Most of the American announcers utterly fail at getting the names right (especially Brad Gilbert). I often wonder why the players don't correct them, though Dinara tried, and it worked for about one tournament. Praise be to Dinara for trying, though. She needs to work on Richard Williams now.

No. It is one of the easiest. It is just that some people (in the announcing booth) make no effort at all to learn the proper pronunciation.

Pennetta is usually called "peneta"

Now you are getting fussy. Yes, to distinguish this, they might need to learn the Italian language. :)

One of the names I find butchered so often, making me wonder if this guy has some different pronunciation than the Italian one, is: Marco Chiudinelli. From my perspective, that is one of the easiest names to pronounce. But some of these commentators say Chew di nelli or Shoe di nelli. What an assault on the ears! I have heard this so often, I'm starting to wonder if this Swissy pronounces his name like a Frenchman or a Spaniard.

Bud Collins (the venerable tennis historian with the wonky wardrobe). Yeah, I heard him pronounce it the way it was demonstrated in the video across all the countries. I confess I thought he had it wrong then, but I know better now. Good for Bud :yeah:

I love him and his outfits! To bad people don't listen to him. :p

schiavone is difficult to be pronounced to non-Italians

for english speakers every name is difficult - horrible to listen to english commentators

During Caro's match vs Cibulkova the Eurosport commentator (the new guy I always forget his name) finally made a try of pronouncing her name in the Polish version and actually did better then I expected (I'm aware he probably bit his tongue several times while trying to do it off-screen in first place :tape: ).

I barley hear anyone pronounce that Russian players names correctly. My mom gets so pissed. Whats worst is that they all think they are right when I try to tell them how to announce Maria Sharapovas name.
There is one umpire that says Marias name correctly and this old guy form the tennis channel says her name correctly.

The thing with Sharapova is that when she's talking in English, she also says she's Maria SharaPOVA (not ShaRApova as would be correct in Russian):sobbing:
 I don't know if she gave up bothering to correct it or what, but at the same time they are trying to pronounce Oudin's name as she told them to, not the English way.

This depends on how closely you want to emulate the Russian pronunciation, which is more like SHVYEH-do-va. In a sense, the Russian pronunciation is somewhere between the two choices you offer.

I understand Maria's attitude. My last name is Christiansen, which is more or less kris-DYAN-sen in Danish and KRIS-chun-sen in English. I used to live in an English-speaking country, and I just shrug and accept the English version when speaking English.
