S. Williams vs. Clijsters
V. Williams vs. Kuznetsova

...look how that worked out.

The event will take place on March 1st at Madison Square Garden.

Who cares? Venus, why are you playing this crappy event?

Lose. Lose early.

As far as exhibitions go, this one does seem rather pointless.

It's pretty stupid how Safina made two GS finals last year and didn't get an invite. Then again, BJK adores the sisters.

S. Williams def. Clijsters 6-1 or 6-0 (Kim unable to recover from that trashing from Petrova)
Sveta def.Venus 7-6 (8) (Venus led 5-2, only to lose in the tiebreak)

S. Williams def. Sveta 6-3 4-6 7-5

Nice pay check for the four players and it brings tennis back to the Garden. Plus doesn't this balance off the money Serena and Venus are fined for missing Indian Wells?

Well it's NYC and I think they rather pick Venus.

They don't actually pay those fines, it gets reduced from their year end bonus that they receive from WTA.

Yes indeed. Bring back YEC to the garden please!

the yec at msq was the best...
but i don't think tennis is popular enough anymore. the place used to be packed...

looking forward to this again this year! :bounce: I think it's a cool idea  madison square garden needs something like this since the yec is no longer held there, and it's a nice way to honor BJK :yeah:

BJK is the reason why Chris Evert didn't get at least 10 FO titles. So no.

The reason Venus is there IMO, is because she was the finalist from last year.

Well clearly, but some people were wondering about Venus' selection over Safina's (who was #1 for most of last year and reached 2 major finals to Venus' 1), since this event is marketed as a showdown of the major champions of the previous year, and while neither Venus nor Safina won majors, last year, Safina out-perfromed Venus at the majors last year.

But I think she will get $250,000 just for the participation. If she will end as a finalist $300,000 and $400,000 for winning the tournament.

the idea for this is great, the format and when it takes place are whack. it should be in december like a climax to the year and it should be 2 days, 3 sets semi's and finals.

as it stands it is basically a hit and turn up for the money.

CJ07

How is it a waste of time?
Time is money, and for just showing up you get more money than almost any tournament all year.

So its hardly a waste.

The event doesn't even last a day. If I could earn $400,000 in half a day, I'd surely go.

Since this is an exhibition, does the prize money counts towards your career prize money total? anyone?

youizahoe
Feb 4th, 2010, 03:45 AM
No it's not counted on WTA as wins, title or career prize money total.

A $250,000 guarantee, that's why.
