peers has no idea how to deal with the crosscourt slice to her backhand from molik. theres just too many loose shots from both, you have to think that the winner of this will be playing a top 100 player most likely in the oz open.

Molik doesn't know how to play at the net - I think she may be worse up there than Sharapova or her clones (Vaidisova and Azarenka) in terms of an orthadox volley. She looks in trouble now

molik has 2 weapons, her forehand and serve, getting her outwide or up at the net and shes like a fish out of water. even in her prime the backhand was always a huge weakness, she was just serving out of her mind for 6 months.

peers at least has started using the dropshot to counter moliks slice as molik is very slow.

Yeah her drop shots are excellent and would trouble some of the best movers on the wta tour let alone Molik who is constantly a foot behind the baseline - it's nice to see Molik play again but she really is so limited in what she can do on the court like you said.

i know what you mean, it is nice to see molik playing again but the limitations in her game are so plain to see. i forgot how shocking her movement is/was she is so flat footed sometimes. she looks like losing this frankly to someone who is just a good scrapper. i know shes had good results in her comeback but the 25k oz itf's are very very weak, i fear shes not really even a top 150 player anymore which will be hard for her to take and her fans.

Dani12
Dec 15th, 2009, 01:27 AM
This is better quality than a lot of top 100 matches i've seen in the past. At least there isn't a double fault every second point or an unforced error after 2 shots in the ralley.

hdfb
Dec 15th, 2009, 01:37 AM
As much as you can like Molik, the flaws in her game are really obvious. Her movement is akin to Davenport, but Davenport had amazing consistency with powerful serves and groundstrokes to consistently be in the top tier of women's tennis. Molik has a serve and forehand, but not as near as strong or consistent as Davenport, and Molik's backhand is just atrocious. As a former top 10 player, she should have really taken an entire summer in one of her off-seasons many years ago to change it.

I suppose she hasn't been back very long and to make more excuses the heat they are playing in is brutal so doesn't lead to great tennis. Hopefully with confidence she can improve and get into the top 100 but to go further than that it'll be tough alright.

:( You can't expect a player to come back from retirement in peak form. I saw Alicia on the news the other day and she needs to get a little bit fitter I think to be that 1 step quicker in recovery from her serve. It was when she had this she was lethal. I have to disagree with the backhand comment, her slice can be really effective as someone said it was today. ;) I don't really care if Alicia bombs this summer, as long as she improves and stays on tour. So nice to have her back!

Tennis isnt as easy as you seem to think... to say a player will easily be top 50 before they even break the top 300 is a little premature ;)

Anyway we can always hope the Aussie wildcards get easy draws in the AO R1 like Katie O'Brien or Anne Keothavong. :)

Trust me, not a single Brit would complain if Katie or Anne drew one of your WCs. Anne is a top 50 player - if thats ur idea of an easy draw ur really misguided. Anne would no doubt give Sally the sort of beatdown Kvitova gave her around the same time in 08, though since your tennis knowledge is far from up to scratch I might as well inform you that Anne isnt playing the AO, so keep hoping!

Please don't resort to name calling, that is just silly, if you want to discuss this don't be immature about it. It is my opinion that Sally and Olivia that will be in the top 50. I am allowed to think that.

some rather defensive oz supporters, lets face it apart from casey and molik most of these girls aren't going to be top 100 let alone top 50. peers couldn't take advantage of a molik out of sorts, she is carrying to much weight and was getting killed by moliks slice which isn't exactly world class.

some rather defensive oz supporters, lets face it apart from casey and molik most of these girls aren't going to be top 100 let alone top 50. peers couldn't take advantage of a molik out of sorts, she is carrying to much weight and was getting killed by moliks slice which isn't exactly world class.

Yes it is, you can't get into the top 10 with a glaring weakness like that. Molik's slice backhand is pretty good which makes up for when she comes over it quite badly and adds variety to her game and I wouldn't say Sally was getting killed by it. But hey, that is your opinion.

 Olivia for sure can be very good, but Peers is just all kinds of awful. As for the rest, I'd say Monika has the best chabce at doing something worthwhile. But we will see.

What a ridiculous comment, obviously your idea of awful is any player outside the top 250. Tennis is a tough sport to have any kind of success in, many reasonably talented players will do less in there whole careers than sally has already acheived in hers. I know that i am ranting a bit now but for someone who is sitting behind a computer to call someone who is getting out there and trying to make a career out of something that they enjoy doing 'all kinds of awful' is very ignorant.

some rather defensive oz supporters,

Trust me, not a single Brit would complain if Katie or Anne drew one of your WCs. Anne is a top 50 player - if thats ur idea of an easy draw ur really misguided. Anne would no doubt give Sally the sort of beatdown Kvitova gave her around the same time in 08, though since your tennis knowledge is far from up to scratch I might as well inform you that Anne isnt playing the AO, so keep hoping!

And some rather defensive British supporters. ;)

Look, I think that people from all countries elevate their own juniors, but especially Australians, Americans and Brits. We've gone from being the powerhouses, to either scrambling to find who will be the next generation to represent our country (America and Australia), or desperately looking for players from the current crop to step up (Great Britain).

It's hard to not feel protective of your juniors when you feel people are giving them a hard time, especially if you actually support that player. I think you can get your point across without being rude and blunt, or presenting your own opinions as fact. If we start throwing nasty words around, it just gets ugly, and we're discussing junior tennis players for crying out loud, there's absolutely no need for a subject like that to get ugly.

I think you will find it was an Australian who lowered the tone by dragging British tennis and the quality of its best females into a conversation about the AO WC play - clearly that sort of insult would provoke a reaction from a British fan. Calling somebodys view on the development of a player delusional isnt exactly what I would call throwing nasty words around tho. I dont agree that we British are elevating our own juniors as Heather and Laura both won junior slams with CH rankings of 3 and 1 respectively which is impressive enough to speak for itself tbh.

Please don't resort to name calling, that is just silly, if you want to discuss this don't be immature about it. It is my opinion that Sally and Olivia that will be in the top 50. I am allowed to think that.

If all you want to do is argue, then I'm not even going to bother :)

What are you basing Sallys progress on exactly? Seems crazy to say someone who has beaten only a couple top 200 players all year, only climbed a fairly small amount and relies on weak ITF events in Australia is going to easily be top 50??

You havent posted anything worthy of discussion - Ive already explained that brits dont need to elevate their juniors because they have proved themselves that they are very capable and talented. By elevate their own juniors, I mean that they hype them up more than people from other countries do. And you can't deny that Brits aren't already talking about Robson as a future top player. And why would you want to, it's not even a bad thing that we hype our own players.

USA/Australia: Good current players, average group of juniors
Britain: Average current players, good couple of juniors

So while GBR do have a couple of players who look to have bright futures (Robson and Watson), I still think that Britains hype them more than others do.

You ended up looking stupid by implying that my reacion was over-defensive simply for stating the obvious and replying with a totally reasonable comment.

Are you talking about your response to GeeTee? If so, then GeeTee insulted British players, to which you responded with insults to Australian players.

Rather defensive (I didn't say you were overly defensive)? Yes, both of the posts were defensive, trying to insult players from each other's country to make players from your own country look good is defending the players from your own country, thus the 'rather defensive' comments both sammy and I made.

You're right, its not an insult - I love Molik, Stosur and Dokic and have a lot of respect for their talents and games, so wouldnt make such broad put-downs regarding the state of Australia's game. To read an insult aimed at Britains best women, however, particularly annoyed me as they have worked very hard and steadily improved to reach their current level, with no role-model or succesful player to help take the pressure off them. There was no need to say it and I think I made my feelings clear.

Both of them have more winners than errors at the moment. You're totally right about the backhand though. There's no way she's going to do more than getting just inside the top 100 unless she does something about that. Now. She's capable of coming over it, so I don't know why she keeps on slicing.

Well not really, considering i'm a big follower of the challenger and satellite circuits and when I posted that post like 95% of my sig was players from outside of the top 250 so :lol:.

I know too well that tennis is a tough sport, I used to training to become a professional and training around the UK and the world before I got injured so I do know about how tough it is, and believe you me I would love more than most things to not be behind this computer screen but it is what it is and i'm saying what I see. I didn't mean that she is just terrible and should quit, but compared to the delusional expectations that so many of you australian supporters put on her as well as so many other aussies, she is indeed all kinds of awful.

I agree. However I think it is possible that she'll lift her game when facing some tougher opponents. From all the matches I've seen of her in this comeback she's really just been pushing and rallying, she hasn't flatened out any of her shots so far.

But if she doesn't start working with a good coach to sort out the issues in her game, she's going to do exactly what she did when she came back last time, maybe get back to around top 50 and then flop it like it's hot out of the top 200.

I usually go to www.fromsport.com to watch matches, but there's no link for Serena/Stosur. Does anyone know of one?!

Thanks, but that was the link I was using. Each link says Verdasco vs. Davydenko. I clicked on all 4 of them, but nothing comes up.
