We all know Serena gets up for the majors, but here are some numbers to put it into perspective. :) 4 of her last 5 titles were all grand slams, the only non slam being the year ending championships at that

1. Serena Williams (12/36)...33.3%
2. Venus Williams (7/41)...17.1%
3. Justine Henin (7/41)...17.1%
4. Svetlana Kuznetsova (2/12)...16.7%
5. Maria Sharapova (3/20)...15%
6. Ana Ivanovic (1/8)...12.5%
7. Kim Clijsters (2/36)...5.6%

For comparison, some other past slam winners:

Jennifer Capriati (3/14)...21.4% JCap always did have a "high" number of slams compared to her regular tournament wins.
Steffi Graf (22/107)...20.6% :yeah:
Monica Seles (9/53)...17.0%
Chris Evert (18/154)...11.7% Only so "low" because of how she dominated the rest of the year during her career.
Martina Hingis (5/43)...11.6%
Mary Pierce (2/18)...11.1%
Martina Navratilova (18/167)...10.8% Same as Evert.
Amelie Mauresmo (2/25)...8.0%
Lindsay Davenport (3/55)...5.5%

A whopping 1/3 of your titles are grand slams...yeah it's pretty sick. Serena was at about 25% (7 of 28) a few years ago..which is already a huge percentage...but she's outdone herself.

And if you count the tier I's..2/3 of her titles are tier I or better. DANG!

but you make it sound like it is a positive thing per se, which it isn't. i mean, a player winning 20 slams and a total of 100 titles surely has a better career than on winning 20 slams and a total of 40 titles.

jennifer capriati is the best example. she has a great ratio, but only because she has won very few titles.

Jennifer is no Serena..Serena has almost as many majors as Jen has career titles.

Anybody can win some tier IV and end up with 50+ titles but only 1 or 2 majors. But when you only win big, that's good!

Of course. If anything it only highlights Serena's possible underachievement in tour events relative to her huge collection of slams. Another unique feat of Serena's is that all her titles are big/major (Tier II+) titles.

Well clearly not anybody because the current world no.1 has never won one. In fact she lost in the 1R of her last one! Don't write off the accomplishment of winning a smaller tournament when plenty of players who are supposed to win them, don't.

Matt? In a thread about Serena? Oh but still negative, so I guess it's still same old.

Serena had some weak years, specially between ' 05 and ' 07. But for the rest she always was baggin her tournament victories.

Since this is posted in GM (and besides the therad is not only about Serena), yesh there is a risk people like me are posting in this thread. And I'm not always negative about any player.

 Yet she has won everything that REALLY matters. Miami, IW, YEC, all the 4 majors, almost all the other tier I's..it's good.

Sure some Luxembourghs here and there'd be nice, but don't really mean all that much if you've the whole box.

This thread isn't to point out that it's a positive thing. It's obviously a double-edged sword, and shows how well Serena does at the majors AND "shittily" at the rest of the tournaments. Don't be so quick to think this list was necessarily meant to be a positive stat for her. ;) Just shows that Serena "only" wins majors, and how she doesn't win anything else, compared to the rest of the tour. The list shows by how much that is the case.

Obviously Steffi, Chris, and Martina (N.), with their lower percentages, had far more impressive careers.
