After informations that Serbs will play without Jankovic and Russia without any TOP10 player things are radically change in last 2 days with JJ and Sveta decision to play. No doubt that Russians is in better shape right now, but with support of 10.000-15.000 home crowd in Belgrade "Arena" two former #1 from Serbia has good opportunity to regroup herself. If final doubles match will be decider Russia will be bold favorite, but before that Russians must to beat JJ and Ana twice on their soil.

BTW winner will have open road to final (in SF vs sisterless USA or starless France).

So what do You think who will survive this World Group I Quarterfinal showdown.

Igor says:
"Off court we're friendly. On the court we play", stressed the 24 year old Russian.

Ana is too excited after leaving her man handprints on the brandnew Avala Tower to win any tie. All the hope rests on the Serbian fighting heroine with a never ending period.
4-1 for Russia.

Jelena and Ana never choke mentally in FED CUP matches like they do so often in WTA tour.
Since 2004 Jankovic FC h2h is 17-1 and Ivanovic 10-1 in singles! They both is in bad shape, but at least they will not beat herself, so Sveta and Alisa must to overplay Serbian duo if want to win this match-up.

Tarpischev say yesterday for Serbian media that winner of this tie will probably win FC-2010.

Serbia IS an underdog in that match. Both, Jelena and Ana suck badly. And for the Fed Cup h2h stats, Serbia was never in World Group, so they were always playing lower ranked players in those European groups III and II.

Betting websites favourite Russia as wellWhich Betting websites? There is no obvious favorite (except on this GM-Poll ) - so "upset" in any direction is wrong term when #8 and #23 (both former #1) hosts #4 and #31.

Serbs never faced in FED CUP Kuznetsova GS-champ level opponents, but still won many Kleybanova level opponents (MJ Martinez, Medina, Sugiyama, Cibulkova, Srebrotnik, A.Radwanska, Wozniacki...).

I check also Sveta FC h2h since 2004 (12-4 in singles) and notice that only two of her opponents ever reach TOP10 (Pennetta and Molik) so Ana and JJ will be biggest names so far in her FC record. And Sveta also have some REAL UPSETS in past (Schiavone, Golovin, Dulko, Dechy) despite she is all the time TOP10/TOP5 player.

Corswandt
Feb 3rd, 2010, 03:44 PM
Serbia. Kuznetsova is useless indoors and Kleybanova won't win a match. Even if Jankovic didn't play, Russia would find a way to screw this.

This will be on Portuguese TV for some reason. I very much doubt attendance at any session will reach 10-15.000 BTW.

The last article I read says that even if Jankovic joins the team, it's unlikely she'll actually be able to play. I'd have to say that gives an edge to a still depleted Russian team, though it's not a lock.

Ana has a very good record against Kuznetsova. Also I saw flashes of her form returning in the Australian Open. This will be a very good match for her to play into form without the pressure of being a favorite in a tournament. To me it all boils down to which Ana & JJ shows up because when on Ana has the biggest game of all of them but JJ & Kuznetsova are better movers. Kleybanova is very capable of winning if Ana & JJ are not on their game.

We shall see. People underestimate Ana because she has been in a slump lately. She had several nagging injuries throughout the year last year & she never seemed to remain healthy long enough to rebuild her confidence or the need for match play. Hopefully this year she will remain healthy so that she can resume her championship form.

I very much doubt attendance at any session will reach 10-15.000 BTW.Serbia with Ivanovic, Jankovic, Djokovic...etc (Seles biggest name from past) don't have any WTA tournament and just one ATP mickey mouse. Against Japan (Sugiyama&Morita) for World Group play-off last season there is over 10K both days in Belgrade Arena.

The last article I read says that even if Jankovic joins the team, it's unlikely she'll actually be able to play. I'd have to say that gives an edge to a still depleted Russian team, though it's not a lock.Jelena will play at least 1st match.

On the side note, Ivanovic is going to score her first top-10 win since October 2008.But her TOP10 h2h is not negative in last 8 months (0-0 :p), her personal h2h vs Sveta is 5-1 (won last 4) and Alisa is still not even TOP30 .

Also Sveta's Indoors career stats is just pathetic for her rating (under-60%, 43W-31L).

But her TOP10 h2h is not negative in last 8 months (0-0 :p)

That's because she has sucked so badly that she hasn't even made her way deep enough into draws to face top 10 opponents.

Actually, what is more remarkable about GOAT Ivanovic's slump is that, since so many of her losses have been to scrubs, her record vs top tenners hasn't deteriorated all that much since the days in which the only top tenners she faced were the ones she pwned (Danka, Sveta, Petrova).

Agreed. 26-30 is far too good record for someone like Ivanovic. Her record against slam champions would be more indicative of her abilities, imo:

S.Williams 0-2
J.Henin 0-5
K.Clijsters 0-1
L.Davenport 0-1
M. Pierce 0-1
A.Myskina 0-1
V.Williams 1-6
A.Mauresmo 2-6
M. Sharapova 2-3
(subtotal 5-26)

Of course she pwns Kuznetsova (5-1) so her overall W/L record vs GS champions is still a respectable 10-27.

Btw, in 27 losses to the aforementioned players Ivanovic won a grand total of 3 sets :worship:

BTW for all here who called Serbian FC team with two former #1 and huge home crowd support "underdogs" and their eventual win against Russia "upset", here is Fed Cup 1st round odds:

(2.25) Ukraine vs. Italy (1.57)
(1.40) Czech Republic vs. Germany (2.75)
(1.50) Serbia vs. Russia (2.50)
(1.50) France vs. USA Usa (2.50)
(1.83) Australia vs. Spain (1.83)
(1.80) Poland vs. Belgium (1.91)
(1.03) Estonia vs. Argentina (10.00)
(1.14) Slovak Republic vs. China (5.00)

So according to betting odds only real underdogs in this round are China (without Li,Zheng,Peng) and Dulkoless Argentina (without TOP300 player).

In this tie they actually give better chances to Serbia, and because Russians has much better doubles it's obvious that bookmakers like most realistic scenario expect 3 SRB wins in singles. Also, they obviously don't take seriously drama queen injury warnings

Result of this match is wide open and everything is possible.

Serbian FED CUP headcoach Dejan Vranes yesterday says (and today repeat) that if Serbia beat Russia in semifinal will play again in Belgrade no matter who will be our next opponent (USA or France). I'm very confused based on what he give such statement, especially in France case, because only meeting so far against France in early 90'is (as Yugoslavia) we played on neutral UK court  Against USA we also played only once and USA is host of that match - but even that is maybe not guarantee us hosting because that match happen in 1976 when we also played as former Yugoslavia. In Davis Cup Serbia have successor status with former Yugoslavia, so guess same thing in FED CUP - but I still don't see how that is helpful against eventual match vs France in semifinal?

BTW I look again at bookmakers odds to see odds of first day matches and notice dramatic changes for overall winner odds. Now Serbia is just slight favorite and odds from 1.50-1.53 couple hours ago rise to 1.67-1.73 and odds on Russian overall victory drops from 2.38-2.50 to 2.00-2.10! I must to say that this new odds are more realistic because Russians has almost sure point in doubles match so Serbs must win 3 matches in singles for overall win. Talking about first day matches odds - better ranked players (Sveta vs Ana, and Jelena vs Alisa) have clean favorite status with odds about 1.55 vs 2.30 which seems to me overrated in both cases.

I think result of first match between Ivanovic and Kuznetsova (Saturday, 16:00 CET) will be probably crucial for whole tie.

Ana choked against Shahar twice in 2006: in singles and in doubles, although Serbia had a present from Israel when Smashnova retired against Timotic. If not that loss Serbia would have probably been in the World Group in 2008. And 1st round and SF would have been played before Ana's slump in 2008, so that were the times when Serbia had the best chances ever. :(

However JJ choked against Cirstea in 2008.

This means Serbia have open road to FC2010 title if beat Russians playing in Belgrade semifinal and final both  (of course if survive Belgrade Arena Russia is also bold favorite to win 2010 title)

Another proof that Serbia vs Russia FED CUP match will be one of most notable tennis events this month is fact that ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti arrived in Belgrade to watch. FED CUP is in crisis with old format so ITF and WTA desperately needs showdowns like this with over 10K+ crowd and several big names included.

I was not too much impressed today by Sveta (except on her todays very productive backhand) and I think that Indoors hardcourts is still her worse surface (even worse than grass) - simple Ana was that bad today. But same thing which happen with JJ against Alisa at 4-6 1-4 15-40, maybe will happen already tomorrow with Ana - never underestimate former #1! If JJ repeat 2nd half of today match she is favorite vs Sveta, and Ana even in todays pathetic performance in 2nd set at 4-2 shows some signs of recovering (before on bizarre way lose her momentum again).

Only thing which I really don't see tomorrow is Serbian eventual win in doubles - so if they want play in next round they need wins in both singles tomorrow, which is not that impossible at all . BTW weather condition today is awful in Belgrade and organizer also have wrong billet-sell tactics. Today I think there is under-10K crowd but tomorrow will be about 15.000 which maybe will be crucial factor.

23.000 being the full capacity, then I'd say you never had more than say 5-7.000 people in there, if that many.
