Vika's 5th title. :hearts: :cheer:

Still though some things to be fixed like your concentration... Need to be more focused so that to not be caught off guard almost every time in the starts of 2nd set... I liked the fight, the serve still and issue though, serving almost 91% of first serves in for example in the first willn't be of much help against the best returners... so I still hope to see better in that department.

I'm very confident for YEC now, Vika has confidence and her game is in place well, exactly what she needed after all the injuries... surprise everyone in Doha Vika ! :cheer:

Everytime Vika wins a title, I just beam up to the max. probably because of all the bad luck that's holding her back at important times, so winning a title is a change. Hoping for loads more to come next year (and hopefully next week as well ).

I think the most important thing for Vika to do now is, get used to the conditions. The climat in Doha atm is like the exact OPPOSITE of the conditions in Moscow. It's gonna be extremely hot apparently, hopefully Vika will stay okay. :awww: No AO '09 repeat please.

I'm so happy she won!!!! :sobbing::woohoo::cheer:

I've been so freakin' busy this weekend I've barely had time to check the scores! I'm so happy Vika won! I did my victory dance after I saw the score (I had to work this morning so I had to wait). I haven't seen the match yet, but it sounds like she started off very, very, very slowly but I'm glad she was able to turn it around. I wanted her to gain some confidence for Doha and that she did, her group sucks though! Yes, she can beat any one of them, but it's definitely the tougher of the two groups. I'll be extremely happy with her Doha performance if she can make it out of round robin.

Allez, Vika! :cheer:

:help: Vika's group ! This is the worst group ever... As some of you said already Jelena could look like a good pick with the form she's shown recently but the serb could suddenly decide to wake up in YEC...

Kimmie I think Vika can beat her but IDK... to me I barely see anyone stopping Kimmie in the group if she plays 100% tennis, then remains Vera against whom Vika has been having success... Gosh. I just hope my first impression on the group doesn't make it as hard as it seems to be.

Vika gets Kimmie first match then with Vera/Jelena facing up each other tomorrow ? If so this would be a enormous favor for Vika to play Kimmie first match... Kimmie could be rusty and Vika could use that in her advantage than if she'd play Kimmie in 2nd or last match where the belgian would be already hot... then Vika'll just need to manage for the 1/2 against the 2 others... gosh that group.

I imagine it'l be one of JJ or Vera who Vika plays first as you say - last year Vika played on the first 2 days of the YEC IIRC - against JJ on day one and Caro on day 2 then had a day off before her last match.

 Vera sucks that's what you need to deal with... I'm not going to make a list of all the occasions Vika had and head cased time to time... Vika's on court strategies were... :tape: The only good was her short BH out wide who when she was getting it in worked well most of all the rest is E rating.

The pattern Vika's soft FH DTL Vera counters with a DTL BH Vika watches the ball pass her by deceived well... hits her head, "Think !" and repeats the exact same thing next point for the exact same result. :(

Yep, Vika's volleys were a minor problem in that match, her serve sucked, her backhand were spreading multiple errors in the DTLs going for too much or trying impossible zones etc...

I didn't see the match, but I assume Vika was a hot mess and Vera was steady?

Ugh, Vika's becoming the Dementieva of the YEC. Just shows up and does nothing. There's no way Vika's going to be able to beat Saint Kim. Vika needed to beat Bepa (which was doable) and Jelena (which is doable) to have a chance at the semis. Now, she's going to need some luck. The only thing that irks me to death about Vika is her lack of consistency, how she can play so well one week only to turn around and play poorly the next. And don't get me started on her mental issues with that serve of hers. I don't know how someone with such a solid motion can just lose rhythm out of now where like she can.

Well that was pretty disappointing from Vika. As many have said, this was like a must-win given how much I doubt she can beat Kim tomorrow. As well, the frustration is in the fact that she definitely had her chances against Vera today but just couldn't take advantage of any of them. Vera's played well all year but Vika at her best should really beat her. :(

I just hope she gets one win now. Or...you know...maybe she can surprise us and get past the RR?

Why does Vika always choke in Doha? :( Seriously, this is the third time she choked in a match here. :hysteric:

WTF her volleys? :weirdo: Why would such a minor part in Vika's game be of such importance? :weirdo: She just played weak in general. Hopefully she's used to the conditions now and isn't too tired, Kim is getting a cakewalker as we speak. Great.

Yeah, it honestly seems like the magnitude of the event or her wanting to do well in this event + the generally more brutal conditions there combine for some bad Doha chokes for Vika. :tape:

Also, I might be delusional but I thought her net approaches and volleys, while not awesome, were decent today compared to other aspects of her game sadly. At least it looked like a decent strategy when she employed it. :p

Well if you compare her volleys to her serve obviously her volleys were genius for most because her serve once again [...] IDK the more I watch Vika play singles and come at the net the more I see that playing doubles doesn't bring nothing to her in that department... maybe I'm too pessimistic but that's what I feel.

Look what I found in Caro's cheering thread from about a year ago

I'm relatively new on this forum and I really like Caroline Wozniacki... Her technique is great, very clean, she moves well, is very solid from the baseline...

I just wanted to say that the only things that I might reproach her are comparativly to players of her generation wich are Lisicki, Cirstea and Azarenka she really has to get somekind of thing on her serve...

Then I think Caro lacks of a very big shot... She's solid in most aspects of the game but I just don't sense that killer shot that most of the top 5 girls have... Serena's backhand, Venus' Serve or Jankovic's and Safina's backhand down the line, Ana's and Lisicki's devastating forehands...

Then I think Caroline should be shotmaking a little bit more... I've reviewed matches of Caroline in GS against Dokic AO, Lisicki Wim or Cirstea RG (where she led 5-0 and sunk:eek:) ; 75% of the time she's passive... But that's not the game if she wants to get a GS and ameliorate by the fact her wins against top 10 wich is very very disastreous win/loss 4-16:sad: I think she needs big shots...

But she looks like a girl that's very interested in ameliorating her tennis game and I'm looking foward to see her do new things by next year... I think she will never win a GS but I hope she suprises me:angel:

Caroline's gonna beat Kuz because if you watch well how the top top seeds fall one by one I think if Caroline decides to stay offensive as she did against Sori by coming to net or refusing to back up... Why not edge Kuz ?

Kvitova took all her chances against Safina and beat her fairly, Caroline's got to take her chances too by all means and that match could be hers;)

And finally the last time that these 2 played ended up in a tight 3 setter... She's clearly the outsider and outsiders just seems to do well in that 2009 US...

And if she makes it through wow her draw has just exploded and we might see a 1rst semi in GS profiling for her !

Petrova might beat Oudin due to better serving and I think Caro has a chance on Petrova due to better regularity and nerves handling...

And if she meets Wickmayer, Kvitova etc... in the semis it's playable for the finals and for the win why not:D:D if Kim beats the Williams sisters:lol:

Great match from Caro... She played good solid tennis as she allways does !

I was sure Caro was going to pull up the win but finally the biggest obstacle is that Oudin youngster !

She really has get a real solid strategie to get the upset... I really hope she gets that match cuz after I don't see no one preventing Caro's first GS final !

Vika's serve when under pressure . I hope one day she overcomes that. Apart from that, she just didn't have what it took today, and also the luck wasn't going her way. Vera wasn't that great, but was probably slightly better in the end.

Also, Andreas, why are you quoting vikapower? There's nothing wrong with people slowly changing who they support over time. You might get a good impression of a player and then over time you decide you don't like their game, and you might not particularly like one player but after a while they grow on you. These quotes imply that he was hoping to see certain improvements in Caro's game, and when Caro failed to show signs of these improvements, he realised he didn't like her game as it is. We are free to change our opinions. And why are you looking at his posts from over a year ago? I suppose something happened in GM, which I rarely visit.

Anyway, move on, move on. Onto the next match, which will probably be very tough. Kim served a lot of doublefaults today, but will probably tidy up her performance against Vika.

I agree. It was tight the whole way through. But Vera managed to steal more points when Vika had the initiative, than the other way around, due to playing better defense today. When Vika had the initiative, she seemed a little more likely to miss. But there wasn't much in it. Losing 3 points in a row at 3-3 in the tb was pretty crucial I thought.

See, I don't know what's worse. Having chances and losing them because you made errors or just getting routed or outplayed. If Vera was simply better, I can handle that. If Vika got spanked, I can handle that because at least she was crap throughout the whole match. But this irks me. Vika's really going to have to find a way to overcome these nerves in big matches against players she has issues with. She'll always have issues with these players, but she has to find away to get over the nervous hump.

Doha over then  to be fair when the groups were drawn i couldn't realistically see Vika winning more than 1 match with so little time to adjust and off the back of some tough matches in Moscow where IMO she didn't have to play above 70% of her ability to win it and is still not at her best again understandably after all her injury problems.

She couldn't have been given a tougher group than the 1 she got and then she goes and gets the toughest 2 matches first :( a decent effort from her though regardless :) its just a pity all the tennis she has played recently seemed to catch up with her in the 3rd set. I assume she'l play her last match because it guarantees at least 70 more points but god knows if she's going to be ok physically

After initially being quite upset by how close both these losses were, I think I'm definitely seeing the positive side in it as well. Vika actually showed pretty good fight in both matches. Dentine's right that Doha was sort of gravy considering everything this year and while it was reachable to get past the RR stage, she put in a pretty darn good showing.

As for the year as a whole, there's a lot of things to be proud of and a lot of things she can build on. If she and her team can focus on the things that held her back (general fitness, serve, etc) and work on them appropriately, I think 2011 will be a really good year for her.

Oh, and when she lost the first set today I inwardly begged her to win at least a set from the first two matches and she won the second set so thanks Vika! :D

Vika ends with a 7-4 vs. the top 10, 18-25 overall, she's 1-4 vs. the top 5, 5-13 overall... Vika is 42-18 w/l (0.700) which makes her 6th overall this year...

Vika is 32-10 on HC (0.761) which makes her 5th - Vika is 4th with a 31-10 (0.756) in win percentage...

Anyway from her statistic sheet she really had a very good season it's just sad and unfortunate though that it didn't translate better in the bigger events with all these injuries... next year I hope.

It's quite funny that her YEC results were pretty much the same as last year - a comfortable win over Jankovic, and two close losses - but it feels much more positive this time. She definitely played better than last year's YEC despite not getting the results, and she seemed happier with herself and positive about the future.

It probably feels more positive because she finished with a win rather than 2 horrible losses. I'm not sure if she played better this year or not but her group was a lot harder and I had low expectations for her after barely getting off the plane from Moscow before her first match because she really needed at least a weeks preparation if she was going to do any serious damage in Doha. She did well to make the first 2 matches as close as they were I think and getting to Doha was a big achievement after the injury problems she's had. Last year she played a perfect set of tennis against Caro then was a point from the SF's but somehow managed to lose and her match with Radwanska was pretty much groundhog day when she choked as she got near the finishing line after playing well

Temperenka
Nov 7th, 2010, 03:39 PM
I would almost rather her draw Venus than Schiavone.

Schiavone is always very dangerous and Venus is typically crap in Australia.

So Vika's R3 will be against someone ranked 17-24? Or how does that work?

Nov 7th, 2010, 07:03 PM
It's really early to think about Vika's draw for now... mostly because of Elena and Aga... but to roughly answer your question Temperenka and based on the WTA rule book and seed placement so as the updated ranking here's what we have in the seeds Vika might face if I'm not mistaken :

1/2 : [3] Kimmie, [27] Dulgheru, [14]Bartoli, [6] Sam, [10] Li Na, [20] Kaia, [19] Nastya or [28] Hantuchova
1/4 : [1] Wozniacki, [17] Rezai, [25] Kuznetsova or [13] Petrova
R4 : [26] MJMS or [5] Venus
R3 : [18] Kirilenko

NOTE : Dementieva is not included so Vika becomes the #9 seed and Aga neither BTW.

NOTE 2 : If the rankings stays like this with Dementieva and Aga well Vika slides in Kimmie's section and they'll both face in the 1/4, in the 4th round she might get Sam.

Jane Lane
Nov 7th, 2010, 07:39 PM
Well they have to take Elena off the rankings don't they?

Vikapower
Nov 7th, 2010, 08:04 PM
^^ Yes they have, Aga stated that she was out from the AO so that Lucie Safarova and Petrova becomes respectively the [31] and [32] seeds.

I sincerely hope Serena stays the #4 seed otherwise there'll be a strong chance that she draws Vika yet again, as it is now without Aga and Elena they can only meet in the finals but if Serena moves down then the closer she comes to meet Vika.

For example if Vika becomes the #7 seed she'll be in the upper section of the 64 draw and 2nd 32 draw with Kimmie and they'll face in the 1/4... in fact the best thing is that Serena and Vika stays where they are as long as possible.

I'll make the placement of the seeds on the 128 draw and give more precisions.

hurricanejeanne
Nov 8th, 2010, 12:42 AM
As long as she doesn't get Saint Kim or Ana at all in Melbourne I can deal with the draw. But with Vika's draw luck...:p

She's actually been at Eastbourne the last 3 years - in 2008 she got injured in her first match and retired against Rezai after the first set, in 2009 she had a minor injury in training there and withdrew. This year she lost in the final whilst injured to Makarova, so maybe she's just sick of getting injured there  It'l be a shame if she doesn't play there because she played some of her best tennis there last season and more than likely would have won it if she hadn't been hurt

Birmingham would be awesome because I'll probably be there (will definitely go if Vika plays) but it won't happen. She should play eastbourne but she'll probably see how things are going, if she's had a really good first half she'll want to be careful about playing too many matches

Vika has always tried to play Eastbourne but to me this year was the only year where she "successfully" did so disregarding yet again her injury and the fact that she was still able to make the finals.

Surely she'l have to add Eastbourne with final points to defend too
Well to be honest if Vika finally breaks through Australia or maybe at a lesser extent RG next year, playing or not playing Eastbourne willn't have that much importance.

It also depends on how well she performs also in the mandatories IW, Miami and Madrid in which she has lots of points to take, I think Eastbourne is very optional depending on how successful she is at first.

She really shouldn't be playing Marbella just because that's a lot of tennis in a three month period leading up to Roland Garros. The upside is she isn't defending anything during the clay and if she's not going to play Eastbourne she'll need to make up her finals points from there somewhere. Maybe she'll have a good March and do well in Indian Wells and Miami and not want to play Marbella. :p
