Batting practice for Sha'po'.

The thing about Maria is, in these nonslam events, she tends to do what she's supposed to do. I think her nerves have been coming into play at the slams recently. Btw, was her best result in the slams last year RG? ...too lazy to journey over to wta site.

Yes. Sharapva's best result was 0-6 2-6 against Cibulkova (QF). :)

You know, I know this sounds crazy and flies in the face of the whole "Cow on Ice" thing, but Maria played fairly well last year. I think she definitely has a shot at going deep into the tourny. She seems to surprise people at RG and thrives on the fact that there are no serious expectations for her to do well. Look, I'm not saying she's gonna win it - especially with Juju back in the game who's got to be the odds on favorite - but I do think she can be impressive there.

The win over Petrova last year was huge for her second tournament back. Perhaps if she'd made her comeback just a bit earlier and played a few more matches she could have had a shot at the title last year. Safina and Kuznetsova in the last two matches would have been tough but neither are above collapsing against mentally stronger players on the biggest stages.

Having said that, with more matchplay under her belt and on more favourable surfaces, Pova has been dreadful at the other 3 slams. It's a shame.

From what I saw of Shenay at the AO, no way is she mentally tough enough to win a single set.

Maria 6-2 6-2.

If Maria is making errors, then 7-5 6-4.

Sharapova in 2, something like 6-4, 6-2.

Hopefully Shenay is serving well (she has a great serve imo) and looking to take some risks with her forehand and of course use her solid net skills. If she wants to stay on the baseline and slice her backhand back and roll forehands into the court, there's not going to be much of a match. She just doesn't have power on her groundies to stay with Masha. Good luck to her though. :)

I think a lot of people are underestimating Shenay, the same way people underestimated Jamea Jackson at Birmingham.

It's a mistake. If Shanay can get her slice to bite on the indoor court, play with some variety, and finish off points at net, I think she can make this match tougher than some of you think it can be.

Wawrinka's ass.

Ivanovic took the net away from Shenay and played with the best net awareness I've seen in a match from her since her Roland Garros win.

I don't see Sharapova pulling off the same true volleys that Ana made in that match.

Wawrinka's ass.

I think Maria comes into Memphis really really focused after her disasterous trip down under. Maria will win this tourney without dropping a set this week.

Ideally, I see a straight-forward straight sets win for Maria. But if her serve doesn't turn up and she starts spraying errors everywhere, and if Shenay's slice troubles her it couild be a different story. (3 sets.) But I don't see her losing to Perry unless she plays an utterly abysmal match.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I can't stand Maria Sharapova. And she can lose in the first round of everyt tournament til the end of time, my point is that she has a lot riding on this small tournament and a lot of questions to answer: 1. why is her comback taking so long? 2. Australian Open was a fluke. 3. She needs for her game to start clicking here so she can reassert herself in IW and Miami. 4. If she can't sweep the field in a small MM tournament, how can she be a cotender in the big events and GS. 5. Can you imagine the pressure she's under from all of her endorsement contracts to start putting up bigger results?
