View Full Version : Can Maria Sharapova truly regain form?

I have heard a lot of people talking about her lately. She has been compared to Jennifer Capriati injury wise. The difference is or at least what some people think is that Capriati really wanted to return to the game but she did not want to constantly lose at events she could make a deep run at or even win before her shoulder problems. I can sort of understand this because if you are use to been able to give it your all win or lose to be a champion it is hard to imagine how it can make a person feel when their body will not allow them to.

Many people feel that Sharapova is experiencing the same situation. But the difference is that she has a lot of sponsors & obligations that tie her to tennis still. In other words in order to keep making the money she has to play and be seen on the tour at a certain number of events at least. Though I believe both truly love the game of tennis just as Capriati did not come back because she was no longer the same player it is hard to believe that Sharapova enjoys playing when she is losing more than she ever has & also to leave a grandslam which is one of her favorite tournaments in the 1st round.

They were talking to a lot of athletes that have suffered the same shoulder injury & they all said that their game was never the same again because it messes up your natural feel. In other words you have a tendancy to throw the ball futher or shorter than your target. Which causes you to be off. You can see your target but you just don't have the natural feel for it anymore.

A lot of people feel that because of her injury she is no longer a top tier player, many have went on to say that she is a average player now because she does not have anything to fall back on. In other words she lacks variety and her movement is not fast enough to help her balance out the lack of feel for the court. The more I read the more I came to the see that they had some very valid points. The thing that I said would confirm a lot of these things for me was if she lost in the 1st rd of a slam & that is exactly what she has done.

What do you think? Do you think that Maria Sharapova will ever be a favorite again from her tennis play again or will she only be a favorite in name only & where she has been?

She, like Venus, needs to see a sports psychologist.

Next.

It's ridiculous to be writing her off at this point. She's been underperforming at the Slams, yes, but she still collected a lot of quality wins at the WTA events last year - I mean, you don't beat Azarenka twice if you're "done".
And considering she's still got a few months with no points to defend, the smart money's on her being back in the top 10 by the time the clay-court season gets going.

I'm not going to say I'm 100% confident she'll get back to exactly where she was, and I'm really don't know if she'll win a Slam again. But I do absolutely think she'll atleast be one of the top players for a good few years yet.

I thought Nadia was finished as a top 10 singles player last spring. She was moving so slowly. And she was born in 82. Nadia's movement was shocking this AO.

Maria was born in 87. No one knows how it will turn out, and it's not only the rotator cuff.
She has to get her whole game stabilized.
Not impossible.

OMG! Of course she can.

She'll be back bigger and better.

another thread about this baby clown, joke, cocktail waitress.

She never had any sort form. She was never a good tennis *player*. She doesnt have any clue what to do on court. She doesnt have any instinct particular to the game. She never care about winning.

She's the biggest myth, and joke tennis has ever had.

She cant regain anything, because she had NOTHING going for her (except smiling photo shoot in fashion magazine):wavey:

So basically you are saying an:

Overrated, joke, non instinct, no form Sharapova >>> Dementieva :lol::lol: You dissed your own girl without knowing it. How rich.

3 Grand Slams doesn't lie. What a shame. :wavey: I wish I had nothing going for and was basically the richest female athlete in the world. Sucks to be her.

Yes, it might take some time though. Just like Venus she needs to learn to close out matches again.

Her determination and fighting spirit are a big plus--sometimes it goes awol, but for the most part it's one of the best features of her game. I don't really know about the shoulder thing--only Maria can say.

She's rich because of her little smiles and showing skin at tv commercials. Only for her tennis, she will be bankrupt many times and leaving in a south beach shack downtown.

She mades money the wrong way. She doesnt work, she doesnt deserve that type of money. What a failure, i feel sorry for her

Explain the 3 slams and #1 ranking then. Can't wait to see what's coming :tape:

It's been less than a year since she's made her comeback.
Most injuries like hers take more than a year to fully heal. And not only does her shoulder have to heal, but her confidence too, and her serve of course..
So yes, she'll regain form. She's still young. She still wants it.

Sharapova is very similar to both Venus and Serena - when she doesn't have her serve going the rest of her game kind of just falls apart. She'll be back. She needs to work through the yips and that'll be done with. She's so much more powerful than 90% of the girls on tour that even without her serve she can rack up some quality wins - I mean who needs a serve in women's tennis anyway?

I don't think she can win a Slam until she gets back to Australian Open 2008-level (which was ridiculous) BUT I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of the year she's back in the Top 10.
