I honestly don't care if she loses matches playing like this. She needs a wake up call, because fuck...I don't what she is thinking sometimes. She honestly can't sustain concentration!

When she is playing well, like at the Fed Cup she is very enjoyable to watch :)

Btw, this statement is false. Pierce was chronically uncapable to play good tennis on weekly basis, she was always too "hot and cold".

When she's one like at RG or that American hardcourt swing, she's awesome to watch, actually probably one of the best players to watch. But when shes a bit off, it's very ugly.

Stosur defeats every argument ever made over doubles players ability. How she failed to recognize that she can attack Garbins backhand over and over again with the kick serve and volley or a backhand/forehand slice is beyond me. IŽd say 40% that it is an outright error from Garbin with her backhand, 30% is an easy volley/smash, 20% are a tough volley/smash and only 10% will be an outright Garbin point.

She has the most predictable patterns of play than any player in the top 20.

Kick serve-forehand. Kick-serve-forehand. Kick-serve-forehand......zzzzzzzz..... And people wonder why she has such a poor record in majors against top players.

She makes Dementieva look like a master tactician.

i so agree, it was painfully obvious anything decent to tax backhand will win the point. it is not like tax has an henin slice backhand, the moment she slices it players should be in and knocking off the floaty slice with a volley.

i must edit this to add, i don't condone stosur coming in with her volleys in singles, but she seems determined to, so this should be her tactic if she comes in.

She's frustratingly inconsistent. Obviously she's done something right to get so high in the world, but every time I watch her play, she's nothing short of shocking. Even her winners seem kind of flukey. And the serve, for all its hype, is actually quite predictable. All in all, not too impressed with her, but let's see what she can do before those RG points come off.

And she's pretty much the only thing keeping Australians interested in the sport, so I wish her well. It would be such a shame for a country with such a rich history in tennis to completely lose interest in it.

That's true, but I'm sure she was quite overwhelmed by the situation. Every other player on court with her was a GS champion, most of them multiple, and all huge names in tennis with the personalities to match.

It's one thing to play on a court in front of thousands of people ... it's an entirely different thing to be expected to not only speak but to be witty and jovial too. I'm sure she was intimidated by it all - but kudos to her for still going out there.

From what I saw of the match, she was smiling. She just wasn't engaging in the banter. How many jokes is she expected to crack on Federer's expense? Sorry, it is just beyond silly to judge someone's personality based on the fact that they were a little shy or nervous at a charity match. Maybe she has has great sense of humour in other settings where she is more comfortable.

Okay, I've had enough of the hate.

About her game:
Sam has a good serve, one of the best. A forehand like a whip, and crisp volleys. My god, she even has a slice backhand! Compare that to Jankovic, Wozniacki, even Azarenka. They're one dimensional. And for those of you who accuse her of only having a serve, as Karlovic once said "If I can win with only one shot, I'm a genius".

About her personality:
In the "Hit for Haiti" event, Sam said in her blog (Which I'm going to assume no-one read since it's obviously going to be too boring :o ) she was humbled to be playing amongst such Champions as Federer, Nadal and Serena. She wasn't being boring, she was nervous. If you took the time to actually watch any videos of her, you would realise she actually is extremely funny!

For those of you who might be interested, here's a link to an article about Sam: http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/news/articles/2010-01-21/201001211264065051171.html

I'm sick of everyone hating on Sam. Leave the girl alone.

Just because it's tennis doesn't mean it's a normal setting for her. The event was littered with players far more accomplished than her (if we discount Tomic who just made a brief appearance). She was hitting with the likes of Nadal and Federer for the first time in her life most likely and had a mic stuck to her body. Plus there was of course an expectancy from the crowd to see some entertaining tennis.

her slice backhand is not exactly a weapon, it is not knifed like henin, it is mostly used because she is so erratic on the 2 handed backhand, it is mostly floated.

as for her personality, she seems devoid of one, and her feeling intimidated by those other players to me only shows she knows she does not belong in that company. still no excuse for not having a laugh with them.

there are some very good parts to stosurs game, serve and forehand when she hits through it. but there are some huge holes in her game, like the backhand and touch and point construction, which i cant overlook. you use vika, jj and caro as examples of players with less shots, but they have the basic 2, foreahnd/backhand down, stosur does not.

1. I didn't say it was. It's just a bit of variety. I'm saying she doesn't just have one type of boring backhand.

2. Yeah. She seems devoid of a personality. Until you actually take the time to do a bit of research, which you obviously haven't.

3. She gave up her last day of practise before a Grand Slam to raise money for Haiti victims. It was a charity match, get over it!

Definitely one of my least favourite players to watch. I find her game is dull and a cure for insomnia. She's defiinitely no Mary Pierce who, inconsistent or not, had athletic movement and who was actually exciting to watch when on. Even when Mary was melting down it was an apalling spectacle - but at least it was a spectacle.

She looks like a stubborn player to me. Not very capable of adapting her game to what's going on in the court. She knows what her strenghts are and appears to plan her matches exclusively based on them, instead of sometimes milking weaknesses of her rivals.

There's also a lot of *thud* *thud* *thud* where she is involved. She smashes just about every ball above waist level. Hence, she misfires quite a bit too. I would think that only made watching her more exciting. ;)

Regarding all the uncessary hate on this thread, she appers to be a nice, shy girl. Not sure what all the hate is about? Give her a break. So she didn't smile enough. Big reason to hate her. Just imagine if she had refused to sign an autograph (*shudder*). I am guessing most of the haters to be around 12. And I mean 12 mentally.

She is probably my least favorite player. She has no finess to her game at all. Maybe if she lost all here muscles it my loosen up here tin can style of play. When she plays, it looks like only an oil can could loosen her up. When Stosur is playing , I just shut the TV off.

i hate the way she walks and the shape of her nose
And i don't like the way she speaks. Last year, when she won against kanepi here in dubai and when she started crying and talking BS,that was my worst tennis moment. Worse than Vaidisova being ranked 196. Worse than Maria being demolished by anyone.

Oh, and Stosur is shy. What can you do? Some people are shy and asking them for too much is not a good thing

Not the expert in body language or anything. But look at her in the 'Hits for Haiti' event. She's obviously quite shy.... and smiling (for all of you who missed it). :p

intimidated by what??? go out there, laugh at yourself and laugh at other players  they all did so what was so hard about it

this. there was no preasure on her tennis, go out laugh, have a joke, make some fans happy.

Some people get nervous speaking in front of massive audiences. (Some people get nervous talking in front of small ones )

Her job is to play tennis in front of a crowd, not to talk to them. I can go on stage and act in front of an audience with little problem - but asked to be myself in front of them or engage with them in a manner which isn't acting, I stumble.

I'm not a fan of Stosur, and don't find her tennis particularly exciting, but I don't think the Hit for Haiti event can be seen as a particularly good representation of her personality ...

Hmm. I don't like her game - that's what makes her dull to me as tennis player. But I'm not going to lay into her because she's shy or not particularly charismatic. She's free to smile as much or as little as she pleases - doesn't bother me either way.

It's not just her game, but her personality on court is always so emotionless. I watched all her matches at the Hopman Cup, Sydney and a couple at the Australian Open, even years of her matches, yet somehow I still find her very hard to warm to. If she took the shades, the hat and the serious, stern expression off for just a second, people would find her much more interesting!

Personally her game doesn't excite me unless I watch her playing S&V doubles. Then it's quite fun.

I think she is a shy girl. Plus I also think she is very reserved because she is protective of her sexuality. And I don't blame her at all. She probably feels like an outcast and is trying to just fit in with society and their judgements.

But give the girl a break. She's just being a tennis player - she isn't an actress.

personally i think Sam is just stuck up. She thinks she's better than all the players at hit for haiti she bought all the hype the australian media have placed on her ... Best second serve bla bla bla child if your second serve is basically the same as ur first nobody give a damn lol

You think shes stuck up? Really? Like really really  Wow, I never thought anyone would think that!

She brought the hyper by reaching a high ranking, but the media did the rest. Australia cant exactly boast when it comes to tennis players so when one of them does well they pounce on it. Not her fault.

I get the whole no emotion thing that people dont like. Sometimes I even wish she'd show some emotion, Ive heard her give a c'mon a couple of times which is nice, but if she likes to show no emotion and keep focussed then whatever works for her.

I just never though Sam would get so much negativity. She seems like one of the nicest players on tour, maybe a little shy, but I guess when you're use to players who do show more emotion and get more attention off the court and share a bit more, people would see her as a little boring in comparison.

I still think attacking a player personality wise, or if they hardly smile is a little unnecessary and too picky , but whatever, I guess thats what you get on a internet forum.

She's just a very reserved person. Even when the going gets tough she still maintains her composure which is more than can be said for many a player on the WTA, and the tour is all the worse for it.

You may not like her, but you have to respect her.

This.

I can't understand all this Stosur hate. What has she done wrong? Really?

Her game is okay. She has a great serve, and a great forehand. Her backhand should be better, but her tactics on court need a major overhaul and her volleys for a doubles specialist are BAD. A lot of this comes with a lack of confidence though, which can disappear in the middle of set instantly. When she has confidence in her shots she's got a lethal game, with big weapons. She doesn't show much emotion on court, because I think she feels uncomfortable doing so. She doesn't have to fake that sort of thing if it isn't instinct.
