17th, 2010, 04:08 AM
Rezai vs Demented

Saw the 1st 3 games. Rezai made some DFs, and I think it affected the outcome.
I really should concentrate on D's match tomorrow if possible

Bartoli vs Radwanska

Exciting match. Quite a lot of rallies. If B made a nice serve, R made it too.
If B executed a wonderful drop shot, R did it too.
R also could hit hard when she chose to. Overall R was the more consistent one.

Wozzie, Rad, these kind of players...I think they are the 'response' to the like of Sharapova.
Obviously it's VERY difficult to win points against these players who has SOLID defense..you either have to rely on big serve, or should be able to aim lines..or you can choose to rally against them and somehow pull it off..
all VERY difficult...if a response to THEM (it's like evolutionary theory ) appears, say like Sharpova 2.0, she'll be hailed as a savior of women's tennis by TF's mainstream

By the way, nice to see them kiss each other after the match :hearts:

Molik vs Zheng

Just glimpsed some pts from the top row of stadium 2 (which afford a
full view of court 4 and 5, so can watch 3 matches!), when I was watching
Molik's defense was working against Zheng..

Stosur vs Z

Who was the top 10 player of the two? DEFINITELY Stosur.
Z just couldn't respond to S's serve..there wasn't even long rallies, compared to Bartoli ; Aga match.
Stosur quite easily took the initiative with her big serve and the follow up volleys, etc. BEST CONDITION.
Z moreover pitifully sent the ball to the middle when they DID rally, it was STOSUR who aimed at the corner..pathetic :help:
Vera IS my favorite player, but today she just did NOT deserve top 10 at ALL.

K Peschke (CZE) / K Srebotnik (SLO) d M Kirilenko (RUS) / A Radwanska

The former are a VERY good doubles team. The latter had their chances, but blew it.

[28] M Martinez Sanchez (ESP) d [13] Y Wickmayer (BEL) 64 62

More or less the same with the Vika match. MJMS's serve was fantastic, her return also.
Wickie is a solid player, she has nice serve and good movement, but MJMS's return was somewhat crazy  The pressure became too much for W, who committed UEs at crucial moments.
I recorded every point up to the middle of the 2nd set.

and sadly fantastic plays by both players happened much AFTER my dica's battery went out :bigcry:

I'll upload some fantastic moments on my facebook anyway..but am dog tired now

You and I have one more thing in common.

Monica Niculescu seems to be your favorite player (from the SIZE of her

name on your sig. )

I'm originally a NCAA fan, a USC fan (because it was near my

boardinghouse some 5~6 years ago), who saw Monica's older sister

double last year with Amanda Fink! Of course I was there! )

And I love slice and dropshot specialists at NCAA, that's why I appreciate

MJMS all the more :) I've never seen a player who rushes to the net and

employs dropshots THAT often  ( And touchshot? what is that? She

used forehand slice? predominantly against Vika and Yanina when

returning their serve..I'm so deficient in tennis terms )

I know this is very late, but would you be able to share your thoughts on Pivovarova? :)

I'm too tired to type her full name!! any suggestions? like Elena?

and Pivovarova lost to Martic. I recorded some moments of that game, too. Ummm...what can I say? It was

easier match for Martic than the next one. Martic's technique was too much for her..sorry for not being much

of a help.

You and I have one more thing in common.

Monica Niculescu seems to be your favorite player (from the SIZE of her

name on your sig. )

I'm originally a NCAA fan, a USC fan (because it was near my

boardinghouse some 5~6 years ago), who saw Monica's older sister

Gabriela play at singles no. 4 and doubles no. 1 :) (She won the Pac10

double last year with Amanda Fink! Of course I was there! )

I sometimes use the term touchshot to mean a shot that is hit with a gentle touch of the racket rather than one that is hit with full on power. Basically I mean any finesse shot.

And very cool that you have been supporting Gabriela Niculescu too. :bounce:

One more thing about Dementieva.

I heard she has tortured fans AND her mother for a long time  that's one of the reason I called her that, doing crazy things
on court to blow the GS opportunity..but I have no ill will against her, I GENUINELY WANT HER TO GET GS THIS YEAR, EXCEPT WIMBY
(THAT'S FOR JUJU! )
I actually rooted her against Oudin at USO, I rooted all Russian players against her who ALL lost  Oudin is a good player, I
saw her play against South and Dani at LA Championship (Dani just destroyed Oudin in the 3rd set with her drop shots and lobs. :hearts:
THAT's why I love Dani, such skills! )

[5] A Radwanska (POL) d [4] E Dementieva (RUS) 64 63

Just saw the 1st 3 games on the screen before heading to stadium 3 to watch doubles.

Radwanska was making UEs, so I thought D had a chance

[3] N Petrova (RUS) / S Stosur (AUS) d I Benesova (CZE) / B Zahlavova Strycova (CZE) 26 62 10-7

Both Benesova and Z. Strycova had nice serves, and capitalized on it. Moreover Strycova was quite a good net player.

[6] B Mattek-Sands (USA) / Z Yan (CHN) d [2] N Llagostera Vives (ESP) / M Martinez Sanchez (ESP) 76(3) 16 10-5

Mattek-Sands was aggressive, and Yan was very good. Nice shot selection, good play at the net.

[2] C Wozniacki (DEN) d [18] J Zheng (CHN) 64 46 61

Both players played their heart out. Kudos to both players.

Zheng is really a good player. Can move well, and against W was pretty aggressive, tried to attack early as much as

possible, even aiming at W's serve, scoring quite a lot of return aces. Her angles usually from the backhand was

pretty sharp, too. Had a lot of winners.

But W could return Z's sharp attack, and her loopy backhand, placing the ball at Z's feet, sending the ball to the opposite direction of Z's movement, proved to be effective, inducing Z's UEs.
Radwanska - Wozzie match, as predicted. They also kissed each other good bye. :) So impressed by Z's game, had to add her to my sig. :)

Today all of the matches are held at the Main Stadium so no more reason to stay here. Already broke

Thx for reading the reports!
