Anna/Meghan team defaulted. We'll know more later, I guess. I think it is probably Meghann. She played very tough singles match, and she has to save herself for a singles tomorrow match.

The explanation for Meghann makes no sense, her and Anna just blew through the 2nd set, so I don't see why she would retire because of exhaustion.

Whatever the reason and whoever retired I hope it's not serious.

Yak
Oct 2nd, 2002, 06:38 PM
But I agree with Janie...

It has to be either Nadia or Jelena because they've just lost the set 6-1...

It cold be Anna. Tomorrow's schedule should be up by now and if she is supposed to play tomorrow, they would have to do some reshuffling, which would delay the posting of tomorrow's schedule.

Dawn Marie
Oct 2nd, 2002, 06:44 PM
Whoever it is I think they must have tweaked something and wants to play it safe for the next match. I don't think they would retire due to being tired only. I don't think it Dokic she has no matches to play.

This is a toss-up because all 4 have been so injury prone in the last year. I think its Anna or Meghan.

GET REAL, people !

If it is indeed a sprained ankle - she can forget tomorrows match. Sprained ankles don't "heal" overnight !

Especially if you had as many foot and ankle injuries as Anna in that age as a full time pro player.

ALWAYS the same for Anna - it's always the same. :fiery:

CellJr300
Oct 2nd, 2002, 07:08 PM
But they aren't sure it is a sprained ankle. If they re-evaluate her tomorrow, and it is found to be sprained, then she will not play, and will most likely have to take more time off. As of right now though, we don't know whether or not it is actually a sprain. That is most likely just an after-match judgement, and sometimes those can be wrong, we will just have to wait and see.

Yak
Oct 2nd, 2002, 07:08 PM
I agree with ALPHA!!!

It's 97% certain that she won't play tomorrow! She's had just too many of that kind of injury so...forget tomorrow's match:sad:

I have to cheer for Nadia now...

If her sprain was anything like Serena's earlier in the year, I think she is doubtful for tomorrow's match also.

From the Kremlin Cup website:

02.10.02 Anna Kournikova who was playing in doubles with the American Megann Shaugnessy withdrew from the doubles competition due to a sprain left ankle - an injury she received today during the doubles match vs. Yelena Dokic and Nadejda Petrova. The decision as to whether she will continue playing in singles will be taken tomorrow.

Kournikova retires from doubles with ankle injury

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Anna Kournikova withdrew from her Kremlin Cup quarter-final doubles match after spraining her left ankle.

After losing the first set 6-4 to Yugoslav Jelena Dokic and Nadia Petrova of Russia, Kournikova, partnering American Meghann Shaughnessy, twisted her ankle in the sixth game of the second set while leading 5-1.

The Russian received treatment and was able to continue as the second seeds levelled by taking the second set 6-1 before the 21-year-old retired at the start of the final set.

A WTA spokesperson told Reuters that Kournikova, who was given a wild card into the tournament, will decide on Thursday morning if she will play her second round singles match against Petrova.

Poor Anna - oh well at least it is only a sprain. It could have been a lot worse like the dreaded stress fractures!

Kournikova injured again at Kremlin

MOSCOW (AP) - Anna Kournikova retired from her doubles match at the Kremlin Cup on Wednesday after spraining her left ankle.

Kournikova was sidelined most of last season because of a stress fracture in the same ankle.

Kournikova and American Meghann Shaughnessy were tied with Jelena Dokic and Nadia Petrova after two sets when Kournikova injured her ankle and retired.

There was a 50-percent chance Kournikova would compete in her second-round match against Petrova on Thursday, according to the WTA injury report.

*Fingers crossed*
