Wonder what country will win if this passes

mmmm...Russia USA or India?

the IOC said it wanted guarantees that top players in singles would be able to participate in mixed doubles

I hope for Venus or Roger will play

so top players may be forced to chose between doubles and mixed?
i mean they won't play 3 events in a week right?

Dec 8th, 2009, 07:17 PM
Well they would obviously want Roger, Nadal, Murray, Williams, Bryans, etc to play. That would be some great teams

Federer/Bascinzky (Schnyder)
Nadal/Martinez Sanchez
Murray/Robson
Bryan/Williams
Bryan/Williams

Could be interesting.

I'm sure they could break up the tennis event into 1 1/2 week. And not EVERY country has their top singles players in the doubles, so some might only play doubles and mixed.

I honestly think they'd get some nice representation from the top players too. It's the Olympics, ask most players if they'd like another shot to take an Olympic gold medal for their country, and you'd get a response I'm sure.

Sure you might get some who want to focus exclusively on singles, but more matchplay could also be an attractive prospect for some.

I don't like the idea.
If they do that, I feel that the ITF has to ensure that there are enough mixed doubles tournis for a team to get prepared.
Which means there should be at the minimum a mixed doubles tourni at every joint tournament, starting in 2011.

In most cases, the country will pick the highest doubles player of each gender to go to the Olympics like they did in 2008 but I still feel that these players should have enough time to get prepared for such an important tourni.
4 tournaments a year at the slams IMO is not enough.

This has been confirmed in the past few minutes:

ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti said: "The ITF is very happy and grateful that the IOC Executive Board has decided to add mixed doubles to the programme for the Olympic Tennis Event for London 2012 and beyond. We believe that this addition will make Olympic Tennis a truly unique event, with top players having the opportunity to compete for their countries and the honour of an Olympic Medal in three distinct disciplines: singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The ITF thanks the IOC Executive Board for their continuing support of tennis in the Olympic Games."

I think the fact the 2012 Olympic tennis event is at Wimbledon will give it an even more important role in the Games overall and therefore players would take the opportunity to win a Gold Medal on Wimbledon's Centre Court (a once in a lifetime chance!) very very seriously. If you watch Mixed Doubles finals nowadays at Wimbledon I think it is obvious all the players want the title and take it seriously and so I think they would take the Olympics at Wimbledon as very important. I was in Centre Court this year for the Mixed final and it was very serious stuff!
I can't wait for this event!

Max Mirny + Vika Azarenka (real contender - slam winners in mixed)
Niklas Kiefer + Sabine Lisicki (check out their hopman cup video!)
Tom Birdich + Lucie Safarova (cute together)
James Blake + Liezel Huber (just kidding!)
John Isner + Lindsay Davenport (the tallest team ever)
Mahesh Bhupathi + Sania Mirza (token "Asian" representative)
Gael Monfil + Alize Cornet
Nikolai Davidenko + Alisa Klybanova
Mikhail Yuzhny + Vera Zvonareva
Roger Federer + Timea Baczynski (will be awkward)
David Nalbandian + Gisela Dulko
Fernando Verdasco + AMG
Rafa Nadal + MJM
Andy Murray + Anne Koethavon (even more awkward but the Brits have no choice)
Llyton Hewitt + Jelena Dokic (sentimental fevorite)
Novak Jokovic + Bojana Jovanovski (Ana and JJ washed up by then. Bojana will be Serbian No. 1)

I actually agree.
I don't watch too much cycling but I feel that it's wrong with so many competitors who specialize in individual cycling compared to mixed doubles.
At the same time, this is could bring a little more legitimacy to mixed doubles.

I still believe the ITF should by 2011, have a mixed doubles tournament for every joint ATP/WTA tourni.
It only makes sense now.
Also if Bali is still on the schedule in 2011, it would be nice to see them have a YEC for mixed doubles competitors.
Because honestly it would be ashame if 4 tournis before London would be the preparation (the three slams and Hopman Cup).

I wouldn't be surprised for a few players to come out of retirement for the chance at a medal though.

It's Mary Joe Fernandez's call likely (I doubt they will fire her before 2012) and I don't think she will give Huber the chance to play mixed doubles.
Venus and Serena are better mixed doubles player and if they get the mixed doubles slam by 2012 (which I think at least Venus will try for), then Huber doesn't have a shot, especially with Venus being such a dominant player on grass.

What are you basing this on? 2010 will be 12 years since either of them won a mixed slam, while Liezel is the reigning French Open champion (significantly in this case, with Bob Bryan). I think the only thing is if Liezel is still playing then.

Bahia
Dec 15th, 2009, 07:25 PM
Venus and Serena are better than Liezel Huber in mixed doubles without question.

Venus and Serena should NOT play with Blake and Roddick. Roddick cannot volley at all, and the last time Serena played with James Blake she was the better player on her side of the court.

Venus has shown previous chemistry with Bob Bryan and Serena/Mike would be a very good combination as well with both being such excellent returners.

Venuseswilliams Just checked it out, there is mixed in 2012, i am so excited!! I am going to have to be in the shape of my life to play 3 events in 10 days!

Vee is excited for mixed doubles!!

She also tweeted the Bryan Brothers asking them if there is really mixed doubles. They (not sure which brother, probably Mike) then pretty much asked her to be their partner. Seems like she wants to play with one of them
She wants to play all 3:lol: I hope she focuses more so on Singles and Mixed because by winning singles, obviously it'd be her second, but if she wins the mixed then she would be only player to have won golds in singles, mixed and doubles:inlove:
I hope it was Bob though:lol:
Imagine: Venus and Bob team up win Wimbledon Mixed, then get the Gold at the Olympics and then finish the year with a great run to the title at USO:hearts:
Because Blake and Roddick have so many more doubles titles than the Bryans?

Anyway, that's assuming both WS or both Bryans will be able to enter. If Liezel Huber is still around at the top of the game by then (very possible), or anyone else, they might not both be able to play.

 I don't know what makes you think Liezel would get in over any of those players. Venus and Serena will always get priority over Liezel. Look at the 2000 Olympics Doubles for proof. However the WS not playing Fed Cup much (though it's only been a year) may tempt MJF to put in the loyal Liezel.

Are you serious????

It's for an Olympic Gold Medal:o

:cuckoo: To those who oppose this wonderful idea.

Other sports have multiple events that players and Nations can rack up Gold medals in. Tennis definitely needs another event:rolleyes:

Except you don't add events just for the sake of adding them  What kind of logic is that? Would you also be in favor of adding a mixed team event, a la Hopman Cup at the Olympics? While you're at it, why not also add a women's team event ( a la Fed Cup) and a men's team event (a la Davis Cup)? This way, a total of 8 gold medals would be awarded in tennis at the Olympics| Oh yay! :hearts: The more the better right?

There has to be a certain tradition and continuity to it. Mixed doubles in tennis is only a marginalized event played 4 times a year, so unless the ITF, WTA and ATP tour change that and begin treating it as an integral part of the sport, I don't think it deserves a spot in the Olympics. :)

What other sports with multiple events are you thinking of anyway? Track? Swimming? All these sports are divided into events where people specialize in, so all the events are an integral part of the sport.
