View Full Version : Can Na Li win the French?

Volcana
Jan 30th, 2010, 05:25 PM
Plusses - She's fast, defends well, has reliable groundes. moves up and widens the court well, the serve is less of an issue.

Minuses - She's got maybe three years before the legs go, Henin's back, and the rest of the tour is going to figure out NOT to hit wide to her backhand.

Her groundies aren't that reliable.

Seems like you're pretty ready to move on from the Serena win ;) .

no....and Henin back isnt a minus IMO.... with her new game it will affect her at RG...... As aggressive as shes trying to be and since she wants to win Wimbledon I'm assuming she'll keep it up on the clay since you only get 2 weeks really between the two tournaments..... Im not sure what Justines chances are at RG, but i think she'll play RG completely different than she has in the past...

And no... Na Li will not win RG......

She is an unforced error machine from time to time and that will eventually kill her on clay before winning 7 matches in a row.

Volcana is way off. I actually picture Zheng better for the regard, and is also off to be true as well..

I mean has Na Li ever given signs of breaking through on clay? :tape:

Na was in German Open SF, where she beat Ivanovic and Schnyder
If Ana can win RG, then so can Na

No. She has never even won a big tournament let alone a slam and her record at the French is not great. However, I am hoping this year she will continue to improve.

She "beat" Ana 1-6 ret. and scraped past Schnyder 2-6 7-6 7-6 before being destroyed 6-1 6-0 by Petrova. Not extraordinarily impressive. And Ana is a far better player on clay than Na, even now.

na cant move on ckay tbh. her groundstroke will be slower on clay.so she just keep at it.
but i hope she will have nice RG.
She have a better shot at wimby and USO

Na Li winning French Open? Not in a million years. Her game doesn't suit clay.

Pretty much agreed. She's one of the most impatient and inconsistent playes in the world. Clay requires patience.

It's funny, despite her error prone game Roland Garros is Li Na's favorite slam. She had said in interviews in the past that her one dream was to play in RG, so I'd imagine she has a real fire for it.

While her game is likely not suited for clay, she has a bit more spin on her shots so she can handle playing dirt ball tennis. People think Zheng's retrieving game is a bit better for clay, but Zheng hits the ball so flat that the clay really doesn't really help her strokes. Sure it helps her retrieve, but then her balls don't do a ton coming off the stuff. Li Na's small record at the French is just a little bit better then Zheng's.

Li Na is moving better this year, and I wouldn't be surprised if she held on to her top 16 seeding at RG. Whether or not she can go one further will be seen.

I wouldn't call her useless though, as she's never lost before the 3R at RG.

......HENIN
......HENIN
......HENIN
......HENIN

is bold favorite in France every year, but I must agree that player with 2nd best chances there is really:

.....ANA-GOAT
..SERENA-GOAT
SVETLANA-GOAT
..SAFINA-GOAT
...ELENA-GOAT
..JELENA-GOAT

If Ana can win RG, then so can NaWe don't need any better proof than that Berlin 2006 epic Na Li beat Ana Ivanovic 1-6 ret. win for this!

This reminds me of Zheng Jie's breakthrough in 2004 (?), making the R16 of RG. It's quite a puzzle. She shouldn't be used to moving on clay + her flat strokes don't penetrate on the surface.

Would be nice, but I don't think so.

Na doesn't have enough patience to win a GS on clay.

That's pretty much how I feel - She's by no means useless on clay, or any other surface for that matter, she's actually had decent results on clay. But she's definitely far too inconsistent to be a contender at Roland Garros, you just never know which Li is going to show up from one match to the next.

LoL No. Her game isn't suited for clay, especially with her footwork.

What is this, a joke? Na has almost no chance whatsoever. IMO, only Justine and Kim can win. Serena isn't the same player on clay, but it's still possible. Safina, Jankovic, Ivanovic and Kuznetsova can if they have their heads together.

Everybody can win RG also Dulgheru, Mayr, O´Brien...but they need a LOT of luck:spit:

Jan 31st, 2010, 07:23 AM
Oh lord, the AO is probably her best surface.
She's too loose on the errors, if she cuts the errors out of her game then she'll be a far better player.

flyingmachine
Jan 31st, 2010, 08:12 AM
Are you serious? :spit: I think her best surface is still the hardcourt. She doesn't have the patenice or the defensive skill to win at clay. Especially now that the Belgians are back who both are very good at clay some of the Russians like Elena, and Sveta who also very good at clay and Serena still hanging around. No chance.

Jan 31st, 2010, 04:13 PM
No way.I saw her play sharapova last year and what I can remember is that she doesnt have a typical claycourt game.Very far to be honest.:o
She will be defeated by good claycourter for sure.

Mikey.
Jan 31st, 2010, 04:29 PM
She kinda has that spinny game which would be suited to clay and the slow and higher bounces allow her time to get set up for her shots. However she doesn't really have the patience to last out the long rallies on clay and she just makes too many errors. I think it's the same situation as Stosur on clay. She has the tools but not the mentality or consistency for clay. So she may have a few deep runs on it but always eventually lose to a better clay courter.
