Lisicki actually played very very well, but hit some bad errors to let Venus back into it most of the time.
Good solid start for Vee, served pretty great (minus the one break)!

Venus played at a high level throughout and Sabine really couldn't do much, except hope that Vee would make errors.

Sabine played her best when she broke Venus, but she couldn't sustain that high level.

Venus well done. Good luck in the next round.

A very well played game by Venus Williams. With Venus up a set and the 2nd set tied at 2-2, Sabine took a 40-0 lead in game 5. Then a bad line call call forced a challenge by Sabine, which she won, but she lost her winner on the play, with the point being replayed. That was all Venus needed, as Venus scored the next 5 points to take a 3-2 lead. Then Venus consolidated. Sabine cut the lead to 4-3, but game 5 turned out to be the difference in set 2.

Sabine was failing like crazy on her drop shots against Venus, not realizing that the Speedy Williams eats up terrrain very quickly with her daddy long legs. Sabine is not ready for the big stage, but tonight she was outplayed by Venus, who had a revenge factor her Family Circle last year. You can also throw in ist and 2nd prize at Dubai which 350,000 for the Winner and 175,000 for the runner-up. I think Venus likes big Steaks.

Venus got that "winner" back anyhow. With incredible pace, right on the line. Sabine would've never been able to get that one back. The challenge merely gave her a second shot at a point that she should already have lost anyway.

The first set was great. It was so good to see Venus not trying to hit Lisicki off the court, she was smart and let Lisicki come at her and just focused on keeping the ball deep and so many were smack on the baseline! Also, she often went straight down the middle to cut off Lisicki's angles. Sabine herself played extremely well in the first bar the clutch moments where she completely epic failed but it was fun to watch two players (shockingly) attempting to do completely different things. The second set saw Venus struggling with the side of her that wants her to just kill every single ball and she saved herself by playing extremely well on all the clutch points for and against her, especially that topspin second serve when she was triple bp down. Sabine came up with some great shots but just made too many errors. Go on Venus.

Also, recently i've been kinda scared that Venus has been starting to lose her speed but man was she quick today. :worship:

Venus was clearly well prepared for this match. She was so focussed from the start, which says something about her respect for Lisicki. I still think Sabine could be a top ten player, she is very exciting to watch. However, Venus hardly gave her a sniff today. Lisicki would have troubled most of the other players in the draw.

Here's hoping she can stay injury free and find a bit more consistency cos I'd like to see her right up there!

at 6/2 5/3 30/0 I was still so nervous for venus, that's how much she has shot my confidence in her.

Someone said after Venus' loss to Na and Serena's amazing comeback with Azarenka at the Australian Open to never trust Venus with a lead and to never count Serena out when she's down. Its pretty much true. Its so rare that Venus plays a complete game from start to finish unless she's at Wimbledon it seems. Some days she plays an amazing first set and then has a complete walkabout in the second. I think someone even called it at the Australian vs Na on her cheering board because she won the first set against Suarez Navarro 6-2 only to lose in 3. Its shocking how much her serve can go off and it really affects her entire game. I had a feeling if Venus had Serena's serve and Serena had Venus' serve that Serena would find a way to compensate and come through because she's such a fighter and Venus would come through much easier. They really do give us fans heart attacks sometimes.

Well done, Vee - good quality win! :bounce:

If Vee takes care of the people she's SUPPOSED to beat, all will be well.

Hmmm...famous last words. Thats a big IF with Ms. Vee sometimes. Some of the people she loses to I just shake my damn head because unlike Serena who seems to care less about anything outside of majors, I really think Venus tries to give her all in each event.

DOUBLEFIST
Feb 17th, 2010, 05:37 AM
unlike Serena who seems to care less about anything outside of majors, I really think Venus tries to give her all in each event.
I think that's the case as well, though I think Serena has made a very conscious - health concerned - decision about non slam events. I mean, lets face it, she hasn't been like this all her career. But, Vee, yeah, she seems to invest more in non slams. I think Vee needs more match play than Serena to really find her form, so hopefully this win is the beginning of that process.
