Baltacha Wins Battle of the Elenas

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/01/20/article-0-07EEB53C000005DC-25_468x329.jpg

British #1 Elena Baltacha booked her spot in the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open today, but was made to fight hard for her victory.

Baltacha started confidently against her Russian opponent, Elena Vesnina. She was serving well, hitting the lines with some fantastic winners and also showed some great defensive skills to easily wrap up the first set 6-0 in just 16 minutes.

Baltacha looked to be cruising at 6-0 4-1 up but Vesnina dug deep and began to produce some stunning tennis of her own, breaking Baltacha twice in a row to level up at 4-4. From there, both players held serve easily through to the tiebreak. Once again it was Baltacha who had the more promising start, racing out to a 3-0 lead. With a perfectly measured dropshot, Baltacha was able to set up 2 match points. However, Vesnina saved the match points with an ace and then a stunning down the line backhand return winner. Baltacha seemed riled at missing her opportunities and Vesnina seized the advantage to claim the tiebreak 8-6 and send it into a decider.

Vesnina seemed to be playing with confidence now and opened up a 2-0 lead with an immediate break. However, some gutsy play from Baltacha saw her break straight back. Baltacha continued to be aggressive and press forwards and it paid dividends in game 11 of the decider where she broke through on the Vesnina serve to lead 6-5. Baltacha was not going to waste her chances again and she served it out to love to book a spot in the last 8, where she will face #2 Yanina Wickmayer.

Elena said: "It was a good match for me overall. I played a great first set and was cruising and then my concentration slipped a little. I let her back into the match and she took full advantage. She started coming up with some great tennis so all credit to her. I was glad I was able to pull myself together in that third set and still stay aggressive and get the win in the end."

"I play Wickmayer next. I have never played her before but she is #2 so I have to be on top form if I want to stand a chance. I can't afford to let my focus slip at all like today. I feel that if I play my best tennis I have a great chance of winning. It was great to reach the final last week but I would love to go one further and win the title here in Indian Wells!"

Seeds Dominate In Indian Wells

http://72.3.178.92/articles/articlefiles/2930-2009_11_13_5.jpg

This fortnights Indian Wells tournament is one that has been dominated by the top seeds, Maria Sharapova, Kim Clijsters, Su-Wei Hsieh and Yanina Wickmayer will contest the semi finals at the grade 1 event. Wickmayer, Sharapova and Hsieh have all taken titles already this season at Kuala Lumpur, Acapulco and Kuala Lumpur respectively.

Sharapova's quarter final match was played in tough conditions, swirling winds made the match far from simple. Sharapova started strongly, seemingly ignoring the windy conditions to take the first set 61. In the second set Ivanovic made far fewer errors and capitalized on a distracted Sharapova. Clearly annoyed by a poor second set, Sharapova came out battling in the third and overpowered Ivanovic taking the final set 61.

Sharapova will take on Kim Clijsters in the semis, after the Belgian came through against Daniela Hantuchova. Clijsters dominated the first set taking it 6-0, with strong controlled tennis. Hantuchova made the second a contest but couldnt impact on Clijsters strong service games. The second set was all about holding serve, and would be decided in a tie break, which Clijsters took 7 points to 4.

Su-Wei Hsieh has been impressive this week and today she matched that with a win over Italian Flavia Pennetta. Hsieh took the first set 64 with a performance full of variety. The second set was a little closer but Penneta couldnt stay consistant and let Hsieh close it out 75.

Yanina Wickmayer and Elena Baltacha provided the most intresting quarter final match, Wickmayer came out determined and took the first set 61. Baltacha was furious after the set and left the court, she came out in the second ultra-aggresive and it paid off as she failed to drop a game. The final set was womens tennis at its best, both girls hitting line after line. Unsurprisingly it went to a tie break, and Wickmayer edged it 7 points to 3.

Top Seeds To Fight For Indian Wells Title

http://www.australianopen.com/images/pics/thumbs/t_sharapova_18_09.jpg http://www.australianopen.com/images/pics/thumbs/t_wickmayer_24_05.jpg http://www.australianopen.com/images/pics/thumbs/t_sharapova_18_04.jpg http://www.australianopen.com/images/pics/thumbs/t_wickmayer_22_01.jpg

[Indian Wells, United States] The final at the BNP Paribas open will be between the initial tournament favourites Maria Sharapova and Yanina Wickmayer. Both players came through their semi final matches in three sets, dismissing Kim Clijsters and Su-Wei Hsieh respectively.

Maria Sharapova took last weeks title in Monterrey with a win over Britians Elena Baltacha, whilst Wickmayer took a title two weeks ago in Acapulco with a win over youngster Laura Robson. With both in good form, a brilliant final is expected here in Indian Wells.

Speaking about the final both girls said they were excited and hungry for victory. Sharapova gave credit to Wickmayer's fighting spirit 'This week her matches have all been tough, but in every one she has come through fighting in the final set. I have to be really focused tommorow and not give away any free chances'.

Wickmayer was also quick to recognise the talent of Sharapova. 'Obviously she is the top seed for a reason, she played great tennis last week in Monterrey, and has continued to do so here. I have to play better than in my other matches to take the title tommorow'.
