Kind of a victory for Vee too, huh.

Oh quit whining. You're taking this WAAAAY too serious. I was having fun. Shit, J, reel it in a bit.

I think BOTH Venus and Serena were very conscious of what a Justine victory would have done to her slam count. I agree with the poster who said Serena, I'm sure, wanted to prevent Justine from winning damn near as much for Vee as for herself.

And is it soooo inconceivable that Venus would be happy about that????!! I don't think it tarnishes the integrity of Saint Vee.

I have to admit, I have to give it up for Venus. She's pure class. She knew that a win for Serena today would ensure that she would always remain ahead of her in the Slams count and that she'd always be in Serena's shadow, but she still cheered for her anyway. I doubt it would be that way if the roles were reversed... although that selfish streak in Serena itself is probably what has made her the better player.

Graf has 22.
Are you forgetting Navratilova and Evert at 18? Amelie. And BJK you forgot.
I bet venus doesnt even know how many slams she's won

:spit:. Oh lordie, that made me laugh. Back to this thread, Venus being happy that Justine didn't overtake her? Venus just tied Justine at 2008 Wimbledon, so if she couldn't capitalize on her chances to overtake Justine, that's her own fault, Justine tried to already overtake Venus in her 2nd event back. Venus needs to focus on Venus, not Justine. Venus needs to focus on herself winning slams rather than Justine passing her. Though, I don't think this was the reason Venus was happy. Serena tied BJK, Venus naturally was happy for her sister.

She was definetely more demosntrative and engaged than I have seen here in the past.

I don't know the reason, but since her loss to Na Li, she has been enthused.
She carried the load in the double final.
She was much more alert( at the net) and atumed than in her Na LI match.

I remember when Serena beat Venus in the 2009 Wimbledon final and some Justine posters were like "Thank you Serena for making sure Venus never passed Justine in the slam count".

So, thank you Serena for not letting Justine pass Venus in the slam count. Although Venus should really do that herself by winning some more.

Oh GET OVER YOURSELF!! Venus leaves in the moment-- I doubt Justine passing her in slam count was on her mind. She is always happy for her sister when watching from the stands. The only time she looked miserable and rightly so , was the US Open final '99. She suffered a tough loss to Hingis, and obviously it was difficult for her to get over. But, seriously, get over YOURSELF if you seriously can't understand the spirit in which this thread was created. Nobody was picking on Vee. WTF is wrong with you. :help:

For the life of me, I can't understand why some of you would think Venus doesn't care about her legacy or slam count. Is that the excuse we Venus fans are expected to make now a days. "Oh well, Venus doesn't really care so much so...," that's bitter and foolish.

Is it so inconceivable that Serena would PROTECT her big sisters slam count?

Is it so inconceivable that Serena would do Venus a favor?

Is it so inconceivable that the Williams would see this as defending a bit of family honor?

Do you dislike Serena that much to believe she's incapable of feeling protective of her big sister?

I know the intention of this thread is a little tongue-in-cheek and a good-natured outreach to the Venus fans. It's nothing to get het up about. But it does raise an interesting question.

It's all subjective and it's really easy to project (I could be doing that here too). But from what I saw, Venus looked suitably/'appropriately' happy to me (in between some thoughtful or anxious moments during the match) but I didn't see her look wildly ecstatic or relieved over the win. (I did see a great deal of relief on Serena's face however.)

She really doesn't seem to be measuring herself against Justine or even Serena, though clearly, the history books will whether she likes it or not. But I'm not sure how much her mind is even on tennis anymore. Maybe that's her way of taking the pressure off, or maybe that's just how she is. (Individuals like that are uncommon, but there are people who genuinely don't measure themselves against other people's accomplishments.) And that's the Venus enigma to me. She looked utterly beautiful in the stands last night and is clearly one of those people that is content with herself.

On top of that, Venus isn't the one with an intense rivalry with Justine, or a somewhat bitter history. (Again, I suspect that she doesn't think much about Justine either way.) I sometimes wish that Vee was a little less dreamy/complacent and more ambitious about her slam count, but that's how it is. Don't get me wrong - I think she'd be thrilled if she won more slams, but I don't think she would would be unhappy or crushed if she didn't. What her fans want for her is immaterial to her own goals, whatever they be.

She's trailed Hingis, Justine, Serena in the slam count and has never seemed to be overly worried at any of those points either.

Well Venus may be happy for now but outside of Wimbledon she doesn't seem to have much of a shot to win another major. So while she may be smiling now (if that was the case) and as much as I love Venus,I think its only a matter of time before Henin surpasses Venus' singles major count. Henin should have the French Open on lock and if she's playing until 2012 that could be at least 3 more titles there.
