Radwanska sisters' American peregrinations are starting in Indian Wells, a Premier Mandatory tournament. Ula is resting this one out (get better soon Urszula!) and we have just found out Agnieszka's draw.
Seeded 5, she gets first round bye, and in the second faces the winner of Keothavong vs Chakvetadze. So far so not too bad.
Third round could be very interesting, as her predicted opponent, Gisela Dulko, will need to overcome the winner of Henin vs Rybarikova to get there. I wonder...
Round four is likely to feature Bartoli or Lisicki.
Then perhaps Dementieva.
Then...
Well, what do you think?

I am not sure if I like the draw, but it is one that Agnieszka has to deal with if she wants to grow up. I don't think Agnieszka likes to play Anna and then Justine will probably make her nervous. I say if she passes these two she wins the entire thing . Btw... sitting in a hotel in LA right now. I wish I had the time for a trip to IW.

Hey AndreConrad, it's just two and a half hours away by car, according to the IW website
Treat yourself! And say hello to Agnieszka if you make it there. I'm going to wait till Wimbledon.
Regarding the draw, I think you're right. Her confidence is going to be put to a test, so I hope she does herself justice.
Bon chance, Agnieszka!

Yeah, meeting on top of a meeting so no time to do the drive. Next year I am taking time off for this and USO.

this draw sucks big time.
Agnieszka has pretty tought first two matches.

Then again it would be so amazing if she could actually beat Justine in 3rd round ;)

gaja kesari
Mar 9th, 2010, 01:02 PM
I agree that Agnieszka was unlucky in this draw, as this is Justine's last unranked (and unseeded) tournament. Yet, she has nothing to lose.
Incidentally, I don't think she has anything to prove either.

Justine Henin is 10-2 this year, AFAIR so far she's only lost to Kim Clijsters and Serena. Most would agree that she's the favourite in a match against Agnieszka. I would hope that this takes some pressure of Aga and allows her to play freely, without the weight of expectation. We'll see.

Agata.
Mar 9th, 2010, 02:04 PM
This would be such a good draw to reach the final if there was no possible 3rd round against Henin :(
Looking at the bright side of it in order not to sound pessimistic, Justine made her comeback not that long ago, her form may (but ofc doesn't have to) fluctuate, so it may be a good chance to get a win over her. Still, ofc I'd prefer not to have her in Agnieszka's draw.
But anyway, first of all Agnieszka needs to beat Keothavong or Chakvetadze and it doesn't have to be an easy match.

I totally agree, the one she made was USO with Masha few years ago, now its high time for another one!!
Still im not really concinced if aga is capable now to play such game (the wrist injury), but i hope she will be at the end of the season :)

It is not a question if it is going to happen (the break through for Agnieszka). The real question is when it is going to happen.

O kontuzji Anny
She twisted her ankle. She called for the trainer and asked for some treatment. After trying so hard to feel her foot and be a good sport to finish the match, She was forced to retire. Knowing her , it's not like her to just quit and give up on matches just like that. But this time it was a different story She was in pain. And to avoid further damage she opted to retire. When I talked to her I just felt every single minute of her emotions. Needless to say She felt so bad that she just told me when is this injuries or misfortune going to end. But She's a fighter and Never believes in giving up. The doctor adviced her to rest up for a good 7 to 10 days. Let's All hope and pray for her speedy recovery. You will get to read her new diary for the coming days. Thank you guys for taking a minute of your time to read my so called Letter or thoughts .

TennisTV are showing Aga v. Bartoli as their first match, so let's hope Eurosport do the same (AFAIK they usually do).
Unfortunately, Dementieva v. Rezai is played on Stadium 3 at the same time, so we can't take it for granted.

In any case, good luck Agnieszka! Make it a 5-0 against Marion.

By the way, what I personally loved about her match against Dulko, is that Aga concentrated 100% - she watched her opponent like a hawk. If she gives Marion the same level of attention, I cannot see her lose this match.

I cannot understand why someone deleted copied by me text from "L'Equipe"
about yesterday's battle. This legendary, very high esteemed French sportjpournal
presents Agnieszka as "Murray among women" and compares her play to master chess strategy

I 'll do the same crime once again for those who can read French

Fourth-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva and No. 5 seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland will also collide for a place in the semi-finals after both posted straight-sets wins over French players on Tuesday. Dementieva defeated No. 19 seed Aravane Rezai 6-3, 6-3, while Radwanska cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 11 Marion Bartoli.

Dementieva, who trails Radwanska 2-3 in the lifetime series, said about the strategy for her upcoming match: “I need really to create something. I need to go for the winner. It's not like I'm going on the court and I'm patient, because there's nothing to waiting for. She doesn't make any mistakes. She moves well. It's going to be up to me, if I will be able to step forward, take advantage of the short ball, and be aggressive the whole match.”

What do you mean, Queen of SF? I bloody hope she's not stopping there this time :)
A day of rest tomorrow, and who knows where she'll get :)

Congratulations on the win against Elena. There were some lovely exchanges during the match, even if neither player played at the top of her game. Agnieszka looked a bit more passive today, I wonder if the heat was getting to her. Still, Elena duly helped her cause with tonnes of errors, some of them unforced. :) In any case, I am glad it got wrapped up relatively quickly.

Now let's see who she's going to play in the semis. If it's Caro, there'll be a chance of another top ten win, my dears

INDIAN WELLS, CA, USA - How hard is it to play against one of your best friends? According to Caroline Wozniacki and Agnieszka Radwanska... well, here it is in their own words after their quarterfinal wins at Indian Wells.

On separating friendship from competition...
Agi [:tape:]: "We went to dinner a couple of times already at this tournament. It won't make any difference in our friendship... I haven't played against her in the last two years, so it's going to be interesting."

Caroline: "You have to keep professional and see that little yellow ball and hit it inside the lines and over the net. Once you start thinking, 'Okay, it's my friend,' you lose the match. It's important not think about who's on the other side."

On the winner buying dinner...
Agi: "It's always like that. If someone wins, they buy the other one dinner, yes."

Caroline: "The winner has to, so... I hope I'm going to buy dinner."

On the dinner conversation...
Caroline: "We don't talk about tennis. There are so many other things, so we prefer just to have a totally different conversation... We have so much tennis in our daily life and practice so much, work so hard. So when we have the opportunity to just relax, it's nice to have the brain think about something else."

More on the dinner conversation...
Caroline: "Clothes, fashion, make-up, nail polish, boys... Everything!"

On what the "hot nail polish" is these days...
Caroline: "Really bright. I really like the really pink ones. Actually, I always have my nails polished. I didn't this time... maybe I should have."

On what language they use at dinner...
Agi: "Polish."
Caroline: "Polish, yeah."

On how long they have been friends...
Caroline: "I've known both of the Radwanskas equally well. All the way through juniors, since... I think we played some under 12s and under 14s together. Because we spoke the same language, it was easier to stay in contact. It was nice to have some friends on the tour."

Radwanska Keeps Up Hot Desert Form, Faces Wozniacki For Final Spot
Indian Wells, U.S.A.
by Staff, 17.03.2010

After quarter-final exits the past two years, No. 5 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland broke through to reach the semi-finals at the BNP Paribas Open with a 6-4, 6-3 win over fourth-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva on Wednesday in Indian Wells.

Radwanska grabbed the set lead as she came from 0/30 on serve at 4-4 to win the next eight points. Dementieva had her share of chances to get back in the match, with five break point chances in the second set, but Radwanska denied her four times while winning two of her three chances.

“I didn't play the way I should be to beat her,” said Dementieva, who had 54 unforced errors to Radwanska’s 20. “I was playing actually her game the way she feels pretty comfortable with the long rallies. I feel I was not aggressive with my footwork, was not aggressive with my shots today, so just way too many mistakes from me. And she was playing as usual. She was pretty solid on the baseline, no mistakes.”

Radwanska has been largely unchallenged en route to the semi-finals, posting straight-sets wins in her four matches during the 2010 BNP Paribas Open.

“I'm very happy that I am in this condition always playing two sets, especially I'm always first in the day,” said Radwanska. “Of course, it's always better to win in two sets, but it's always hard, especially here. It's tough, especially against Dementieva, who is also very tough to play against. I'm just happy about my performance this week.”

The 28-year-old Dementieva was looking to reach the semi-finals for the fourth time in Indian Wells. She had finished runner-up to countryman Maria Sharapova in 2006.

Second seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark was extended to a third set for a third time this tournament before prevailing against China’s Zheng Jie 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in two hours and 18 minutes. She fought off all four break points faced on serve in the final set, while taking advantage of three of her five chances.

Wozniacki, who earned her first win in three matches against the 18th-seeded Zheng, said: “It was a long match. It was really tough. She played really well and got a lot of balls back that I thought I had won already. I'm really pleased about my game today.”

The 19 year old advances to the semi-finals for the first time in four event appearances, and said about playing Radwanska next: “She's a good player. She's getting a lot of balls back. She's thinking. She's smart on the court. But she's a good friend. Tomorrow I think we're just going to relax, have fun, and then we have to see what's gonna happen the day after.”

Radwanska and Wozniacki have split their two previous meetings, and will be facing off on court for the first time since 2008.

I had been so mad that they had evening match and had some plans to get up to watch it but now I am glad I didn't. As I see, too many wasted opportunities in the second set... But well, it is a such big tournament and Aga had a great run there, so more reasons to be happy about, than to worry about this loss to Caro (it is amazing that there are so good friendships on Tour and the handshake at the net was so cute!). For sure, it's a big achievment for her and step forward, to go deeper in Top 10! On to Miami, after a great week, hopefully next one will be the same as this or even better to follow!

Sweet hug at the net.:hearts:

Caro was simply too good.
The 2-2 game in 2nd set was the best.
The match was closer than the scoreline suggests.
Caro served better than Aga.
I think the commentator said there were 8 "deuce games". And Caro won 7!
Caro won the important points.

Caroline is a bad match-up for Aga.:(
The top spin hurts Aga.:(
IMO the only surface where Aga has a chance to beat Caro is grass.

What we could see in this match is that Aga (unfortunately) lacks power.:(
Because of this I think we shouldn`t have too high expectations for Aga.
Of course a Grand Slam Semifinal/Final is not impossible but it is hard.

Overall successful tournament for Aga. IW SF is a great result.:):yeah:

The Miami draw is out now

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/SEWTATour-Archive/posting/2010/902/MDS.pdf

and on paper Agnieszka should defend her points here with ease... (first match against winner of Makarova/qualifier, then possibly Ivanovic as the first seeded opponent, then possibly Penetta or Lisicki).
Her likely quarter-final opponent is, you've guessed it, Venus Williams.
Good draw? It could be better, but certainly could be worse. The unfortunate Dementieva gets Henin in the second, again. Possibly, of course.
Best of luck, Agnieszka!

QF should be reachable and that's great.
We'll worry about Venus if both get there.

The road to a possible QF doesn't seem to be very difficult, could've been much worse, though ofc nobody who is playing in MD of such an important tournament should be underestimated.
Then, propably Venus in QF (assuming both get there), the favourite of this tournament, in this case, I certainly wouldn't call it a luck of the draw considering that Agnieszka has never beaten her before (when Venus was healthy), but one day this 'first time' may come I guess.

That is correct!... to date. I hope Agnieszka has it in her to change that. The question is when.

Agnieszka, best of luck, and don't forget to focus!
This is an important match for Ivanovic - beating an in-form Agnieszka would be quite a coup for her, just what she would need to start turning things around. Could be tough for our girl. I hope it isn't

Nowadays wins over Ivanović don't give any splendour, it's a duty. But beacuse it was in 2 sets, it was a good win. Some energy saved. And keep going in doubles. :yeah:

BTW Anna Ivanović shows one day you can be #1 and on the next day you're gone. Lets appreciate where is Aga now.

Nice win but well Ana is always a tough opponent, she is not the player from 2 years ago but I think now she is coming back slowly and she needs more time with her new coach so nice and valuable win and hopefully next wins to come and upcoming match against Venus is closer and closer :)

This assertion makes no sense. Although Agnieszka’s stats against Williams sisters are not favorable I don’t think she will always lose to them. I think she can work it out. For Caroline I would not bet today that she will win against Agnieszka if they played.
