I watched the first set and the beginning of 2nd (then my livestream died:()... Petkovic was really good. I just hoped she couldn`t keep this level for the whole match.

Oudin hasn`t won yet ... ;)

Phew!
Always nice to see Lena win a match after losing the 1st set, she used to do it all the time but lately it doesn#t happen too often.
Petkovic played great, if she can keep this up she's definitely heading for at least top 20. Great composure.
Lena really wants to win this title, whoever she faces next round, she's lost to both of them before. So it'll be tough.
But I believe she can go all the way.
Yay:bounce::bounce:

First time to see Petkovic and she was very impressive. She even had some good moments in that last set despite the scoreline. Elena is still finding her form after a long layoff, but Andrea--well, if she can keep playing like this, she'll score some more big wins.

But Lena moves on to the semis.

ok this is probably gonna be a bit harsh on lena but i have got to the stage where she bores me.

she plays every match the exact same way, doing the exact same thing hitting the same shots. petkovic was the more aggressive, more enterprising and more entertaining for it. lena ground it out, because petkovic cant yet keep that 1st set level up for the whole match, but if she did i have no doubt lena would have just kept on hitting away crosscourt, same spin, same pace and just lost.

i know this is harsh on dementieva, and i have total respect for her as an athlete, it is just she seems completely rigid in her career and after watching her for years i barely even notice her anymore. she does what she does, and she does it well but she doesn't do anything else.

I don't see the Williamses, the Belgians and the Serbians doing anything differente either - That's why we have differente categories for differente playing styles. :wavey:

Being a Lena fan maybe doesn't make me objective when commentating on her, but watching that match today, I realized, she's the most professional player on Tour. She was being hammered out there by Petkovic (after few games they showed the stats and Andrea had 10 winners to Lena's one!), but she just didn't let off. Even in that first set - all of the games she won she had to really fight for them by saving several break points. She could have easily lost the first set 6/1 and concentrate on the second one. She even could have easily lost the match (as for example Kuznetsova, Petrova and Serena (not at a GS of course) would all have done) and go to Dubai for a bigger tournament and get few days of preparation there, but that's not who she is, that's not what she stands for. She gives her all in every match she plays. And yes - sometimes I hate, that her Grand Slam performances suffer because of that, but on the other hand - it's something I really admire in her!

Well, maybe she knew Petkovic couldn't keep her level and wanted to stay just "firm" and let Petkovic lose the match just like Petkovic let Rezai lose the match yesterday...a point of tennis is a win,not just winners...so,this could be also her tactic in those kind of matches!

She doesn't though. She's far more enterprising when she plays well, and she did, even today, actually come to net.

But overall she was way too passive in her last two matches, and her serve is not working right now.

Today, yes, Petokovic deserves some credit for keeping Lena from settling into any kind of positive groove. But it's also clear Lena was without her "hitting partner"/de facto coach and that she is one of those players who needs to play week in/week out to have any kind of form whatsoever.

But when her game is off, she does become very predictable and dull, and it gets her in trouble. But she CAN have some variety. Today was her "B" game.

Dementieva never lost her poise. However, Petkovic blew opportunities with break points in set 2. Dementieva made Petkovic pay for her mistakes. Experience clearly won out in this match with the teacher beating the student. In fact, Petkovic had 3 straight ACES in game 8 set 2 to tie the 2nd set at 4-4, but Dementieva would take matters into her own hands starting with game 9 set 2.

I would love to see Oudin duplicate her US Open win over Dementieva, but I see Dementieva winning this match.

I watched Petkovic at the AO and thought that she had the makings of a good player, but then there are so many young players who I've thought that of so...

I hear what Sammy is saying because that was pretty much the same complaint I issued after watching her against Henin in Oz. I found her play predictable and frustrating to watch. On the other hand, Max (who clearly knows her game well) is also right - Elena *can* do more than be passive, retrive everything, rely on her superior fitness and just grind her opponents down and rally them to death. (See Wimbledon '09 semi). But too often she chooses that path and when she does, unless you're a fan it's not always interesting to watch.

Anyway, congrats to Elena.

Elena played pretty horrible for about a set and a half. In the first set, she hit about three or four winners; very passive, ineffective hitting, not making Andrea move or do anything other than hit huge forehands and let her run to net and hit an easy volley. I knew Andrea had great potential off the ground, good serve, decent volleys, but she has very distinct weaknesses, and even when Elena raised her level I rarely saw her exploit those weaknesses.

But when Elena did raise her level, it was nice to watch. She came to net a decent bit for her standards, and she hit some lovely volleys. Her finesse is nothing to behold at, but reaching drop shots, executing volleys, some excellent BH DTL passing shots, she impressed me more in this aspect of the game than her usual baseline grinding. I think her only backhand winners were the passing shots, and she only hit a few outright forehand winners. Serving and returning (moreover, her anticipation on the return) improved tremendously as the match went on, as she got more accustomed to Andrea's patterns (FH CC, typically). When Elena started getting the monster forehand CC returns, she started trying to go DTL or up the middle, and they all went long. Interesting. And finally in the third set, I noticed Elena started crossing her backhand more, making it go wider and deeper and it set up easier shots for her.

In general, I thought Andrea played excellent tennis. She has potential for an all-court game, and her forehand is an excellent shot when she's confident and going for it. Her A-game is capable of beating just about anyone, IMO, but when her level drops...just about anyone can beat her. I noticed this against Clijsters and Kuznetsova when I've seen Andrea play before.

It was a decently played match. Elena's FH DTL and volleys were nice at times, but Andrea was the real star--really lovely play. Too bad her fist pumps and come ons remind me so much of another player...

Petkovic hits some good shots

In two fed cup matches she didnt hit any at all. When pressure comes, she is useless. Her game was useless.

Itīs so awkward to see her play so well now when last week she didnt attack once, passive like hell, and down and back in every single rally.

Good luck Lena in next round. She s not gonna lose to Oudin twice ;)
