They have both been struggling for completely different reasons and this year will tell us a lot about both players. Who do you think will have the better season & why? What could both players do differently that would have an immediate effect on their game?

Sharapova will do better overall, but I think that they will both have a better year compared to 2009.

Pretty much agreed.

Ana will be better in 1st half of season (reaching RG and FED CUP finals), but Maria probably in 2nd half.

Great question.

I would definitely say Sharapova. I think she's got the mental strength to pull through her difficulties. I think when things do start to turn around for her, she'll be more likely to believe this is where she is SUPPOSED to be other than questioning if it's just a good streak. She has that imperious confidence.

Ana, whom I like a lot, just doesn't strike me as mentally strong enough to constantly do battle at the highest levels of the game with the biggest names. In other words, Sharapova seems to believe she belongs there. Ana, not so much.

However, I do believe the Michael Joyce cup has run dry for Maria.

Maria just needs to make some adjustments to her game and get more matches. Ana still has the game, but she needs to get her head checked.

Sharapova came back from injury, played four and a half months of tennis but still had a better year than Ivanovic (and had more matches than her ). I don't see how that will change this season apart from another injury.

They so are. I want him.

But back on topic. I'm expecting Maria to have the better '010 but hopefully Ana's won't be a complete trainwreck either. :p

What a good question !!

Maria : I think she is gonna do the better of these two beauties, saying that though she is just too inconsistent at the moment due to lack of confidence and match play and i'd have to say that she maybe needs to start playing either Sydney or Brisbane before the Australian Open because when she was at her best she could get away with playing an Exo tour in Hong Kong but at the moment she needs real matches under her belt. Also I have to agree with the earlier post that the Joyce years are coming to an end , you can see they have a great working relationship but I feel this should be the time in her career when her game becomes more rounded and she becomes a more complete player but it just don't seem to be happening !

Ana : Maybe some :help: with the nerves !!

Overall though i'm interested/tiny bit worried about Maria's 2010

I want Ana, but if she doesnŽt change her game completely and plays like 2007/2008, sheŽll stuck where she is, top 30 at most...

Maria is a mystery

No question, Sharapova.

Sharapova. Sharapova's played reasonably well outside the slams, she just has some mental issue about the slams. Ana hasn't played reasonably well in or outside the slams.

For a player of her potential Ivanovic can't possibly have a worse season then 2009 so she will improve but Sharapova will generally have a better year.

Loking for a reason to go against conventiona wisdom .....

Both players are looking at having to re-structure their games. If they both have to make the sort of changes that Mauresmo made, I would think Ivanovic could make those changes faster. She had a more well-rounded game to start with, though Sharapova had the more highly developed baseline game.

Of course, we don;t know WHY Ivanovic's game fell apart.

Ivanovic is still relevant?

Anyways, after Indian Wells, she will finally be ranked with how she has been playing:o

Both will be dreadful, if they make the 3rd round of any slam it will be an achievement
