It was great seeing her again in the final, cheering on Serena. (to my surprise!) Does anyone know some sort of history she has with the Williams Sisters. I remember watching her in 2001 in the same court against Venus to lose 8-6 in the third!

There was never bad blood.

Amanda's always been involved with SA charities, as is Serena. Plus, I think Zina had something to do with the familiarity as well.

She was sitting in the row above Venus but Venus was still taller when they stood up, which is why I didn't even see her until someone noticed she was there. :sobbing:

I was watching that QF a few days ago, Amanda played so aggressively!

Arnon Milchan(Big shot Hollywood producer and tennis sponsor), who is Amanda's billionaire husband is a major sponsor of Serena and Venus, back in the day when they were still kids, he sponsored them, he is the one who believed in them from the beginning. Once he and Amanda got together, she became really close friends with the Williams family. On top of that I believe Amanda's old coach(not sure what his name was) is helping out with the William sister's tennis game, at least the physical aspect. Also I believe Amanda and Serena are working on the same charity with Arnon. I believe they are all great friends and Amanda was invited to the Australian as a special guest of the Williams family. I remember reading that Amanda and her husband spent a holiday with the Williams, so they must be close.
I wonder if anyone has some pictures from today of Amanda, I did not see her, maybe I have forgotten what she looked like. LOL

When was this?

She was supporting Serena in the Australian Open final, she was in her box cheering.

And the match versus Venus was the Australian Open 2001 QF.

I miss Amanda her game was intense running! I saw some of her matches and she was beating Graf and all the top players which was awesome! Especially for her size!

I think Amanda Coetzer was the shortest player ever in the top 20?. Only 157m and she still had game, she had great court finesse, the Caro Wozniacki's(who is 20 cm taller) of today could learn a thing or two about tennis from people like Amanda.

Well Amanda not only was a pusher but also a moonballer. She had a Wozniacki esque type of game, but i think Caro still hits the ball harder.

I will never forget Usopen 1998 (or Rg 1997 too) when Organizers Scheduled a Conchita Martinez vs Coetzer 4th round match on the staduim, a match that lasted more than 3 hours, tons of moonballs, while on the grand stand there were Mary Pierce and Venus Williams pounding at one another at the same time.

Still for her size Amanda had very great qualities, she ran everything, she had a nice volley as well, but the thing against Amanda was that she needed her oponnent to be off, once the oponnent was on she had very little to counter act that, and she had very few slam runs, only got to 2 grand slam SF those in 1997, that the only year she reached the top ten..

Still great to see her, she looks great, in fact like time has not passed by, good to see, and married :)

Actually I just checked yesterday and Amanda Coetzer made 3 Semifinals(almost beating Huber and Majoli in two of her three semis) and 7 Quarterfinals.
And 97 was not the only year she was in the top 10.
She broke into the top 10 in April of 97 and stayed there till October of 98, broke into top 5 in August of 97 and stayed there till June of 98.
From March of 99 to November of 99 she was also well inside the top 10 again. Than in 2000 she spent nearly all of January in the top 10 as well as nearly all of May.
In 2001 she was in the top 10 again from February till June. So she spent a lot of time in the top 10 from 1997 to 2001.
Amanda Coetzer was also in the top 20 from August of 1992 till October of 2003, she qualified for the year ending championship 10 times and had 570 wins in her career.

Its OK if you didn't like her but check your facts before posting something.
By the way I haven't watched Amanda that many times but the times I remember watching her, which are the 97 Australian Open 4th round win against Graf, 97 Roland Garros Quarterfinal win against Graf and her 2001 Quarterfinal against Venus Williams. Amanda was playing some great tennis, she was hardly a pusher, she had an all court game, great volleys, a nice game at net. She did moon ball quite a bit but she used that to set up the point. She made quite a lot of winners in those three matches. She had a lot of finesse and an amazing drop shot.

I think she was an amazing player for her height.(She was practically a lil person).
Just in 1997 alone, she scored 7 top 5 wins.(Beat both Graf and Hingis).

Some other interesting facts about Amanda, Capped off best year to date on Tour in 1997 by becoming first player to win three Tour awards in same year: Most Improved Player, Diamond ACES, and Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship (also won sportsmanship award in 1995); won 1992 TENNIS Magazine Most Improved Female Player
Is the only player in the history of the game to defeat Graf, Hingis and Davenport while they held the world No.1 ranking

Yup, Berlin, Germany 1997 in front of Steffi's home crowd. 6-0 6-1

1997 - Career-best season, breaking into Top 5, reaching two Grand Slam SF and a career-high No. 3; became one of six players to d. Graf three or more times in a calendar year (alongside Evert, Navratilova, Sabatini, Sanchez-Vicario and Davenport); d. Graf in QF of Australian Open (ending her 45-match Grand Slam win-streak), Berlin (60 61 win in 56 minutes for Grafs worst-ever loss) and Roland Garros, becoming one of just four players to defeat Graf more than once in Grand Slam play since 1987 (alongside Sanchez-Vicario, Navratilova, Seles) All three of her wins were in straight sets.

It was a match I will never ever forget.
It was also windy that day and both players refused to finish off points at the net until Amanda started to force the issue in the 3rd set.

I loved Amanda though. Before Anna Kounikova, it was Amanda that was the hottie on tour.

I wouldn't call Amanda a "pusher" though.
She had some heavy top spin for her time on her forehand when she needed to use it and it worked very well against Graf's slice backhand and against Venus' backhand as well.

It was a sad day when she decided to retire but you could tell it was inevitable once she started playing the small clay tournis in winter.

Coetzer is fuckin awesome.

She probably is such a big "over-achiever" in terms of results, when you look at her size, and playing in such a competitive era IMO. She really carved out a nice niche for herself, and was definitely NOT a pusher. People are ridiculous with this pusher talk - basically, if you don't hit for the lines every shot, and have a ton of power...you're a pusher.

Amanda was fit as hell, knew how to retrieve and maximize her strengths, and was really tenacious. I wouldn't say she needed her opponent to play badly to win at all - she racked up tons of wins against bigger hitters. But against the TOP players, she definitely needed to hope they weren't playing their best.

When I think of Coetzer I think of a threat to Steffi because she knew how to play her and beat her - I'm aware Steffi was struggling physically in 97 but she beat pleanty of good players but Amanda seemed to know how to hurt her. The one match I remember was Amanda against the other human backboard Arantxa on the green clay, no less, of Hilton Head and it lasted something like 3 and a half hours ending up 7-6(12) 3-6 6-3 in Sanchez Vicarios favour but those 2 gave you nothing so when their paths crossed you were in for a long afternoon!

I remember falling in love with her when watching the Eastbourne semi-finals on tv one year ( I think 99) and she played a really long match vs. Tauziat or Zvereva!! Not sure which. It was so dramatic. I would love to see that again.

I just found this on the NY Times website:

Wow! 10-8 final set!
The third-seeded Nathalie Tauziat overcame a 5-1 deficit in the third set and beat Anna Kournikova, 6-4, 4-6, 8-6, yesterday to reach the final of the Eastbourne grass-court tournament in England.
It was the fifth-seeded Kournikova's first defeat at Eastbourne, after she had twice won the under-21 event. Last year she reached the semifinals of the main event by beating Steffi Graf, before defaulting with an injury.
Tauziat will face the sixth-seeded Natasha Zvereva in the final. Zvereva defeated Amanda Coetzer of South Africa, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-4), 10-8, in 3 hours 20 minutes, one of the longest matches in the tournament's history.

The girl was a massive mooballer IMO. When she beat Graf in 97 it was because Graf besides her phisicall problems, she came up with 40 plus unforced errors in straight sets defeats ,

No one asked for your pinion.:help:

Haha maybe i did exaggerate a little with the use of 'legend' but i was a big fan. I wouldn't say she was all about the moonball though! Not compared to someone like Anna Smashnova. She had some variety in her game, quite an effective slice backhand and was a decent volleyer. She was just so small!!
