Yeah  The whole indoor fall season has been trashed by the new roadmap that came in last year :o

The roadmap sucks. I hate it.
I miss the old Tier I-V formats :wavey:

Me too. The WTA is messing it up entirely by replacing events like Berlin with Warsaw, Portoroz with Baku, ... It's just ridiculious. I hadn't even heard of Baku before it was mentioned here.

Jane Lane

I had to google it too
People complained about the low attendance in Guangzhou and Seoul? Only the birds will be watching in Baku.

Exactly. :sobbing: Although I think Seoul is one of the best MMs on the calendar, Guangzhou is mostly terrible year after year.

So Safarova in round 2 of singles.. if Vika is not too rusty she should win

Also, really excited to see her back in singles action next. Safarova is beatable but let's see how Vika's form is. I don't think we can really assess that from that first doubles match anyway. ;)

Don't understand Govortsova-Radwanska being on Centre Court either. :tape: I suppose I may be biased but Vika always seems to get the short end of the stick when it comes to the top youngsters in getting TV coverage. I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Oh no don't talk to me about Ao. I often make blank nights, I don't exactly know how to say that to see Victoria play... especially that the organizers take a subtle pleasure in the first rounds in scheduling her just as I wouldn't be able to watch her match. The worst though is wake up to watch your fave lose.

I've made my resolutions before time, I'm certainly not going to search to see all my faves, just Vika/Maria and as Julia isn't one of the very top players get some pieces of her as they might more often than not schedule her late.

I think Vika has a great draw from here. Marion (5-0 H2H) will still be tough though. She dismantled Ana. After that is the winner of Coco vs. Julia G? Not too worried about that. And then probably Caro or Pavly. I like Vika's chances if she can stay focused.

The bartoli h2h is a bit misleading as their recent matches have been close, probably going to be another tough one. The forecast is ok for tokyo so maybe they will actually play outdoor today.

Hmm I was just wondering, wouldn't Kimiko beating Schiavone be a good thing for Vika in the race to Doha?

Anybody saw Coco's play? Can she challenge Vika?

I saw her play Jankovic two years ago at the US Open and the biggest thing that I remembered was what a huge serve she had. The rest of her game was still unpolished so I'm guessing she's improved since then. Vika shouldn't take her lightly.

Nina.
Sep 29th, 2010, 09:47 AM
Anybody saw Coco's play? Can she challenge Vika?

I only saw her at the US Open this year against Lisicki and she was pathetic (sorry to say so). Couldn't keep the ball in play for two shots. But she obviously has to play better here so it looks like it depends on which Coco is gonna show up.
She's a big hitter and when she doesn't miss Vika has to stay patient, I think.
But she should win that no matter how Coco plays.

allrounder
Sep 29th, 2010, 11:15 AM
I saw the Coco-Lisicki match too and she was dreadful. She has a decent serve and big forehand, but she makes loads of errors through just bashing mindlessly with it a lot of the time. If Vika uses the same tactics she used against Masha, Stosur in Stanford and Li Na in Montreal of keeping the ball deep down the middle cutting off the angles she should be able to dismantle her. Also not puffballing the 2nd serve straight into her FH hitting zone would help. Vika always seems to get these random lower ranked ballbashers when they have their one fluke tournament this year though

All the QF's should be on CC shouldn't they with only 4 singles matches? the forecast is for more heavy rain tomorrow so you'd hope the organisers would be smart enough to do that.

Anybody saw Coco's play? Can she challenge Vika?

Unfortunately yes she can, Coco is a trap kind of Lapushchenkova like... bar USO if Coco is on she can do some heavy hitting... She really challenged Kuzzie in LA has some flat really penetrating shots, huge take back too her movement sucks huge, her serve can be erratic especially when pressured which can result in many DFs and she also lacks a lot of explosivity e.g. at the net...

Actually Julia would have been an easier task... I love all three players but I'd really prefered Julia to had get the win then Vika prevails anyways the strategy is clear get Coco on the run and take a lot of time away from her because of her take back, on the second one that's what Vika usually does so Vika in 2 for me... Come on ! :cheer:

That and the WTT scorelines from summer are what are making me the most nervous about this match up. Hopefully Vika's too consistent and solid for Coco.

No I want a Caro semi as well. It's time for Vika to reestablish herself in that rivalry. While Caro's been on an upswing for a while, Vika's dropped a bit and a win over Caro here would go a long way in at least evening out a bit more.

Vika backhand crosscourt - Coco backhand long. Repeat.

Except for one point I think which finished which Vika finished with a BH CC winner. Mach point was a defensive lob by Vika which Coco put into the net. I felt bad for the crowd, maybe the early part of the match was more competitive.

At the end she waved to the crowd but instead of blowing kisses she bowed to the four corners. Really cute

As for withdrawing from doubles maybe not bad... singles>>>>>doubles and Vika is in the semis of a huge event...ok maybe I'm not very objective on that since I never care much about doubles...

I really really don't know if Vika'll make it to the YEC... but if really in case she doesn't but ends the year with 1-2 titles that'll be a great booster for next season and that's maybe what counts the most finally.

bluestorm10

The most disappointing part was that she was playing so crappily and was still so close on the scoreboard. And also, having her play that badly after what seemed like a pretty good week for her.

Also disappointing is that it was against a rival who I truly believe she is better than, but who has surpassed her thus far in terms of accomplishments.

Also disappointing is the fact that her serve was so ridiculously bad today it was farcical. As I've said, it's bad enough that on good days it's really not potent or anything but when you throw that in along with those DFs then it really becomes an exercise in futility on her service games.

Still, regarding perspective, it was still a semifinal showing and she lost to probably the next no. 1. Also, I had to go to sleep when it was 4-0 Caro. The last set ended up 6-4. Vika had to fight back as well in the second set even if it was primarily because she was putting herself in bad situations. Thus, the scoreline is respectable and she showed that even when she's absolutely in dire form, she can compete and grit her way into the match. Maybe some time, or against someone else, it would have resulted in a win.

On the bright side, we were so worried at the beginning of the week how she'd do post-US Open fall and for the most part I think she showed similar form from before the Open and now. The Caro match I believe was always going to be difficult and even ugly given the stakes and how Caro plays.

Finally, what's up with her Beijing draw???? Near Masha??? Have to be kidding me.

I watched all in TV and God it was horrible.
Vika's serves were a joke... some of her firsts serves in the first were so ugly :help:
Vika beheaviour was horrible too, throwed her racket, screamed... and Caro did the same.
The second set was so funny... Vika served at 5-4 and at 6-5 and she couldn't close it until tie break, which I think it was the only part of the set she was focussed and using her brain.
I went to sleep at 4 am, with Vika down 4-0, i can't believe she came back hehe.

Caro didn't play a brilliant match too that may explain the score... indeed I truly Vika is far more better than Caro but I have to admit that Caro's serve is just far more better and becoming far more better than Vika... Like how could you serve for the set at 6-5 and throw in 2 DF against someone who doesn't even attack serve that much and especially when you yourself don't take that so much risk on your own serve ?? :help:

To me Vika is still on the dead point with her serve and serving strategies... and her FH she still is having problems hitting through it consistently... against Venus in Dubaï Vika hit at the close end of the second one of the best sets of FH I've ever seen her strike... why is this far away gone ?:

IK this was a comeback tourney but there are some things in Vika's game that are just too recurrent and those even when she plays her best... IDK Caro is so said to be her BFF why don't they share serving tips ?? I'm really tired of Vika serving 70%+ of :help:... and the worst she still finds a way to make 10+ DFs with those... that's harsh...

Anyway, now Vika gets a crappy draw in Beijing just to ruin the end of her season... I just hope she gets a good solid run there... Doha seems really untouchable...

Yeah, I've heard a lot about Woz improving her serve a lot and I agree that she has. I can't explain why Vika's hasn't improved to the same degree. I was chatting with someone on Twitter and they rightfully said that her serve isn't "potent" enough to warrant so many DFs in this match. In other words, she won't win free points on her serve anyway so she should have tried to be less risky.

Although from what I could tell, it was really just that she couldn't find the box. I don't necessarily think she was trying to be too aggressive with her serve or anything.

I forgot to mencion her volleys... :help: :sobbing:
Caro didn't played a great match, but she didn't made goofy mistakes and her serve was really good, she won a lot of free points w/ it.
Some of Vika's serves seemed to not be even close to pass the net and they were to weak.
After this week, and w/ her Beijing draw Doha is so far of reach, and if she doesn't play it she'll lose many points and her rank would probably fall.

bluestorm10

Oh yeah, and it was so frustrating because I felt like Vika had so many chances to win a crucial game. Then it'd go back to Deuce and then when Caro would get her first game point or something, she'd win it right away. Super disheartening. :( Also, Vika needs to play those points better against the top players. After five chances wasted in a single game, I pretty much knew Caro would take the game.

Hmm, from the stats and what people are saying it seems this was not the highest quality match. I didn't see it but my dad did and he thought it was hilarious. Hilariously... bad. It also seems that Vika's weak serve continues to be a problem under pressure, both in terms of lack of pace or free points and also doublefaulting when under stress.

Caro has certainly improved her serve in the last year or two. That is probably one of the biggest things that has helped her to climb further up the rankings. Vika needs to follow suit. Vika's serve once had a reputation- many years ago in the juniors. I guess she hasn't developed it further.

Temperenka
Oct 1st, 2010, 04:38 PM
It was one of the worst matches I've ever seen (from both). They were both spraying everything, Vika was double faulting, they were missing relatively easy drive volleys, they were sceraming, they were challenging calls that were a foot out, Vika was missing returns on break chances by a mile. It was just horrible.

I guess we really didn't know how Vika was playing. Lucie has had a bad year, Marion is Vika's bitch and retired, and CoCo isn't exactly a world class player yet... so we may have over estimated Vika's form coming in to the match... but I hope to god she didn't play that badly previous to yeaterday.

She will need a dramatic turn-around after that if she wants to qualify for Doha. With Elena making the Tokyo final (and more than likely winning the title), there is a big gap for Vika to fill. Being an alternate might bo good enough though. I'm guessing either Venus, Serena, or Kim will withdraw giving her a spot. However, it wouldn't hurt for her to win Osaka and qualify for Bali as well.

It's a frustrating loss because these are the type of matches she really needs to be winning especially against the likes of Wozniacki. Considering what happened to her at the USO she probably deserves a little bit of slack because it seems as if she had hardly trained much before this week after her concussion seemed to take longer than expected to recover from, so the SF's is a good effort despite the manner of this loss. Caro was always going to be a tough match today considering she'd basically had a bye to the SF with how little resistance her opponents have given her this week and her game relies an awful lot on her stamina by running every ball down and rallying all day if needs be. 12 DF's is the same amount Vika had against Ivanovic and it's not as if Wozniacki is a really aggressive returner either :help:

If Sharapova wasn't her potential R3 in Beijing it'd be a good draw :( but it's still a doable one

Her serve was completely :banghead:
The match was so bad that I couldn't see it all. In the middle of second set I gave up and went to bed to get some sleep.
Her serve now is big problem. It really needs to get better if she wants to have a higher rank.

The new service motion causes puffball first serves again. :( Get rid of it! Way too many DFs as well.
So many chances, Vika. :o I thought she looked pretty rusty TBH. :sobbing: Hopefully this 3 hour match gave her a lot of practice and stuff to think about. Still a nice week. :) Oh and is it just me, or did Vika look not as intense as she usually is?

I hate the Beijing draw btw. :o

Will's favourite doubles team have drawn a Chinese WC pairing of Sun/Zhang in R1 with the possibility of Petrova/Kiri in R2.

Vika changed her service motion ?? There weren't no reasons to do so to me. It seems to me Vika has confidence problems on that shot.

Well it's only a minor change. She just holds her serving arm in a different way before tossing and I don't know why but she was really puffballing her first serve in the second and third set. :(

Vika to me has problems with her racket head speed... instead of accelerating she does the contrary... RHS only comes if you have an effective shoulder turn or use of the upper body and both FH, serve... she has a hard time doing so... Sam Sumyk in the Youtube Stuttgart training was making to her multiple remarks on that but nothing has changed since then...

The only problem I have with Vika's serve is her follow through... her arm is rigid and straight but that doesn't affect anything at contact point... Nadal just twicked his grip from extreme to continental just before the USO and he can now serve 120+ mph on a regular basis sometimes little things makes a huge difference but in that match for Vika is epical failure maybe it can pay off tomorrow and in time to come.

I really hope gets a serve before 2011... in women's tennis there's nothing more important than that shot especially when you want to seriously contend for slams even Fran I remember who doesn't have the hugest serve had it clicking in the French final especially outwide and that really puts pressure on your opponent.

Oh Victoria! Why do you have serving days like this! :banghead: I really don't know what she could do about her serve issues, it's not as severe as some players but it's obvious that it's an on going issue. I wish her coach would have fixed/helped/corrected the issue already. Sounds like the match was error-tastic.

Oh well, semis isn't that bad considering the crap she's gone through the last month; even though she should be able to beat Caro regardless.

Beijing is a crap draw, even if Maria is under par right now I don't like Vika's chances against her in the mental game.

I would assume the serve is something Victoria works hard at during training, however when you step into the spotlight its a different ball game, its just a matter of been able to cope under pressure, and not cracking.
