IF SO, then really irresponsible of trainers/her team to let her go out there without checking her out in the hospital first. Brain injuries are SERIOUS stuff guys. Did you hear about Bret Michaels?

Or worse yet, Natasha Richardson?

Ugh! I just hope this is all just gossip!

There have been a number of stories of people hitting their heads, thinking they are ok, and then passing away later that day.

I'm terrified still. We don't know for sure that Vika will be ok.

I hope that her fall didn't look bad or that she tried to play it off as nothing. Otherwise I'm going to be absolutely livid at her team for not taking her to get looked at.

Hmmm sounds like she was gonna just give it a try, but still in that heat with a concussion is just stupid. The medical team AND her team should have put their foot down. Usually the way to treat the concussion is to rest for a few days, she'll need to be watched constantly, especially when she sleeps to makes sure she doesn't get worse.

But I'm happy it's not something that's going to be a problem in the future for her.

hurricanejeanne
Sep 1st, 2010, 11:07 PM
A concussion is an injury to the brain that causes immediate impairment of neurologic function as the result of a forceful blow to the head. Simply put, a concussion is a temporary injury to the brain tissue. Depending on the force of the injury the concussion can have variable types and duration of symptoms.

So basically, it's a bruise to the brain.

Spiritof42
Sep 1st, 2010, 11:19 PM
Even before the official statement was released, as soon as I heard unconfirmed reports that she had hit her head during practice earlier today, I suspected she had probably suffered a mild concussion before the match, and of course the LAST thing you want to do in that situation is subject yourself to high-intensity physical activity under such oppressing heat. She had classic symptoms of minor head trauma, and these symptoms appeared too early in the match to be the result of heat stroke alone. Her brain needed rest to repair itself, but instead it was subjected to an environmental ordeal while the tissue was probably still swelling...

I'm *tremendously* relieved that she is now doing better, because the brain is such a fragile and vital organ and damage is not always reversible, but I can't believe how unlucky she is. Last year in Australia it was the combination of a viral illness and the heat that took her down. She had thrown up all night, and set foot on court on an empty stomach and without proper hydration. Both times, she entered the match with an existing condition which was exacerbated by the brutal conditions. She did not fall prey to the heat alone because of poor fitness, as some people have claimed.

I think everyone's a bit tired.

Looking up info on concussion, it seems that the medical team must have assessed Vika's concussion to be a grade 1 type, where you can usually return to sports activity on the same day, so long as you have been examined by trained professionals, and all symptoms have subsided. However, given the intense heat and the elite level of play, probably in this case Vika should not have been allowed to play. At the very least at the slightest sign of recurrence of symptoms- which happened a couple of games before- she should have been immediately pulled off the court, no matter how much she wanted to play. She probably told them something like "don't pull me off the court unless I say so", but they should have ignored her.

http://neurology.health-cares.net/concussion-treatment.php

Edit: wait kman was banned? I never went to that thread in GM so don't know exactly what he said, but I guess there was every chance he would say something foolish...

I don't usually go into GM a whole lot but couldn't really resist it today by desperate for some Vika updates  He was basically just trolling by saying stuff like Vika's retirement proved she wasn't mentally or physically good enough unlike his precious Caro :weirdo: i'm sure he already had a temp ban before around last summer so i don't know if he was on his last chance or not.

I hope it was. It was truly disgusting to read what he was saying. I hope (and think) that I will never stoop to that level ever.

Also, yeah, I'm exhausted too plus I have a huge headache now. Seems like everything's okay now though so I'll take it.

I want to thank everyone for your well wishes after my retirement today. I wanted to let you all know that I am doing well and feeling much better. I was warming up in the gym prior to my match against Gisela Dulko when I accidentally fell and hit my head. I tried my very best to play and finish the match however it just was not possible. I was taken to the hospital for some medical tests and I’m back at my hotel feeling better now. I would like to wish Gisela best of luck with the rest of the tournament and thank her for her concern. I would also like to think the US Open staff and doctors who have done a wonderful job. I don't think you can really blame Vika for wanting to play. Probably the more critical thing was the medical time out after the first three games. If she was losing feeling in her hand they should have stopped the match right there as there was obviously a serious problem.

I'm still a bit numb myself from yesterday, hard to form a clear opinion on this.

Yes, it's understandable that she wanted to keep trying.

I did think they should have stopped it earlier. But it's a slam, it's a big call. It's hard to figure out exactly what should have been done. I wonder, to what extent is the player in control of this, and to what extent can other people force her stop? I mean, if it was a slam final, let's say, and she was a set up, she might not want to stop no matter what, even if it was dangerous to her. Would someone have the authority to actually force her to stop? Now that I think about it, this part actually puzzles me. I imagine that there's a certain point at which the medical advisors are able to simply force a player to stop even if they do not want to, but I'm not familiar enough with the details of these rules to be sure.

allrounder
Sep 2nd, 2010, 02:11 PM
If it wasn't a slam maybe she wouldn't have risked it, but I agree you can't really blame her for wanting to play especially after being cleared by the medical staff. It'd be interesting to know how close to the match beginning that her accident occurred as people have said one of the US TV pundits (can't remember which one) spoke to her before before the match and said she seemed positive and upbeat with nothing seemingly wrong with her so i'd imagine it probably happened after that.

It's still a little puzzling to know that there were medics courtside the whole time monitoring her that knew about her accident, but they did nothing when she showed signs of struggling well before she eventually collapsed and even at 5th game changeover it didn't seem as if she was even advised to retire.

Anyway at least she seems to be OK now :) I hope 2011 brings her more luck on the injury front because surely she can't do worse than this year  The only good thing about if she finishes just outside the top 10 would be that it'd allow her to be more in control of her own schedule with no incentives to play whilst she's not 100%.

Actually, she's not playing doubles. ;) We might have to go there and actually barricade her in her room if she hadn't pulled out of doubles.

Also, I'm sorry if it seemed in my earlier post that I was pinning the blame on Vika. I am actually of the mindset that it's understandable on her part that she didn't stop herself out there. Either because she really wants to compete or, more likely, she's too far gone with her concussion that she's unable to be fully rational and aware at that moment. I do believe that it was irresponsible of the medical team to let her continue especially as I think Nina said she had clearly whiffed on her serves, looked dazed and was definitely exhibiting concussive symptoms throughout the match.

I'm glad she's okay now but the thought that it could have been much much worse due to negligence on the medical part (whether the tournament doctors or her team) is difficult to stomach and it'd be the same for any player.

Unfortunately those headlines are helping to create a public image of Vika being unable to take heat, when actually she trains in Arizona. It's a bit annoying, but most people just don't pay attention to details, so everyone will just remember her falling as if from the heat. It's like when tabloids publish some sensational news about someone on the front page, then the week after put a little retraction on the back page. No one remembers the retraction, apart from a few people in the know, like the people in this forum. But the important thing is that she recovers. It doesn't really matter if some unknowledgeable people think she can't take heat. But it is a bit irritating.

On ESPN they said the warm up fall was only 5 mins before the match began

That, in a lot of ways, explains a lot!

I'm not sure I'm going to be able to behaving myself in that thread about the wanting an investigation into Vika's collapse so I'll vent here. :D

So, 5 minutes before the match, Vika's warming up by running sprints, somehow she trips and hits her head and hits her arm/elbow. Trainer and doctor look her over and probably said that she'll be sore in those spots she hit and gave her some pain medication. What are the odds that she'd get a concussion? Very, very slim. She was wobbly and wasn't herself for the first three games of the match and calls the trainers back out. They check her elbow, her eyes (to see if she can follow the trainer's finger which is a dizziness test), and her stomach. Vika decides to give it another try, probably see how the sets goes and decides from there. Unfortunately, she gets worse, completely wiffs a serve, and then hits a second serve at her own service line. It's then noticed by the commentators (at least the one's I had) that she seems "completely out of it". Eventually, she probably becomes so dizzy that she must sit down and then collapses.

A lot of the blame doesn't really go on anyone in particular. People bump their heads all the time and not all of them are concussions. If Vika's fall happened 5 minutes before the match started I'm fairly confident that the doctors didn't think much of it and just thought she'd have a headache for a while and gave her some pain medication for it.
At 0-3 during the injury time out, to me, is the main part of this main part of this problem. We don't really know what the trainer and doctor said to Vika. Did they suggest her to retire because it might be something more than the headache? Did they suggest that her symptoms might just go away? We don't know, we know that she was dizzy, had numbness in her fingers, and had blurry vision. I would like to think that if I'm a doctor and my patient tells me those symptoms that I would tell them to rest immediately and go for tests. It seems like the trainer and the doctor, along with Vika, decided to see if she got worse or got better before the next change over. She obviously got worse.

Honestly this is really just an incredibly unfortunate freak accident and I have a feeling that if a duplicate of yesterdays events reoccured the exact same thing would have happened though perhaps that player would have retired at 0-3. I can't blame anyone for this, though it would be nice to know exactly what was said to Vika during that injury time out.

bluestorm10
Sep 2nd, 2010, 08:17 PM
hurricanejeanne,

Okay, I see your point and agree with you now. I guess I was just too emotional in criticizing the doctors. If the fall had happened 5 minutes before the match, there'd be no way for them to truly assess the situation.

I'll still say though that after the medical time-out it should have been clear to them. :p However, as people say, hindsight is 20-20 right? Just an awful conflux of events which happily had a good ending.

hurricanejeanne
Sep 2nd, 2010, 10:04 PM
It's very emotional because people want someone to blame for what happened. I have a hard time thinking it's anyone's fault considering what we know. So until Vika comes out and says exactly piece by piece what happened we just have to go off what we know.

I believe, based on all we know, Vika thought she just had a bump on the head and it was nothing major. Unfortunately it turned out to be a really big bump on the head and a concussion that cost her a great run at a slam. I do wish she had retired at 0-3 but they tried to wait it out a little bit longer. Sometimes, waiting it out helps, unfortunately this time it didn't and only made it worse. She probably could have wobbled her way through the rest of that first set and retired without the collapse, but when the dizziness and the vertigo finally rear their heads you have no choice but to lay down and that she did after fighting that dizziness for a few games.

I'm hopeful the next time we see Vika, she'll be back to her usual, healthy yet moody self. :D

Thanks for the info Jeanne. You're right, it's better not to be too hard on the medical advisors. Vika and everyone else obviously had no idea she had a concussion. It's pretty unlucky actually. Most bumps don't result in concussions, otherwise little kids who fall all the time would have concussions every day. Incidentally, this event reminded me why I'm not a big fan of boxing, except as a fitness exercise. The whole sport is about giving people concussions, although the olympic version with head protection and a focus on point scoring instead of knockouts is maybe more forgivable.

Blame isn't useful anyway, the main focus has to be her recovery.

There's no way Vika will pull out of any tournament in the fall whilst she is still trying to qualify for Doha and isn't genuinely injured IMO. The crazy money at stake in Doha is too much for any player to want to miss out on - it's like $100k per win plus all the bonus ranking points.

Oy, that's a lot of tennis especially if she plays doubles in a couple of those tournaments. That's true, especially since she has shot at making it to Doha and even if she doesn't make it there she would want to get some ranking points to sort of make up the difference. I guess we'll have to wait and see how Vika plays in the first two of these tournaments and go from there.

She only played two fall events (Beijing and Tokyo) and she did pretty well even though she ran into Li and Sharapova early in those events. And since these are hardcourts or indoors she could do very well at them.

I'm sure Vika's just resting after all that happened and that's why she hasn't tweeted since. It's got to be very hard not only to get knocked out of a slam that early for her (remember the French earlier this year) and then even worse under those circumstances.

1. Bartoli at Eastbourne this year (46 winners, 8 aces and only 17 UE's )

2. Miami 09, although if she hadn't got injured in the Eastbourne final and won I think her level of performance was actually higher there and against good players.

3. Last years YEC loss to Wozniacki after she had match point to win it 6-1 6-3 and get through to the SF's. Then when it went to a third set she was ahead a break the whole time until she served for the match and lost the last 4 games  The choke against Radwanska in the next match was almost as bad though :sobbing:

1. last years wimbledon one - Vika looks amazing in all white :hearts:

I was quite fond of that Nike blue one Sam posted from the fall 08 season too and the 09 RG outfit.

2. This article TheBoiledEgg posted in the old cheering thread about Vika and her families early life in Minsk and her getting into tennis (mostly the bottom section) http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=6184520&postcount=136

Great idea lol...

1. Real though question but to me the best match I've ever seen Vika played on a tennis standpoint was AO 2009 vs. Serena 4th round I remember that was one of the first times I really saw Vika play after having seen her in 2008 AO and I was just bluffed, speechless.

Wimbledon 2009 vs. Sorana Cirstea too can't exactly remember the round was absolute greatness from Vika on serve and on her groundstrokes - I remember in that match was a serve contest and both girls were just pilling up holds on serve until the tie-breaker had to decide against Sori.

On a mental standpoint AO 2010 vs. Vera was a great match from Victoria and this was the first time ever to me I've seen Vika show positives on a court trying her best to an opponent she was 4-0 H2H and 8-0 sets down too... 4-6 and a break down in the match really showed some incredible fight.

2. Tough one too but it'll be easy to say Miami but Stanford to me was a better overall tournament for Vika because she really had to give everything she had in the Bartoli match and the level of play up there was of very good quality.

3. IW 2010 against MJMS I am usually very calm but that result got me so vexed, frustrated, desperate, lost, deceived...

1. I know this wasn't on court but :hearts: I really like her outfit from Marbella 2010 too.

1. Vika's best match so far immediately makes me think of RG 09 R4 vs Ana. :tears: Also the first set in her QF against Dina there.
2. I thought she played played quite well in Stanford this year. She plays pretty well in Australia most of the time as well.
3. The way she played in the second set against Niculescu frustrated me like hell. :o That's one of the more recent ones, there haven't been a lot of them this year though.

1. Brisbane '09 + AO '10.
2. What Sam said.
3. I really liked her Doha video of last year.

1. What Craig said. That made me laugh SO hard.

I'm so happy there are a lot of responses. I thought for sure I'd get like one or two. ;)

Okay, so here's my list:

1. Best match: I like all of your matches so I'll give another one which I loved: the Stanford semi versus Stosur. :) The W/UE were kind of even but I really loved how she played in that match.

2. Stanford 2010 :worship: Maybe because it was the last title she won though and the only one this year.

3. Most frustrating: Dulko in Roland Garros 2010.

Off court:
1. Some people didn't like it but I loved her AO outfit this year.

2. I can't think of one by myself although allrounder's one is amazing so I'll add a vote for that. :worship:

Also, it's a bit of a sad one but I thought that in the midst of her injury this year, the Tandon article abt Vika supposedly avoiding the press was as good insight into what she was feeling at that time as any. Plus, I felt like Tandon at least treated her with respect there (unlike other journos at the time).

3. The NY Times one for the way she looked in it. But in terms of an interview, the Cross Court one with Matt Cronin was a pretty good video interview.

Twitter:
1. When she was trying to get from the US to Europe and she couldn't find a plane to take her anywhere. Then she had to rent a car and had someone drive her across Europe. :worship: Might have been the most entertained I've ever been on Twitter.

It might be hard to find accurate records for exhos. WTT should be easy enough. You might as well do those (maybe as a separate section) if you're going to do all the competetive matches. Good luck with this project!

I feel really dumb but what do you mean by cartography?

Anyway, the basic format so far is:

Opponent Name
Birthday (to see their age in comparison to Vika when they met)
Year of Meeting
Singles or Doubles
Vika's Dubs Partner (if it is doubles)
Place of Meeting
Court Type
Type of Event
Vika Win/Loss
Scoreline

Think of it as being all in one row.

1. I wanted to use Microsoft Access since it's much simpler unfortunately I don't have access installed on my computer so I'm using Excel.

2. The purpose for myself is so that when she comes up against someone in the future, I can see what all her results were against that person, whether there has been a trend, whether the court surface affects that, etc. :)

Again, I don't know if any of this is actually useful but I'm having a fun time with it so...

Speaking about Wikipedia and our fan projects there were these careless people taking care of Vika's profile and back then in Juin/July when I was searching for infos on Victoria I was really disappointed to see the state of her profile so I completely tookdown and remade each and every sections of it...

My most difficult moment though weirdly was talking about Vika's game I think I bugged for like a good 4-5 hours before I got some inspiration... so for french speakers or non french speakers with the help of google you could always make a round here (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_Azarenka) and say how inaccurate I am (my user name is : Hugotachini (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utilisateur:Hugotachini)). I've made a lot of contributions especially in the fashion section (models mainly) and volleyball but I'm too lazy to add them to my profile so it looks very empty.

You'll find her 2009/2010 calender, FED cup matches, H2Hs vs. top tens, her stats from 2009, YEC records but also the equipments she uses... it took me almost 2 months to make a high quality article and why not could be some help for you Bluestorm.

I've always started projects but never really end them this really was my first time ending one... the previous one I had was making films of Vika playing with her on-court attitudes, expressions... and with the help of Pinnacle studio... I've posted a long time ago I think 6 videos in the Vikaland video section but Eurosport and Youtube are ennemies so I kind of cooled down.

It seems at this point that Vika will be an alternate for the YEC. Too bad, I would rather she compete in Bali.

She still has chances to get in directly, but she'll probably have to win either Tokyo or Beijing. Not impossible but very tough. I really hope she has a week in Tokyo like she had one in Stanford. :inlove:

Vika still has her chances for the YEC I think but Pékin and Beijing will be determinant... a SF/F, F/F or SF/SF or a win in one or another would I think be very important but IMO an important part of it relays though on how her direct opponents performs in the Asian tourney.

Quick clarification: It has to be either YEC Alternate OR Bali right?

If so, what's better in general?

^^I didn't clearly understand your question but Vika alternate would be better than Bali... If Vika gets her ticket for Doha well she can not play Bali anymore even as an alternate.

Now I'm not even sure Vika if not in Doha can take a spot in Bali... first she hasn't yet won an International tournament and her participation could only be guaranteed by a wild card which is very highly improbable to my feelings...

It looks clear to me like YEC or nothing... Vika has her destiny in hand... if she plays good tennis and she's motivated which I'm quite sure she is then she's a potential winner of any of these Premier 5/Mandatory events... My hopes are still very high that Vika gets her ticket fair and square.

I just want her to have good fall season with solid, consistent results and let the cards fall where they may. If she gets into the YEC then awesome, if not then so be it.

Thanks for the answer!

I'd be surprised (and quite annoyed) if she doesn't qualify for YEC Alt + Bali direct entry and they don't offer her a wildcard to Bali. Who else worthy would they give the WC to?

Anyway, my question is more like: if she makes it to YEC as an alternate, she can't enter Bali as well right (whether WC or direct entry)? So she'd have to pick?

If so, is the alternate position more appealing?

Vikapower
Sep 23rd, 2010, 04:21 AM
^^Well when you've got Maria Sharapova on the starting blocks for Bali which is not completely sure though it kinds of tells you that Vika will have to try hard... the problem is still she didn't win an International event and that's the criteria that counts I don't really know how their WCs work but Vika's status might/can play a role...

I get your question uhm... well it seems to me that no Vika can't pick between being an alternate or going to Bali... if she's an alternate it seems to me that she only can pull out but in no ways I think she can pull off from YEC for Bali...

And let's be honest if there was choice to make though between alternate and Bali Vika willn't hesistate that long. An alternate gets $50.000 just for participation... and if she never gets to play a match a fair amount of WTA points plus additional prize money, unfortunately I don't have all the prizes :

Winner Match played Wins Losses Points Prize money ($)
Round robin 2 2 0 460 300 000
Round robin 2 1 1 300
Round robin 1 1 0 230 200 000
Round robin 2 0 2 140
Round robin 1 0 1 70

YEC alternates can play in Bali even if they end up playing at the YEC:

Break My Rapture
Sep 23rd, 2010, 04:45 PM
She's scheduled to play Osaka, which is right in between Beijing and Moscow.

Vika is currently #10 in the Race, if she has just solid results and particularly Na Li doesn't have spectacular results, she probably has a lock on at least one of the alternate spots. I hope she qualifies direct though, there are so much players in the top 8 atm she can defeat easily.

I actually think it's a pretty difficult draw. I'm still confident (or optimistic) about Vika's chances though. Just looking at her potential round-by-rounds, I truly believe she should get far.

It is a pretty tough draw when you compare her section to others with a few dangerous unseeded players all in her eigth, but it's not a terrible draw by any means. Vika's defending a QF here as well so that needs to be the minimum. I'm also another one who can't take Vika losing to Ivanovic....ever :sobbing:

Ugh, why does Vika always have to get the worst draws!? I just hope she's not super rusty after this extended post-concussion break.
