Vika lost to Kim 6-4, 6-0

Not a pretty match from Vika :o

Quite a bit of points lost in these 2 tourneys so a good clay season is needed..

She never seemed to recover after she was broken back in the first set and played as bad as i've ever seen her :( Having said that though the wind did ruin the match quite a bit but Kim adjusted pretty well after a while so Vika should have been able to too.

When she was on a certain change over she kept hitting the racket on the ground and some other time too in the 2nd set [...] the comedia dell'arte attitude starts to be boring - Its hard to use conditions for an excuse because windy conditions were for both an kim adapted herself. :sad:

Did she lose a point because she already had the bad word warning?

Embarrassing display from Vika in the second set, and a very unfortunate way to exit the tournament for the defending champ. :o

It seemed to me she had pretty much already given up at 0-3. The overall vibe I was getting from her at that point was "screw this, nothing's going my way tonight, I'm outta here". I predicted a bagel, and unfortunately I was right. I also expected her to double fault on match point, and she did. The wind, the crowd, Clijsters's superior defense, all those points she probably felt like she should have won but didn't because she failed to put away a smash or a volley... those things got to her, and she completely lost her focus (and any lingering belief she could still turn the match around).

Mentally, this feels like a major setback. For me, it's not so much about not having punctual temper tantrums, like smashing a racket or cursing out loud. Even Serena Williams does that (occasionally), and sometimes letting off a bit of steam can help. It's about not allowing negative emotions to affect your desire to compete, not letting yourself down with a defeatist mindset when things aren't going your way.

I wish I could erase this match from my memory. Or pretend it never happened.

Oh well. Life goes on. At least Caroline won. ;)

And what's with the Kim hate? :o.
It's just that the crowd was firmly in Clijsters's corner from the very first point. As a Vika fan, hearing a return of serve error get more applause than a spectacular winner coming at the end of a long rally gets annoying after a while. Not Kim's fault, of course, but it's pretty common for people to transfer their resentment of a partisan crowd to the player who just beat their fave. :lol:

Clijsters got more support than Venus today, and she's not even American.

That was one of the most ugly sets that I've seen.
I had nightmares after the game, dreamed that Vika started to cry and then she got crazy and broke all of her racquets smashing them. But it was a dream, cause she broke something near 20 racquets.

:sad: Bad play in the second set.
But yeah, ofcourse Vika gets Kim, who was back to great form this week.
I don't wanna hear any other fan complaining about their faves' bad draws anymore, if anyone has the most unlucky draws then it's Vika, by far. How many times did Vika get the eventual champion ? And I'm sure this one will be the same as well, as I think Clijsters will win this tournament if she keeps this level up.

But now, onto Marbella, #1 seed. I'm expecting her to draw Chaky in R1, one of my other fave players.

Lena D fans may disagree :lol: but Vika has had even tougher draws than her since Wimby last year and when all the comebacks started. If Serena hadn't withdrawn here Vika would have had Henin first match because she'd have been the 5th seed :eek:

The Marbella entry list is here BTW http://www.andaluciatennis.com/files/jugadoras_inscritas_cuadro_principal.pdf

Could somebody help me please ... I 'm a little confused with the rules ... Vika's playing Marbella, right? Must she play at least 1 International tournament a year or not? I mean she just wanted to play there or is there the rule that a tennis player must play at least 1 Internationl tournament? Is Marbella her obligatory tournament?

Andreas
Mar 30th, 2010, 08:26 PM
The players in top 10 have the option to play 1 International tournament before Wimbledon and 1 after. No more than that, but they are not forced to play any ;)

Must be a lot of $ involved for her to be willing to fly halfway across the world at such short notice just to play a MM when she could have just gone down the road from Miami to PVB if she was really that desperate to play next week. They probably offered her what they offered Serena originally :shrug: I'm not sure she hates Vika because Kim always has that pissed off serious look on her face in all of her matches and never shows any emotion :lol: She could end up in Vika's half of the draw too because she'l only be seeded 3rd from this weeks rankings behind Pennetta :mad:

Vika's likely opponents from the Marbella draw:

R1 Qualifier
R2 Martic
QF MJMS
SF Rezai

All in all not too bad I don't think but could have done without MJMS on her side, but she did avoid being in the same half as Kim at least. We could do without the qualifier being Molik too because she could be tricky but anyone else from the Q draw shouldn't be a problem.

Though I wouldn't worry about Clijsters in Marbella. I worry about MJMS.
Vika: HC > Clay
MJMS: Clay > HC
but MJMS beat Vika on HC so I fear an encounter on clay.

of course she lost to the eventual champ. Story of her career. Indian Wells was such a fluke.

Though I wouldn't worry about Clijsters in Marbella. I worry about MJMS.
Vika: HC > Clay
MJMS: Clay > HC
but MJMS beat Vika on HC so I fear an encounter on clay.

Oh, and why did Venus play so shitty in this final and so GOATly in Dubai when Vika was the opponent. Against the Miami Venus, Vika would have won.
I know right. :shrug:

I think there are some potentially tricky opponents in MJMS's quarter though so hopefully someone will oust her. :)

The MJMS match seems like it could be the same story-line as the Dulko match this time last year.

Vika is good on clay. It's definitely not her best surface, but after a few tournaments in the clay court season, she should be considered a contender in any tournament.

Dulko beat her last year in an early clay court tournament (sorry, I don't remember which one) but then Vika came back and made the semifinals of Rome and the quarters of the French where she almost beat Dinara.

I don't expect good things from this tournament. I just hope that she leaves more comfortable on clay.

If it's true she's training more for stamina than strength this season then that should help her on clay. Does the Marbella MD start tuesday?

I like Steffi Vögele, so I'm hoping she can take out MJMS too. Not going to happen though.

MJMS + red clay + a partisan Spanish crowd = lots of anxiety as a Vika fan.

But I'll worry about that later. Vika has a cakewalk draw for the first two rounds, and unlike American tournaments (even the biggest ones), Marbella has great early-round coverage on B*t365 and elsewhere. So for once, I'm just going to sit back, relax and enjoy the matches.

It might sound a bit harsh considering the final scoreline, but this match was a lot tougher than it should have been. Vika totally dominated early on by immediately taking control of the rallies and finishing points at the net whenever she had the right kind of ball to work with (she must have hit 7 or 8 winners in the first three games alone), but then she stopped coming forward and when she started making more UEs from the baseline, she became a bit tentative during rallies and allowed Meusburger to get into the match. There were even a few points where she was the one being bossed around. :eek: There was a crucial hold of serve at 4-3, and after that she didn't lose another game, but she did have to save a bunch of BPs in the second set.

On a lighter note, although the multilingual self-encouragement was cute ("Come on!", "Allez!", "Davai!", "Vamos!"), if I were a diplomat I would respectfully advise Vika to avoid using Spanish to pump herself up in her next match. It might not sit well with the crowd when facing a player from their own country. ;)

Spiritof42

Convincing? Not really.

Once again, a straight-set win that was tougher than it should have been. Cabeza Candela started playing more aggressively (relatively speaking) when she was down 2-6 0-2. But in the second set, Vika's shots were often too short, she was making too many UEs, and on serve she was in full Camille Pin mode. Fortunately, when serving for the match at 5-4 she realized she needed to come forward like she was doing in the beginning of the match, and managed to close it out without too much fuss (although she did throw a death stare or two at a spectator that was bothering her :lol:).

She's been playing well enough to beat second-rate baseline grinders, but defensive baseline grinding is not what she'll get from her next opponent, so I hope she'll be ready for that.

Most likely scenario would be MJMS, then CSN, then Pennetta in the final. Not the easiest road to a MM clay court title.

Igor_Biscan
Apr 8th, 2010, 09:17 PM
I guess she was worried about her second serve, it seemed like she was double faulting half the time she missed her first. She's had double fault problems since Indian Wells. I don't think the puffball serve is such a big deal on clay, I was more concerned about the passiveness of her groundstrokes and the UEs on the bacjhand side in the second set.

Tomorrow she has to pound away at the MJMS forehand and look to move forward, and she has to keep the intensity up.

allrounder
Apr 8th, 2010, 09:37 PM
Yeah i agree with basically what everyone has written about the match so far. The puffball serve isn't as easy for her opponents to attack on clay but she needs to at least get a few cheap points off her first serve or force her opponents into weak returns that put her into a position to have the upper hand early in rallies. I saw a first serve of hers clocked at just 147 km/h today and the other day i was watching an old match of Vika's from Stuttgart 2008 and she was regularly hitting them in the high 160's :help: She needs to mix her game up a lot more too with slices and drop shots because at the moment it's just too one paced from the baseline.

Break My Rapture
Apr 8th, 2010, 09:42 PM
Yeah, no drop shots today. :tears: Played way too one-sided today. And she needs to go for her first serves, and go to the net. I think she has a chance aginst MJMS though. :shrug: She hasn't played too great either so far.

Spiritof42
Apr 8th, 2010, 09:49 PM
Her recent serving pattern is becoming something of a bad habit. In a match situation, the fewer second serves she has to hit, the more tense she becomes when she does need to hit one. So she becomes very afraid of double-faulting, and tries to make sure the first serve lands in. If she keeps doing that, I'm afraid it's going to hurt her in the long run.

hurricanejeanne
Apr 9th, 2010, 12:05 AM

There was no way to script this more dramatically. First, no stream. Everyone is guessing what is happening. Then, make Vika win every game so everyone is lulled into thinking she will definitely win. Then have a medical timeout but don't tell anyone, make them think the scoreboard is frozen and don't let them know who took the timeout. When they come back, have the injured player win several points in a row so everyone is confused about who is injured, and then when they retire, accidentally type that Vika won to give people false expectations, before changing it to show MJMS won.

Actually, it's quite amazing. The main thing for Vika is to make sure she's okay for the French of course.

This is from the Marbella site

Victoria Azarenka has suffered from left thigh injury while playing against Spanish Maria Jose Martinez on the centre court of Andalucia Tennis Experience.

When she was up 4-0, she suffered from a sudden pain, which made her suspend the match to receive a treatment from the tournament physiotherapist. After the massage given to the back part of her leg, the physiotherapist wrap it with the bandage and the player came back to the court to continue the match to retire only few minutes later. Under this circumstance Maria José Martinez has gone through to the semifinals, where tomorrow she will face fellow Carla Suarez, who earlier on today defeated Tatjana Malek.

Phew, that's a relief. :awww:

Typical of MJMS to do a dropshot when her opponent can barely run. :fiery: :fiery: But whatever, she dropshots all the time too, even if her opponent isn't injured. :lol:

It would be good if it was actually a half hearted tank job just so it gives her plenty of time to get over to Charleston and adjust her bodyclock ready to play :lol: But we know Vika's not the sort of person to do that :angel: Good to hear it's not too serious though, but i think it's pretty certain she'l miss Charleston now unless she has some kind miraculous recovery like her BFF has pulled off in the past :lol:

Vika's new official website is @vika7. The best way to know her knews is using twitter.
I like that, but I miss the blog way of writing in more than 140 characters.

I think her Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Victoria-Azarenka/34055421265) account is pretty reliable as well.

Vika7 Yeah I will tell you in Charleston.. Nothing too exciting though! What happened today? Are you ok??

Vika wrote that to Caroline, so she's gonna play Charleston:weirdo: I'm starting to suspect...

Is that really her on facebook? I always think that's someone else just posting the same stuff that she posts on twitter.

I have no idea. But WTA put her facebook account at their offical website. Maybe it's not Vika herself but her official team.

Not as Easy draw for Vika. I am glad she hasnt withdrawn :)

Vera in the QFs, Woz in the semis.

Yeah not the best draw she could have had considering the fields not too strong this year. It should be pretty straight forward up until the QF's though if she's feeling ok physically. I'm glad she hasn't pulled out too because she needs points here badly now she's out of the top 8. I trust she's been sensible in still playing here after Marbella :scared:

I just hope Vika is okay physically. And indeed Craig, Vika needs points fast. :scared:
But ofcourse, Vera as always. :lol: Woz is so doable in the semis.
Hopefully Vika's thigh is okay. :awww:

That thigh won't get much rest. Points are important, but I don't want her to compromise her clay season by playing when not 100% fit.

Woz is so doable
You got that right. So is Vika :drool:

I think she'l probably do well to get past the QF's to be honest because that leg of hers surely isn't going to be 100% that quickly :confused: Zvonareva was easily the toughest potential QF for a top 4 seed though particularly on the clay :mad: looking at the draw there doesn't look like much potential for many upsets for the top 8 seeds here before the QF's, but i suppose this is the WTA so there probably will be :lol:

I don't think she should be chasing points at charleston if she isn't fully fit, better off making sure she's 100% for the bigger tournaments. But at least the fact she can play at all shows the injury can't be too serious

I'm not sure to be honest. Kim didn't play her first round match until wednesday last week in a smaller tournament with no 1st round byes :confused: It'l depend on how many courts they have at Charleston to get through the matches because i'm not sure. It'l be either Wednesday or Thursday though but it's unlike ES to televise a US based WTA event so early :rolleyes:

It was PVB that replaced AI I think. :scratch:

I don't like it now that it's in PVB. :o

It's a bigger draw in Charleston than at the other tournaments. I think the schedule is something like...
Final = sunday
SF = Saturday
QF = Friday
R16 = Thursday, maybe Wednesday
R32 = Wednesday, maybe Tuesday
R64 = Monday, Tuesday

Vika has bye in R64, will start with R32

The coverage again doesn't look too great at least for British Eurosport of this tournament. Looking at the schedule there's only going to be 1 match shown on Thursday, 2 Friday, 1 Saturday and the final on Sunday. I'm not sure if the European versions of ES will show more coverage because ours is clashing with the snooker world championships :o

I like snooker but theres already another domestic channel here that shows exactly the same matches live at the same time. The only thing that's different about the ES coverage is the commentary team :o

We need to just pray Vika plays during one of the featured timeslots :sad: even Paris indoors had like 4 live matches per day and the field there was hardly high calibre :lol:

I have a subscription to TennisTV, which is supposed to show 7 matches from Charleston starting on Thursday (2 R16s, 2 QFs, both SFs, and the final).
Seeing a R16 match between Vika and Oudin would be nice.

Early-round coverage from American tournaments (even the biggest ones - *cough* Miami, *cough* Indian Wells) is crap, and has been for years.
