Did you see Oracene and Venus cheering and nodding for Justine during the trophy ceremony, especially when the guy welcomed Justine back and said good luck for the rest of her career. Venus was nodding her head and demonstrated why I love her :worship:

And Serena's congratulations for Justine. :)

I really think the whole feel of the Justine-Serena rivalry just feels much more dignified.

I think they've both matured. Its less snarky now.

Well, someone has to keep Serena on her toes after Venus retires this year, might as well be Justine.

I actually was really proud seeing Justine and Serena standing side-by-side like that - two great champions. And it's fitting that only they managed to break the three-set jinx.

Couldn't agree more. I love Serena to DEATH make no mistake but i am sometimes put off by some of the comments she has made in the past vis a vis not giving her opponents enough credit. It seems to me that Serena is gone. It's safe to say there won't be any 'she won madrid' moments and good for you Serena. I probably would have loved you still but now i love you more. I never wanna miss an opportunity to love Serena more. Love all the Billie Jean talk with Mary Jo after the trophy ceremony. Very classy. FUCKING LOVE IT! Now,if Murray beats Federer, i can die.

Even in the loss, Justine showed why she is an amazing champion. She will win more. I mean hell it was her second tournament back and she pushed Serena to 3 sets!

Serena was very generous.

Unfortunately, after some of the nice words Juju had for her the past couple of days she was decidedly terse with in her congratulations of Serena tonight. More so than necessary, imo.

I think she said something like, "Congratulations Serena. You are a REAL champion." She couldn't say more because the crowd was already cheering. But I understand what you mean. I think it may have been just a little disappointment. But I think the respect for each other is definitely there, and that excites me.

I think they recognize each other now as once-in-a-generation talents and competitors. Also, they both know firsthand the mental and physical costs of this sport. Both have "gone away" from the sport for a period and are back. That requires a lot.

(But they could also be killing each other with kindness. A la Nadal camp re: Federer. Still produced great matches, which is what we want!)

Very nice of the Williams box. Shows that they do know that Justine might be their biggest, truest rival and respect her a lot. Reminds me of their battles with Hingis. They had such different styles, but they knew that Martina was a great player who was never to be taken lightly.

Oracene is one cool momma! She is always very fair in applauding her daughters' opponents.

I *did* think Justine was rather brief in her congratulations to Serena, although she did look very disappointed. However, it was sort of funny that in Serena's rambling speech, almost forgetting to thank the sponsors etc, it was HER who gave a shout out to the Belgian fans! LOL!
I think the way they praised each other before the final was refreshing and having just read the post match interviews, there were no sour grapes from anyone. Justine rightly acknowledged the importance of Serena saving the 1-0 final set game from 15-40 down and Serena acknowledging her serve was key to the win.

Very classy from the Williams family. It's about mutual respect between great champions, like Navratilova-Evert,Graf-Seles et al.

I also think Serena will be delighted to have beaten Justine in one of her GS finals at long last - it seems ridiculous that they have not met before on such an occasion.

Women's tennis is back with a vengeance!!!
