Yeah you should ring tennis officals around the world and get her to give back her wta tennis titles, no.1 ranking, olympic medal, fed cup title, grand slams and anything else that would make her a so called "great" tennis player - heck why not ask her to give back her money too and take her dog Sophie that'll learn her real good!

I don't think this is a bomshell at all.

Henin abruptly retiring was a bombshell.
Henin abruptly un-retiring was a bombshell.

To the mind of many people, Amelie she was already in somewhat as semi-retirement.
She has not palyed in how many montths?
It is only fitting that she decided to play her last tournament in her country, to bid a formal farewell to her fans.

Why didn't she do it on the big stage at RG?
Maybe the pressure she has felt in that tournament throughtout the years is too much to relieve again.

Well, she's not on the entry list for a start, and I would presume the draw has taken place by now / will be taking place tomorrow.

I would love to see Amelie on court one more time, but I seriously doubt that it will happen. This is probably just a mistranslation of the fact that she'll be at the tourney for her official retirement ceremony next Wednesday and will present the trophy to the winner on finals day.

Either the website has it wrong, or the tournament organizers have not updated their website.

The tournament started, she's not on the entry list : http://ww2.opengdfsuez.com/joueuses.php?op=simple&language=fr
The official website only mentions her to recall she won here before and retired. I didn't find anything about a ceremony.
Anyway, if she planned to play in a tournament, the french media would speak of it.

It took her a long time to finally decide to retire, and she's no Santoro running after ridiculous records.
I won't be surprised if she shows up watching the tournament, but she won't play.

Yasmine
Feb 7th, 2010, 10:36 AM
If that was true it would be all over the EDF site, and in the media around here (I live in Paris). So I doubt it. Even if that would have been nice to see her here one last time :awww: Actually last time I saw her play live was last year's semis against Jankovic  .

She spoke in French I guess. What did she say ?

n French, Elena Dementieva came to honor him with brilliance and class: "I feel sad. (...) As a person and as a player, you will remain in our memories. There is a generation Mauresmo.

It then Elena Dementieva, a finalist last year who came on center court. "Our paths have crossed, she also started and moved in almost perfect French the Russian player. Today, I feel sad. Amelia, one of the most talented players leaving. And I'm not sure anyone could replace her.

Pathetic that you have to bring this up in this thread. And it's not even the same case. If Serena or Venus were retiring they would receive many, many words of praise and admiration from almost everyone, so stfu with the double-standard crap.

Mauresmo was a great player who added variety and interest to the tour with her unique playing style. She will be sorely missed by many and I hope she enjoys her life beyond tennis. :)

I didn't see it either but with the translations and pics I don't feel like I missed a beat. Thanks to everyone for sharing in a great moment for an even greater person. Amélie looked quite emotional and I'm glad some of the biggest personalities were there - Fran mightn't be the biggest star in the field but you can tell that a party wouldn't be a party without her and Elena is just a wonderful person.
