I wonder if she'l pull out at the last minute? It kind of shows she's not really taking Charleston that seriously though  No wonder she hasn't been updating her twitter

She obviously hasn't been able to train with her injury because she'l be going onto the green clay with no practice on the surface at all, but she could have at least flown over a few days early to adjust to the time difference :( Whatever happens she'd better not go over there just to tank to someone like McHale in R2 :help:

I don't get it either.

Normally she should be able to beat McHale with one hand tied behind her back, but who knows what will happen considering the current situation?

Hard to imagine Vika tanking a match...

If she's pulling out, it will be at the very last minute.

She better do well there, she made her path to a #8 seeding much more difficult by playing Marbella/coming here.

As I said in some other thread a few months ago, I think we'll see more and more players who aren't 100% turning up and then losing by retirement or not giving full effort performances with the current rules on committing to tournaments. Vika .

Azarenka, who drove herself to the media tent in a golf cart thingamajiggy, says she has a “pulled hamstring”. Will play Stuttgart next.

Tweeted by bobbychin who is in Charleston right now. :scared:

HowardH
Apr 14th, 2010, 07:37 PM
Hamstrings take time to heal. Sounds like she has a level 1 pull, which is the mildest, but also tends to be the most chronic, essentially because it doesn't feel as bad as a level 2 (difficulty walking). Everyone tends not to give mildly pulled hamstrings enough time to recover, and they therefore keep re-injuring it. Vika needs to seriously rehab and make sure she is actually ready to play.

allrounder
Apr 14th, 2010, 07:58 PM
Yeah i'd be surprised if a pulled hamstring is healed before Stuttgart. She should maybe just withdraw now and make sure she's ok for Rome or Madrid. Unless she was more or less forced to play in Charleston it makes no sense why she risked aggravting an injury that wasn't fully healed because it's just not like her at all, i mean she pulled out of 4 tournaments last season with minor injuries

Break My Rapture

hurricanejeanne
Apr 14th, 2010, 11:22 PM
I have to agree, this whole thing of playing Charleston sounds like Vika more or less had to "play" the event so she could avoid getting fined. I don't like her even attempting to play on this kind of injury, it's just silly. I just hope she takes the time to get healthy before her next event, though I agree she should sit it out until Roma/Madrid.

Stupid WTA rules.

Even if she hadn't gotten injured last week, the whole Miami-Marbella-Charleston-Stuttgart road trip never made a whole lot of sense to start with.

Latest from Twitter, posted about 4 hours ago:

hello everyone!i had to retire from my match today, because of my injury i got in marbella! too bad i didnt have enough time to get it better

tried to do everything possible, but unfortunately i couldnt do anything..im going back to europe now to continue treatment and hopefully

i will be ready very soon!

now from the internet i read some nasty things about me and my match today! specially from my own country! its a shame..so for people

who think i tanked the match or whatever they certainly dont have a fucking clue what they talking about...and rules of wta tour

thanks for the support guys! Love U
Vika :awww::hug:

It must be really sad to read that kind of crap from the media, especially when it's coming from your native country (and it's not the first time this year she's come under fire from some Belarusian media). A few egomaniacs in GM thought she was actually referring to TennisForum. :spit:

Makes it pretty clear that she only played to avoid being penalized.

duh, so explain your side then?? You were 6-2 2-0 up, but your ''people'' were still laying bets against you at crazy odds.... then Mchale gets it back to 2-2 and you give up? The commentator said nothing was wrong with you.

It's not the first time something strange like this has happened with you. You're a disgrace to the sport and should be banned from WTA

She was never even 2-0 up in the second set at any stage  Don't a lot of the betting sites void bets if the match ends in a retirement? I like how the person said it's not the first time this has happened as if she's the only player that's ever retired whilst in a good position and of course it's totally unreasonable to think she may actually be genuinely injured :help:

This tank business is bullshit.. it was widely known that she went into the match carrying an injury. If she hadn't been injured I doubt McHale would have even won 4 games. If Vika is injured and can't continue, what is she supposed to do?

allrounder
Apr 15th, 2010, 06:47 PM
It seems like the master logic is if you're winning easily and retire it's automatically a tank because it's impossible to get injured if you're winning  I don't even think anyone on TF was calling it a tank although i see a couple of WUM's in GM are now trying to have their fun

Nicely put.

These people and their ridiculous accusations. And I don't care what betting companies say, by definition they're immoral and are trying to make as much money as they can off poor greedy sobs, so of course they will make a lot of excuses to not have to pay out if they can.

People bet on Vika losing cos she was injured. Simple as that. Nothing underhand from Vika. I can't stand how people dare to slander players' characters in this kind of situation. I guess the people who make these accusations aren't good at judging a player's character. I've seen a lot of Vika, and she absolutely tries her best to win every match- if she retires it's because her body is not up to the challenge on that day, that's all. Those accusations of Nikolay were silly too- he's like Vika, no one tries harder to win on the tour than these two (except for maybe Rafa and Caro).

Spiritof42
Apr 15th, 2010, 08:53 PM
This reminds me of the match-fixing bullsh*t that came up after Wozniacki retired in Luxembourg last year (except that Caro was up 7-5 5-0 ).
It died down pretty quickly. Let's hope it's the same here. I get annoyed whenever online gamblers or betting sites try to take the moral high ground in a situation like this. :tape:

Just saw this on Tennis.com:

Vika Dropping F-Bombs On Twitter
Daily Spin April 15, 2010

Call Victoria Azarenka a quitter at your own peril. "[Those] who think i tanked the match or whatever they certainly dont have a f------ clue what they talking about...and rules of wta tour," the world No. 9 tweeted (without the dashes) after retiring from a Family Circle Cup match with a hamstring injury. Azarenka, who was leading her opponent Christina McHale 6-2, 2-2 when she called it a day, sustained the original injury last week in Marbella, Spain. We’re guessing the foul language won't sit well with the higher-ups at the WTA, but give Azarenka extra credit for being that fired up about a match in Charleston.

—Tom Perrotta

Source (http://www.tennis.com/articles/templates/thespin.aspx?articleid=4967&zoneid=32)

 It's not like she dropped the so-called "f-bomb" during a press conference or anything like that (and why the plural in the title? She only used the word once). Didn't Kuznetsova post something like "F*ck haters" on Twitter one time? Sites like Twitter are first and foremost about posting what's on your mind. You have to accept them for that they are. Personally, I think it's very interesting to be able to get players' raw thoughts and reactions without any editing or filtering from the PR people.

Wow Vika used a swearword :worship: It must be a really slow news day for these bloggers  No action was taken against Woz even when her father gave an accidental tip-off to the world so it's highly unlikely any investigation will be taken here either IMO, or if it was surely an MRI scan to Vika's hamstring would quickly kill it. It's hardly rocket science is it that there was a good chance that she'd retire, most of us on here thought there was no way that hamstring would have recovered since Marbella with a transatlantic flight involved too so i'm not surprised if an unusual amount of people felt like backing Mchale before and during the match. The WTA need to sort out the roadmap top 10er rules ASAP.

People are stupid, if they actually paid attention to the sport they would have known that Vika came into the Charleston with a pretty serious injury and had to retire when it started to hurt her badly again. And she gets major credit from me for calling out the Tour for their absolutely stupid Roadkill rules.
And I really doubt anything will come of these tanking/betting crap.

Naturally, as soon as one moron (the gossip writer for Tennis.com) made a "story" out of Vika swearing on Twitter, another moron (the tennis columnist for Yahoo) was bound to read the first piece and add to the stink:

http://sports.yahoo.com/tennis/blog/busted_racquet/post/Victoria-Azarenka-curses-out-her-doubters-on-Twi?urn=ten,234545

One part made me laugh out loud:

The weird thing is that I just spent way too much time reading Belarusian news sites and searching Twitter and barely have seen a critical word about the match. Her native Web sites didn't even mention the retirement and fan reaction has been almost universally supportive on Twitter. Seems like we can add thin skin to the list of Vika's current ailments.

:spit: This coming from Chris Chase, a guy who in all likelihood can't understand a word of Russian, let alone Belarusian? What "native Web sites" did he read for his highly scientific investigation? The handful that are available in English? Unless he used one of those highly reliable online translators? And yet here he is, thinking he's entitled to admonish Vika for being oversensitive. :weirdo:

And of course, he had to finish by taking yet another uncalled-for swipe at Serena Williams.

Unless there's a change in the wind and weather patterns, air travel in northern Europe will probably continue to be affected for several days. And who knows for how long that volcano will keep spewing ash into the atmosphere? :help: It's a good thing there's no WTA tournament next week.

It could have been worse, though: in 1783, a truly catastrophic eruption (about 100 times stronger than the current one) had a major impact not only on Iceland, but on the British Isles and the whole of northwestern continental Europe as well. Read more about it here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8624791.stm) if interested.

BTW: Vika is finally leading a poll (http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=406654) on GM - Worst grunt! ;)
Her grunt has never bothered me though...

She just said she was going to be rehabbing and practicing in Paris. She also said in a video that Stuttgart's one of her favourite tourneys, so she'l probably try her hardest to be fit for it :scared:

Grunting's never really bothered me much either - it's just part of the sport  I'm usually too into the matches to even notice it's there anyway.

Back when I started watching tennis (that would be during the late Jurassic, otherwise known at the Eighties), "grunting" as it is done today had not yet become fashionable (or even acceptable). So when it burst onto the scene some years later, I'll admit I found the noise coming from the likes of Monica Seles rather annoying at first. But I got used to it eventually, and only a few "grunters" bother me these days.

I've never had any problem with Vika's particular brand of noise-making, though I can understand why some people dislike it. To me, it's actually kind of cute, almost comical at times.

With Vika's luck she'l probably end up with a draw something like this :help:

R1 Henin
R2 MJMS

I don't want any of those near her in the draw. I'm kind of hoping she doesn't get Ivanovic early either because she tends to play better on clay than other surfaces.

I don't think Vika's ever played Pennetta before so it'l be an interesting matchup. Now that Clijsters is out for a while it does at least make Vika's top 10 place more secure providing she can actually win a few matches during the clay season and isn't going to keep retiring or playing with an injury :weirdo: She'l probably still fallout of the top 10 though after Rome unless she does well here in Stuttgart and there.

It was overall a very good performance that certainly exceeded my expectations. But I was still nervous as hell during the match, even when she was up 5-1 (all those BPs and SPs wasted, plus the fact I was afraid her leg might start acting up again at any moment). I actually stopped watching when she got broken for the second time in the second set, and when I came back they were shaking hands. Now I'm going to download the match and enjoy it properly. :)

Back to the livescores for the next round :(
I just *knew* they were not going to put her on CC twice in a row. :( This really sucks (I've never seen Lapushchenkova play, and I'm curious), but it's hard to see Vika losing this one (as long as her body holds up).

Hmm, looking at the stats it seems Vika was doing particularly poorly on serve. Winning only 3 of 20 points on second serve must mean Lapushchenkova was being aggressive on return and also that Vika's second serves were particularly weak. Had higher first serve percentage than her opponent, 69% versus 52%, as she almost always does, but it didn't help her at all.

I find it hard to believe too. Sure, she's had a good run in the ITF minor leagues recently (those tournaments were not played on clay, however), and winning 15 matches in a row must have given her some confidence, but she's never done anything of note at the WTA level. Her record on clay last year was abysmal, and Stuttgart is only her second tournament on clay this year (she lost in the first round of qualifications in Barcelona). She was double-bageled by Stephanie Foretz earlier this year (and by Rybarikova last year) and has lost 0 and 1 to Meusburger. :tape: And yet Vika gets thrashed by this journeywoman. :help:

Vika can have bad days on serve (I thought she was pretty solid against Pennetta, though), but it looks like she had a bad day on return too. I wonder what she'll have to say about this match.

And you're right, this was indeed a golden opportunity to collect some much-needed points.

I'd say give it until after Rome/Madrid/RG and maybe even Eastbourne and Wimbledon to know if Vika's slumping. The quality of tennis she played against Pennetta was hardly what you'd expect from a slumping player

Did not see this coming..every time I come to this town Vika always loses..it's like 6 in a row  I wonder what was wrong..couldnt be the injury since she demolished Flavia yesterday..unless she got reinjured.

Vika's draw at Rome:
R1: Q
R2: Ivanovic/Vesnina
R3: Dementieva
QF: Safina/Petrova
SF: A. Radwanska/Wozniacki
F: S. Williams/Jankovic/V. Williams/Kuznetsova

Can you imagine winning a title beating the following players:
Ivanovic, Dementieva, Safina, Wozniacki and S. Williams? That's possibly no. 3, 2 and 1 in a row :p

Anyway, the draw is actually okay, the best players are in the top half. She avoided Zvonareva, Serena and Venus. However, Dementieva in the 3rd round could be very difficult, but let's take one match at the time :)

I've always thought that it was the reverse: Sex is bad for male athletes before big matches/games but doesn't have much effect on female athletes.

Someone should ask one of these players this question sometime. :p

Usually I get tired and slow after I disgrace myself in the shower.

That's because when you ejaculate you release something inside your body that makes you sleepy. That's also the reason men fall asleep after sex and aren't that inclined to cuddle :p

It's not like they are supposed to have sex 5 minutes before the match but I could imagine that the sleep you get after sex (which is better) makes you more fresh and energetic the next day, maybe even more motivated. This better sleep could well be explained in the thing you get released in your body when ejaculating.

I think that's quite enough information on that particular topic, thank you very much.
Especially considering this is the Vika cheering thread, not the "anything goes" chat thread.

And for what it's worth, the fact that Vika has been seen watching Gulbis matches doesn't have to mean they're a couple. Aren't they supposed to be friends? And doesn't she already have a boyfriend?
Although even then I suppose it's possible that Gulbis would be interested in getting to "know" her in the Biblical sense of the word.
