Molik is going for an astounding 5th final in a row here, and following her comprehensive win in Sydney last week, she looks well on course to achieve this goal, she remains so strong on plexi, it will take an inspired performance to stop her. MK is in the form of her career having won two titles already, she's positioned herself well to finally win a Slam, she just needs to hope luck is with her and the title could be hers, and finally Sharapova has just one ace, but she's using it wisely and should beat most of the other players in the field, can she take out the top faves though? I'm not so sure.

The Contenders

Ivanovic is a newcomer but has 4 aces and has already claimed some big scalps, namely Molik a few weeks ago, if she gets a nice draw, she could surprise and steal the title. Spears has been the model of consistency so far this season but has fallen short in the later rounds, she too will have to hope someone else takes out the top dogs to win the title, Serena reached the final in the Gold Coast, her game will prove tricky for most, but whether she can put 4 good wins together remains to be seen.

Devastated Kirilenko jets out of Melbourne, contemplates future

http://start10g.ovh.net/~jibisblo/albums/Kiri%20AusOpen%20deel%202/normal_maresz2_borda_maria_16.jpg

Disgraced Russian Star Maria Kirilenko has seen her dreams of a Grand Slam title shattered yet again, falling to qualifier Verz Zvonareva for the second time in as many weeks in a pair of hard-fought tiebreaks.

Kirilenko was visibly distraught as Zvonareva got a letcord on match point to win the match and quickly left the court in tears without shaking hands with her opponent, the chair umpire or event taking her bags with her off the court.

http://images.mirror.co.uk/upl/m4/dec2008/8/2/0876596E-EB17-CB2C-B387694D72589CD3.jpg

MK, also known as "The People's Champ", also skipped her mandatory post-match press conference and was originally fined $25,000 by the ITF, before ATC Tour Director The Daviator stepped in and waived the fine.

Sources close to Kirilenko's camp report that Maria has been crying non-stop since the match and is currently en route to a private, undisclosed location to recover from the blow. Kirilenko was the player to beat coming into the tournament, having won two consecutive events to begin the season.

MK is one of a few original players left on tour and has taken more than her fair share of close losses, particularly on the biggest stages on tour. One has to wonder if today's latest set-back could be her last.

Australian world number one Alicia Molik has advanced through to the quarterfinals of the Australian open with a tight two-set win last night. Playing in front of a packed house in the nights feature match, Molik dispatched Argentine Gisela Dulko in 87 minutes, 6-4 7-6(2) the score.

The first set saw Molik break early and hold serve to clinch it in the tenth game. The second set was a tighter affair with neither player dropping serve before Molik ran away with the tiebreak.

"I felt pretty good out there tonight, felt like, you know, there are some things I need to work on but for the most part felt really consistent and just happy with my game overall. I had played Gisela three times before and had never dropped a set so I knew if I played my game I should come out with the win."

Molik next plays American Britney Spears who cruised past Jelena Jankovic 6-3 6-1.

"Brit's a solid player. She's playing the best tennis of her career right now and is one to look out for. I have played her quite a few times now and like Gisela, have never lost a set... So I think once again, if I focus on my game and play some decent tennis I should - and hopefully will - come out with the win."

Molik and Spears were two of only four seeds who made it through to the quarterfinal stage with four others crashing out. While Michaela Krajicek and Kim Clijsters won three set tussles, world number two Maria Sharapova, recent Auckland and Gold Coast champion Maria Kirilenko, Flavia Pennetta and Daniela Hantuchova all fell to unseeded opponents.

"It was a strange day with so many top players going out. Especially Kirilenko, I don't think anyone expected her to lose this early but Vera is playing amazing and has proved she can take down anyone on her day."

"Honestly, coming into the tournament I felt like my biggest competition was Hantuchova. That may seem strange to people but given the new strategy I had adopted last week I felt like she was the one who had the best chance of stopping me, so yeah it is a bit of a relief that she is out, especially given that she was in my half. And of course with Kirilenko and Ivanovic out - who have both beaten me this year - it does make my road to a second grand slam title seem a little easier. But I know there are some great players still in and have to watch out. I will especially be keeping my eye on Misa in her next round."

El V is set to go all the way

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/9527/fgh2346h.jpg

Despite failing to qualify in her first event at Sydney, Elena Vesnina silenced her critics when she qualified into the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open. Drawing Serbian and the upset queen in this Aussie swing of the year Ana Ivanovic, Vesnina was confident that she would win as she feels Ivanovic is nothing special.

"Ana is a sweet girl and all but her game is nothing new. Very inconsistent and there's a lot of girls who hit the ball well." El V stated before the match.

The Russian had a tough time settling into this match, losing the 1st set 6-3 after double faulting six times and only hitting one ace. Her winner count was high but she also threw in many errors while Ivanovic's forehand was on fire.

After the second set and an outfit change, Vesnina went down 0-2 before starting a remarkable comeback, winning 6 of the last 7 games.

"I really did not want to lose 2 matches in a row and she was annoying me with her squeaky shoes and fist pumping. I was like, get over yourself and pumped myself up."

The final set was more of the same as Elena Vesnina went on to win 3-6 6-3 6-3.

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/4331/9iddbr4.jpg

After her win, Elena would have to face Daniela Hantuchova, the 7th seed. "I have a lot of respect for her but I really wasn't bothered playing her."

Vesnina ran away with the first eleven games, winning 6-0 5-0 as almost every groundstroke was pinning Hantuchova behind the baseline or it was simply a clean winner. Daniela started to take a bit more time after points, unsettling Vesnina and also began to find the lines.

"After being up 5-0 in the second set, I thought something was wrong. I was so used to losing leads and all that."

Hantuchova won the second set 7-6 in a tiebreaker but that wouldn't change the result as Elena Vesnina moved on to the quarterfinals 6-0 6-7 6-0.

"I feel very confident right now and this is getting me so much exposure as I'm filming a commercial and doing a few photoshoots just after this tournament. I plan to win though."

Britney rides her motorcycle over Molik in front of Alicia's home crowd.

In what was arguably Britney's biggest win of her career in the ATC, Britney defeated World #1 and crowd favorite Alicia Molik 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

In her post-match interview, Britney was overjoyed. "Now, I'm stronger than yesterday. I knew I had to go out there and break the ice. It felt like the crowd was saying gimme more. And so I gave it."

The tournament has seen favorites Molik and Kirilenko make early exits. Britney has arguably been the third-best player on this surface. Is this Britney's chance?

Stay tuned ...

Myskina last week in Sydney needed to Qualify and was ranked around 13, but that lit a much needed spark under her ass to find form and she has done just that Down Under. Nastya in Sydney picked up wins over rising new star Elena Vesnina, RG Champion Kim Clijsters, and Britney Spears to make the SFs before losing to Maria Sharapova. After that productive week, Nastya said,
"You know, that was just such a confidence building week for me. I beat Kim, which is always great to do since we have such a great rivalry. I beat Vesnina and Britney who are both still in the event here this week, which I am sure if I can make the final here will give me tons of confidence I have a shot at Slam #2."
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/545/21239296686myskina.jpg
Myskina hasn't exactly had the most success at the slams outside of Roland Garros. She has made it to the QFs or better at the USO in Season 2 and Season 4.
"Outside of the Paris, I have struggled in the slams, but I feel like that is going to change this season. I am really good form this week. Usually I am a slow beginner to the year, I have had dreadful results in Melbourne, but now I am in the SFs, so I have some belief now."
In Season 3, Nastya lost in the second round and lost 1st round in Season 4.
In the first round, Nastya took down 6th seed Flavia Pennetta 3-6 7-5 7-5.
"Flavia just came out blasting shots, so I needed some time to adjust. But once I was down 6-3 5-2, I said to myself, 'I have nothing to lose, just go for it' and shots just starting painting the lines as winners."
Myskina's backhand started to dictate the points and hit the winners to help her turn the match around and take the lead.
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/545/21238636725myskina.jpg
"I led 5-3, but as usual I started to let it slip away, but I continued to fight and I won. It's great to pick up this win, I feel like in these past few weeks I am beating all of these players who in past seasons owned me, so it's just another confidence boost."
In the QFs, for the second straight week, Nastya beat Kim Clijsters to level the H2H to 4-4.

S2 RG F: Maria Sanchez Lorenzo Anastasia Myskina def. Kim Clijsters 7-6(6) 6-3
S2 YEC RR: Kim Clijsters def. Maria Sanchez Lorenzo Anastasia Myskina 6-7(7) 6-4 6-4
S3 RG SF: Kim Clijsters def. Anastasia Myskina 4-6 7-6(6) 7-5
S3 Olympics QF: Kim Clijsters def. Anastasia Myskina 7-5 7-5
S4 Amelia Island R2: Anastasia Myskina def. Kim Clijsters 7-6(4) 6-4
S4 Cincinnati QF: Kim Clijsters def. Anastasia Myskina 6-2 6-3
S5 Sydney R2: Anastasia Myskina def. Kim Clijsters 7-6(4) 7-6(5)
S5 Australian Open QF: Anastasia Myskina def. Kim Clijsters 7-6(4) 7-6(5)

"In these past 2 weeks, I have been able to beat Kim Clijsters, which is a definite great moment for me."
In the Semi-Finals, Nastya will play Vera Zvonareva.
"She is talented, I mean....she made the SFs here....I won't be catty like her and spread rumors. But I will guarantee I will give this match my all and be determined to win it."
