I think the top5 chackvetadze we've seen actually comes the closest yeah. Her way of striking looked almost as effortless as martina then. I really don't think anyone else is comparable to be honest.

No one.

But out of this list, Pennetta.Agree. But especially with the 'no one'.

Hingis induced errors. She got people to hit to the area of the court she WANTED them to hit to. Usually without them realizing that they were doing what she wanted. That's what made her game seem so ... cruel .... in 1997-8. She was toying with people. Venus, in the 1997 US Open final, had absolutely no idea what she was facing.

Facing Hingis was like going into a boxing match, and finding out that not only was Hingis not wearing gloves, she had a knife. But she was small and seemed weak, and the ref seemed to feel sorry for her. And she laughed while she cut you to ribbons.

There's no one on tour that mentally superior now. Hingis WAS smaller and weaker and slower. And she won five slam singles titles, and slam doubles titles with FOUR different partners, a couple of whom never won one without her. She was THAT much smarter.

Volcana
Jan 29th, 2010, 06:03 AM
The stereotypic Hingis shot circa '97 looked like something the opponent could kill, but right after they hit it, they looked up to see Hingis already in position, at the net, waiting for it, laughing.

Have you ever seen either Radwanska, or either Woz, or for that matter either Bondareko EVER hit that kind of shot? (In farness, Patty Schnyder, once in a blue moon, actually constructed those kinds of points.) The closet thing to Hingis, and she's far, FAR away, is Henin. And after that it's Serena. Nobody else gets that far ahead in points.

Forget the 2001-2002, trying to hang on to her ranking with chronic foot injuries Hingis. Take the 1997-1999, pulling the wings off flies Hingis. She would have laughed at Wozniacki and Radwandska. In fact, she probably would have laughed at them DURING MATCHES. And in the press conference, she'd apologize.

"I'm sorry. But she wasn't very good."

Who had that great line about Nasty and Hingis?

"Myskina returns all your shots. Hingis make you return hers." Or something like that. Brilliant line, concise analysis of what made Nastya a near-great and Hingis a great player. Although none of today's players can match Nastya's ability to hit great junk.

(For nonAmericans, "junk" in this case isn't derogatory--it's a baseball term referring to a pitcher who doesn't have great velocity on his pitches, but uses placement and variety of speeds to confuse a batter. The pitches look like "junk" but they're all actually strikes and harder to hit than they ought to be).

Why this is stuborn quest to find someone who plays like Hingis?

This is only one of many that have made such attempts.

Hingis is unique.
Her anticipiation, ability to force opponent to do what hey don't want to, her variety of shots, ability to change her mind in a split second.

It seems to me, the problem here is that, when making this comparison, people tend to remember the Hingis who came from retirrment(Hings II), not the Hingis before(Hingis I).

Well, Hingis II is nothing like Hingis I.

Hingis II is an ordianary player.
Hingis I was a prodigy.

While Hingis II still has the mind of Hingis I, she lacks the ability to execute what her minds tells her to do. Her body cannot respond to her command anymore.
This has given the false impression that there is a player who can emulate Hingis.

Oh comeon, the OP posted this thread to glorify Aga Rad who he thinks is the closest to Martina Hingis. If you already have an answer in your mind, why bother posting a thread? Even if 9127371625736129 people say its Anna Chakvetadze or Player X, in your heart and mind it'll always be Aga Rad.

this

this thread and poll is exactly that, an attempt but the OP to link aga to martina in a way that would ordinarily be laughable... how else do you explain putting caro wozniacki (that is an insult to martina on so many levels) and a dual choice of pennetta/schnyder (that doesn't make any sense, and the only similarity between martina and patty is that they're both swiss) in the poll... what a joke....

please give up these comparisons, hingis is a legend, no one is like her...
