I thought this would be a nice idea since usually the first title's pictures are the hardest to find, like Jankovic's 2004 Budapest win, Davenport's 1993 Lucerne win and Venus' 1998 Oklahoma City where there were no pictures and someone needed to take screen caps:lol:. You can post pictures and videos of anyone else's first title.

Elena and petrova, for the kind of talent they are, must have taken the longest into their career before winning a title.
Petrova played 115 tournaments (counting only MDs) before claiming her first title, Dementieva played 91 tournaments.
For comparison, other top-3 Russians Myskina, Kuznetsova and Sharapova "wasted" only 1, 8 and 13 tour MDs respectively before winning their first trophies.

In the late 90's and early 2000's, it was much much harder to win a title than it is nowadays. Less withdrawals, more top/elite players played events, the quality and strength of the tour was much stronger. During that time, the top players scooped up all the titles, and Elena, although she was a great player, was not part of the very elite. I remember the threads, when is Elena going to win a title..
It's easy to see why Kournikova didn't win a title during the time that she played,.. if she stuck around just a little longer, she could've won a few big events, maybe even reached a couple slam finals.

:bs:
Kournikova was 62 42 40/15 up in her first tier I final. Had she been good enough she would've won that elusive singles title in 1998 already.
I just wanted to ask about Fran's picture and here you go...

I believe this is mostly due to the Tier level tourneys they played, even coming up. Lots of players with "earlier" career wins were playing more mini-mouse tourneys with softer fields.

You can wave the bs flag if you'd like, i'm not looking for an argument, its clearly just my opinion. You don't have to agree
But are you disagreeing with me that if Kournikova hadn't stuck around during the period after when Hingis, Graf, Seles and Capriati were not present, the sisters not playing full schedules cause of injuries and personal issues, that she wouldn't have won a title? Or are you saying she was just not good enough mentally to win a title period, because she lost to a young Venus Williams.. i'm not sure.
There have been lesser players than Kournikova (imo opinion, of course ;)) that have won Tier I's and premier events.

Amelie Mauresmo, more than anyone else, exemplifies how the tour has changed in the past decade. When she came through, people talked about her as this muscled, powerful woman with huge shots. And by the time she retired, she was probably the LEAST powerful of her peers (2+ slam champions).

^^ That Birmingham trophy is I think one of the oldest women's sports trophies around. It used to be the Wimbledon trophy.Indeed, it was given to Maud Watson when she won the first Wimby in 1884, and is known as the Maud Watson trophy. I remember reading a piece by Billie Jean King about how she was very keen to win the first tournament in Birmingham in the early 80's, because she knew the history of the trophy and wanted her picture taken holding it up!

She beat Benesova , Azarenka and 1st seed Bartoli . Not so random , now ;D At least she finished her career with one title [:
I meant that Asians, particularly the Japanese are usually trying to avoid clay events, so it's a bit funny how Morigami's only tournament win came at a clay tournament:p

I remember watching Jelena J winning her first title in Budapest on Serbian TV ... can't believe there is no a single photo?
Did it show the trophy ceremony? If so and someone recorded, a screen cap could have been taken. That's what happened with Venus' first title win at 1998 Oklahoma City. Absolutely no pictures, but vswfan had the match and took screen caps for us.

Well there are 3 possibilities:
-You said there was a video, maybe it has the ceremony, I don't know, but then screen cap.
-Someone goes to the site and looks for a wall of champions and maybe they have a picture for the 2004 Champ with trophy.
-Email the tournament director asking if they have a picture of JJ with the trophy.
There are definitely no pictures of it on the internet. 2005 and onwards trophy pics can be found, just not 2004:o
