Hi Alisa fans :wavey:

In some other forums I visit there is off-topic thread so I thought it's good to have one at Alisa's forum.Despite its short life,it's already became one of my favourite forums here :D

So we can maybe start introducing ourselves.

My name is Veronika and I'm from Spain.I've been following women's tennis since 1989 or so.I started following Alisa a couple of years ago when I saw a livestream of her in one of the indoor tournaments (Antwerp maybe? I'm not sure),she lost against Justine but you could already see how good she was and was really curious about her and her development.I've only seen her live once, but what a great experience! that was last year when she defeated Venus in Madrid :worship:

I hope more people will join the conversation and think this is a good idea. You can post about anything you want here. Also feel free to suggest a better title for this thread :p not very original,I know

Hello! :wavey:

My name is Steven and I'm from the UK and I have been following tennis since 2007 or there or thereabouts. I became a fan of Alisa after she defeated the annoying one at the Australian Open last year ;)

I saw Alisa play for the first time last month at the GDF Suez Open against Pennetta. I only stayed for the first set because I had been travelling to Paris overnight and by that time, I was absolutely exhausted and was in need of sleep but I will try and catch her at Wimbledon this year - really interested in seeing the Alisa/Fran doubles combo

Hi guys! :wavey:
My name is Nena and I'm from Serbia! I follow Alisa since AusOpen 2009. I was amazed how good she played. She had strong shoots, nice volleys and she was so persistent!

BTW, I follow tennis so long, cos my parents adored Monika Seles. :D

And I also love to visit this forum, especially cos it was my idea to give name Alisa Wonderland!

I had never heard Nena as a name,I like it ;) Monica Seles was my big fave in the 90s,I adored her like your parents. The day she was agressed I even cried

Where from Serbia and the UK are you guys from? I've never visited any of these 2 countries so far but I hope someday I will.I like to travel a lot.

Actually Nena is my nickname, cos it's easier for people to call me like that. My real name is Nevena.
I'm from Belgrade and I warmly recommend you to come in my country. I was once in Spain, in Madrid and it's so beautiful city. :inlove:
And I love to travel, so I'm using every possible moment to travel! ;)

Ivanovic :p

I live in Plymouth, which is in the south-west. It's not a particularly vibrant city but some of the surrounding countryside (Dartmoor National Park) is beautiful. :inlove: I love London as well :hearts: And even though I've never been, everyone tells me Edinburgh in Scotland is beautiful too :)

I've never been to Madrid although it's somewhere I would love to visit. :D I've been to Majorca twice, I went to Valencia two years ago and I'm almost certain I'm going to the Barcelona Ladies Open next month :bounce:

Belgrade is on my list of places to visit, Nena

I hope so! But I wasn't sure I could go until a few days ago and the flights have really gone up in price. :(

Plus it's really weird because two of the airports which fly to Barcelona are actually about 100km away from Barcelona.

I think there are three airports but the cheap airlines (Easyjet, Ryanair) generally fly to the ones which are a really long way from Barcelona. I really hope I can get a cheap-ish flight though!

Where have you guys been travelling? I also love to travel :D I'm also going to Budapest this year as well :)

I would love to travel to Uk and Serbia. To Serbia the problem is I like to travel with other people and unfortunately it's not easy to convince people to go there.

To UK,I have a cousine living there now (London) so maybe this year, maybe next one :D

Enjoy at Barcelona tournament,Steven.I was looking at the entry list the other day and there are some interesting players coming.I'll only go to Madrid,I can't go to that many tournaments so I chose Madrid over Barcelona or Marbella because more and better players are coming.
Talking about Barcelona,I saw today on tv it has snowed there, which is quite unusual.I loved Budapest (I visited it in 2004,time flies :o).

Nena,I read not long ago there's a new tournament this year in Belgrade. Are you going?

I've traveled mostly in Europe:France,Belgium,Germany,Netherlands (that was last travel,to Amsterdam last september),Prague,Budapest,Slovenia,Venice and Russia.Outside Europe I've been 3 times to USA but all of them long ago (as I have some family there). But there are still a lot more places I would like to discover!

I know that there are two tournament for men, but none for women. Ana Ivanovic is working on getting ladies tournament here. There is Gemax open (ITF; big one) and Serbian Open. If you mean Serbian open, I will go. Safin will be there as a promoter so I have to go... BTW, Marat is my favorite tennis player! :D

Hello everyone! :wavey:
I'm Jean Marie from the US (born and raised in Michigan, currently in Oklahoma for school). I've been following tennis since the 2003 US Open (when I became a Davenport fan) and I've always loved watching the sport and looking for new players to keep an eye on. I saw Alisa play Ivanovic at the Aussie Open in 2009 and just fell in love with her. I love her game and her style and her personality. There is something so endearing about her that I love.

Hi Jean Marie :wavey:

Most of my modules are quite contemporary courses. This term, I'm doing Divided Germany, Forging Modern Europe and Politics and the Economy in the Middle East and last term, I did the History of Islam, Sub-Saharan Africa since 1860 and Food & Health in the USA in the 20th century so there's a nice range :)

A bit of a random question but how would you say brainless ballbasher and pusher in French? I've always wanted to know  :p

Bероника
Mar 19th, 2010, 03:35 PM
lol no idea about pusher,as for brainless ballbasher it would be something like cogneuse écervelée/sans cerveau/sans intelligence.

How would you define "pusher"? someone who doesn't hit hard,or is there something else to its meaning? Also are these expressions usually used in english or are they from this board?

nevetssllim
Mar 19th, 2010, 03:41 PM
Thanks :) My translation for brainless ball-basher would have been 'quelqu'un qui frappe sans intelligence ;)

Yeah, I mean pusher as in the over-used word on GM ;) Would it just be pousseur/poussette?

Bероника
Mar 19th, 2010, 03:57 PM
yes, pousseur,I guess (since push = pousser) ou quelqu'un/un joueur qui pousse la balle

quelqu'un qui frappe sans intelligence is good translation too,I think

I'm now curious to know if someone follows ATP or visits men's tennis forum if these expressions are used there too or only for the girls.I don't follow much ATP except at slams,I have to admit.

I don't think brainless-ballbasher is used that much to describe men's tennis because it tends to be a favourite expression of the ATP fans who look down their noses at the WTA but I have seen it used a few times on menstennisforum to describe some players e.g. Tsonga. I think people refer to moonballers more but maybe there's a derogatory term for ATP serve-only players

I'm through with Indian Wells - couldn't care less who wins  Hopefully Peschke/Srebotnik can win the doubles :bounce: If I'm honest, I always find events like Indian Wells a bit boring because they never really live up to their billing in terms of the top seeds and I'm not a huge fan of hard-courts. I prefer clay and grass (and indoor hard like Paris Indoors because it's such a fast surface).

I've always wanted to study languages but I struggled when I was in high school with Spanish so much that I don't know if I have the brain for learning them. I really, really want to try and learn Italian but I'm so scared I won't be able to grasp it. I agree! In the UK, we start learning languages at the age of 11-12 and I think we should start earlier. I always feel really guilty because Brits are really lazy when it comes to languages. :o I can speak French quite well but I would love to learn a third.

On a similar topic, how many languages does Alisa speak? English, Russian, Italian...any others?

That's about the age we learn them here in the States too (at least I did) and we only had the choice of Spanish until high school where I only had the choice between Spanish, French, and Sign Language. I wish they offered more but I went to a really small high school.

About languages, my first language was Sign Language, then Dutch. Now I talk mostly dutch, cause I dont need sign at my college, work placement, w/ my parents and w/ my friends.. I dont have many deaf friends, basically noone..

When I was eleven I learned English, but it was mostly basic. I got the chance to learn more english when Internet came by.. ;)
Thanks to this very forum I can communicate in English, isn't it wonderful?
And when I was 14 I got German for two years.. A shitty language to learn, for me anyway.. Could be thanks to the teacher.. ;)

I've met her twice.First in 2006,Madrid YEC,then I was not a fan yet,but she was super nice with everyone, she was signing and giggling all the time and taking photos with whoever wanted. Also last year at Madrid tourney too, again all smiles and giggles.I approached her after one of the matchs she had just won so she was in good mood :p

Veronika, what did you think of Moscow in terms of safety? I was reading my Moscow travel guide and it made Moscow sound very unsafe for tourists, but then again, I get the impression travel guides have a tendency to exaggerate these things

I had also read a lot of black legends about safety in Moscow before going, but I didn't have any problem there and did not felt unsafe.I had my mp3 stolen in Madrid metro first time I was there, and nobody stole me anything and I used metro in Moscow a lot.So from my experience it was not unsafe, maybe someone who's had bad experiences there feels different.

Only the first weekend + monday (and maybe tuesday too) for Madrid tournament ;) that's when you can see all the players still there.

I was meant to be flying with Ryanair tomorrow but that has been cancelled and there wonīt be any flights until Monday at the very, very earliest and either way, we wonīt be given priority so it will probably be Wednesday until I get another flight. Here's a map of Spain - for some inexplicable reason, it almost took 11 hours :o

I saw;
First set of Gimeno-Traver vs. Monaco
Last game of Navarro vs. Cuevas
All of Chardy vs. Montanes (except the first game of the second set)
Most of the second set of Hewitt vs. Ilhan
First set of Melzer vs. Lapentti
Most of the second set of Zverev vs. Stakhovsky
The second half of the second set of Almagro vs. Greul
Bits of Robredo vs. Bolelli, Gulbis vs. Luczak and Lopez vs. Dolgopolov Jr.

I like to wander when I go to tennis events, unless one of my favourites is playing, such as Chardy which is why I watched his match in his entirety.

I really enjoyed the ATP event but in terms of viewing, I think I preferred the WTA tournament (they aren't held at the same complex). From what I gather, the ATP event is quite a prestigious social event and you got the feeling a lot of people just turned out to be seen, while the WTA event was so laid back.

The WTA event was so cool because you saw all of the players milling around and unlike the ATP event, they didn't try and separate the players from the general public. When I arrived on the first day, Meghannn Shaughnessy was in front me getting her accreditation and she was chatting to Monica Niculescu for a bit. I also saw MJMS and LDL relaxing after a workout and during the rain delay, virtually all of the players were hanging around in the lobby. Andrea Petkovic and Tatjana Malek were standing opposite me, Niculescu and Alexandra Dulgheru were sitting near me as well and Flavia Pennetta (who surprising turned up, albeit not to play), was chatting with Tax Garbin, Schiavone and Dulko for a while.

I spent most of that period trying to draw up the confidence to ask for photographs but I eventually chickened out and spent the metro ride back to my hotel lamented my lack of self esteem
